love those wrangler pants. i have two pairs. i always appreciate this channel because you're a serious backpacker/hiker but your gear is (by my standards) super reasonable and budget friendly. it just makes you more relatable!
I love them too! Super comfortable, stretchy, and pretty tough. I started wearing the Wrangler Outdoor Series pants as soon as they started showing up at Wal-Mart several years ago. I've gotten 5 or 6 pairs in different styles and colors. I actually went through a motorcycle wreck in the exact ones you are wearing and though they are pretty tough, they didn't like that too much! I had to retire that pair! I even have one of those Athletic shirts too, in black. Except I melted a couple of small holes in it while welding one day so now it's one of my work in the yard shirts. 😂😂😂
Great video. Day hiking stuff is divided between stuff you’ll absolutely use and stuff for worst case scenarios. You covered all the contingencies to ensure a fun and safe hike.
I always bring a 5' x 8' silnylon tarp like the RAB Siltarp1. Only weighs 8 oz and can be deployed quickly to keep you dry or out of the sun or for use as an emergency overnight shelter.
Hey brother, am 40 and i just started backpacking / hiking again and let me tell you, your channel as been literally my go to channel for me to get gear and ideas. You have an amazing channel with amazing content and information, and you are super relatable. Keep up the amazing work brother and God bless
Just starting here. I've only been on 2 short hikes so far. At 57, I don't want to go too fast. You and Dixie ( wanderlust) are my go-to influencers to help me get going. Thanks so much!
Hello 👋 Chris, thank you for sharing this gear review. You shared some vital information. You're ready for the 'Storm of the Century'. Please keep up your informative videos. All the best to you, my friend. Stay safe out there. 🤗
Great product list Chris, really good options there, I’m not a tuna fan but I have taken the same thing before but it’s the pink salmon packets. Enjoyed watching the video, thanks
Thank you for the great ideas. I live in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, so not sure how many of these nifty items I’ll find locally. May have to purchase them online.
Bear spray should be accessible instantly so on the top of the bag where you can grab it with one hand or attached to one of the pack strap. And always carry two of them in Bear County.
Guten Morgan Chris ! Just watched the video , ( I know only a year late 😊) but thank you , loved the ideas! Just curious, since it’s been a year , would you change /add any thing to the pack ? Have a good day ! 💛🚶
I get what you were doing and like your videos and your gear, etc. But I was very unprepared for the bag of mayo lol. One thing is I don't think they recommend using a snakebite kit suction on snake bites anymore. Worth looking into.
Yeah...seems like a good thing to have when away from help...but not sure of the effectiveness either. Hope to never found out....at least in the wild.
Please do research these kits. As someone in the medical field, these are based on myths. Please stay safe. Watch other first aid videos on snake bite first aid. Best thing to do is avoid getting bitten, but if you do , try to identify the snake, and get help immediately.
Good to see all you carry for a day hike. In lieu of hand sanitizer, since I don't like to use most of them (unless they're natural), I use soap leaves. It's a really good option for those who want to save ounces. Also, have you tried a portable bidet? I haven't, but have heard they're really good in lieu of bringing TP, or in addition to TP. Hikers and especially thru hikers have started using them. I need a bite & sting kit like you have!!
Where did you get the bite and sting kit? Good to have a chone too sunce i liv vin the desert and have been stung by a sxorpion twice nit the same one though within two years. Second one got me under my cuticle on my finger that hurt and throbbed fir hours i took a baby aspire on it muxed with water after i put it on it it helped but had to aleo take alleve. It stull hirt a little bit that kit would have heloed even more cam i find on at walmart?
Most of the gear is good, but that first aid kit can be reduced a lot to help reduce the weight. Use the Sawyer and get rid of the lifestraw. the Sawyer is so much easier to use than bending down to suck up water from a stream. You don't need both! I like your videos, but there's a little overkill. But hey, maybe carrying extra weight will give folks a little but of a workout. ;)
While this vid is great for newcomers (Thanks Chris) I would reduce about half of what you have there. I climbed in the Cascades for 40+ years. Day trips require special packing same as multi days do.
I know mom sent the snake extractor but I wouldn’t waste time using that. Those kits have been proven not to work at all. Better to get yourself back to the car or use the SOS. About fire starting the dryer lent works great it works even more great if you dip it in a little petroleum jelly. I usually keep a few clumps in a zip lock in the same pocket as my Mylar emergency blanket and my fire steel. The petroleum jelly lights immediately and doesn’t blow out.
So Chris!! I have another pack that I got in addition to all the packs and the newest addition to the packs is named Colby. So now I have from smallest to largest in order. Haley, she is the hydration water backpack then I have Colby who is the newest pack, then I have Jessica, Serena, Jasmine Brooklyn, and Bailey, then the 2 largest backpacking packs. Mya and Mariah. Mariah is the largest one. Then going away from the packs getting to my briefcases they are Marina, she is my carrying shoulder brief case. And then I have my commuter brief case and she is a rolling one. Her name is Maddy like the girl Maddy. Bailey has been taking a vacation ever sense the pandemic. Now that I have been getting back to work Maddy has been taking over. She hauls my files and coffee mug that is 32 ounces along with a stainless steal water bottle. She even has a hook up for my phone charger. Colby though she is a smaller pack she does have a port to charge my phone. Out of the packs the girls who can charge my phone are Colby Serena, and Brooklyn.
There was a gal hiking in the mountains whos hiking boot soles had become slick from being wore out and fell off the cliff to her demise, very sad, so keep that inmind all.🙋♀️🙅♀️🙆♀️
You can get them from the US forest service as well they have topo maps or if you are in an area that is BLM land then you can buy them from BLM as well.
I don't want to say anything bad about the gear used in the video but, you do not need all this just to day hike people. this is literally more than you need for a doomsday.
I believe I said 3 times in the video...you do not need all this gear at any one time...and may not need some of it ever....the are suggestions/ ideas as to what I use from time to time.
Aside from making videos, have you ever actually used a Lifestraw in the field? The number of people who say they are a good idea vs the zero times I've ever seen one get used doesnt seem to line up.
Yes William I actually have...and NO I don't just make videos. I do actually spend time in the wilderness. On Amazon it gets Best Seller rating of 4.8 stars out of 65 Thousand reviews. Must work for somebody. I suggested it because it could help some people.
@@basecampchris oh I wasnt saying you dont get out. Just I've never seen anyone actually use one in the backcountry. A filter where you can filter water to take with you makes way more sense that bending over a water source to take a drink. But I guess it might have an "animals gathered at the watering hole" appeal :)
If you're not worried about weight, it's better to have than have not. I wouldn't bank on the kit working but it can't hurt anything using it to await assistance or buy some time and its also for stings.
@@robinthurston3382 why carry something that is proven worthless????? Boy Scouts 101 Snake bite kits don't work. Much better to learn proper first aid.
