A camping review of a bug bivy/inner tent I purchased on Ebay for around 26 dollars. This works great as a stand alone or inner tent bug solution with a floor.

the cub checking out that cactus is priceless!! I backpack to flyfish in the Sierra Nevada backcountry and I love to cowboy camp but the mosquitoes, black flys, ants, etc... are brutal. I had a bivy like that but I didn't like the mesh so close to face. I built my own a frame style that I clip in to a ridgeline. I had some silnylon from an old tent outer I found and a cheap bug net I that paid $15 for. 34" wide at the head 32" wide at the foot 40" tall that tapers down to 34" at the foot. I can sit up inside it and cook outside under the tarp when it rains. with my 10x10 silnylon tarp, 10 aluminum and titanium stakes and my ridge line I'm at 1.9 pounds.

Hi Kevin, great to see you in another overnight camp out again. That bug bivy looks really nice. Hopefully the quality is good for such a great price. I was considering the DD Tarp tent and inner screen tent, but you're looking at almost $300! looking for lightweight solutions. With your poncho and inner tent, looks like a great solution without breaking the bank! thanks again for another great video and the info.

I think it was about this time last year, when it was very hot, that I was camping using my solo tent. It was nice that the upper part of the tent was mesh. I was able to stay cooler at night, and away from the bugs. Plus, no condensation. That looks like a great setup for hot night camping. The one thumbs down, is home from their vacation in Cape Cod......😬😁

I recently purchased 2 of the One Tigris A frame mesh tents. Very light weight. Uses treking poles or tie-out to trees. Pair it up with the OD UST Tube Tarp. Makes a nice lightweight system.

Hey Walker. For future hiking trips I've made a decision to go ultra light. I'm at the point where all my gear, with the exception of my pack, is ultra light gear. My goal is to get my total weight, including food and pack, down to less than 20 pounds. I think I can do it. Heavier weight will only be for winter camping. I'm just too old to be lugging 30 pounds of gear plus water. I can't get any significant distance with that much weight. I'm 62. I could do it in my younger days but not any more. Consider the following: Dream Hammock + ZPacks Top Quilt and Under quilt + Zpack Carbon Fiber 11 foot tarp + Kelty Falcon 4000 pack = 11.825 pounds Dream Hammock + Zpacks Top Quilt and Under Quilt + carbon fiber 11 foot tarp + Kelty Redcloud 110 pack = 9.95 pounds Dream Hammock + Zpacks Top Quilt and Under Quilt + Carbon fiber 11 foot tarp + Arc Haul 62 Liter carbon fiber pack = 6.36 pounds It's not a hard choice

It's a tricky balance. I have been cold in August. All it takes is a hot day then a storm and old front plus no insulation.

Thanks for the review & demonstration...looks worth every bit of the $26 you paid! On another note, I believe you earlier alluded to a few health issues you’ve experienced. As many of us, including myself, have issues with high blood pressure, diabetes, joints that hurt, etc, etc, could you share what you feel comfortable with telling us some of your health concerns and more importantly what you have done (and are doing) to improve those things? I would find it helpful as well as encouraging.
@grannieannie1371
@grannieannie1371 5 лет назад
Yeah you can count me in for the joint pain and blood sugar. There's no way I could sleep on the pad, I couldn't walk the next morning.

@MegaWoodswalker

I lowered my blood sugar by not drinking any juice, soda or anything with sugar in it. I don't add sugar to anything. I generally avoid chips etc etc. I do need to drop some weight as gain some back mostly from eating past 8 which I just eliminated last week so will see what happens. I hike or walk at least 5 miles a day 5 or 6 days a week. That helps lower blood sugar (have actually measured it on a meter). Thanks for watching!

The multi mat isn't ideal. I normally sleep on a down mat or hammock. I lucked out with the soft ground.
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
It was picked as use to sit on when filming and it can fit inside my pack. I rarely use it to sleep on. This was an exception. The Exped Downmat is the way to go for sleeping on the ground IMO.

Nice review - thanks for the info. How much room is there in there with someone your height? How much extra gear could you get inside? Looked like a nice trip. Too bad you didn't score any fish. One of the joys of winter camping; no bugs! Voles maybe, but no bugs. I've been places where the bugs were so bad that after getting in the bug bivy, I spent the next ten minutes killing the bugs that followed me in! Happens with my hammock too.
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
Tons of room but not really enough to toss in additional gear like a pack. Part of the intent was for use inside a tipi as 1/2 bug nest. I am working on a cheap UL heated camping/bugout shelter and my hope is to make this part of it. Mostly imported cheaper (price but quality is better than expect) components. Sewing up a removable stove jack this week and will into the shelter on the channel soon then test it our during a few trips (just don't tell Patrick).

That's a crazy low price. Kind of makes me sad that I bought a Luxe Outdoors Hex-V8, but I got it because it fits real nice in my Sierra Designs Mountain Guide shelter, for cooler weather use, or I can just take a lightweight tarp for rain protection in warmer conditions.

This is totally sealed and even has a bath tub floor. That said for the most part only ever encountered potentially dangerous snakes like Timber Rattlers and Water Moccasins when on the move. Never had one enter camp and approach a shelter though I guess anything is possible. Thanks for watching!

You just put your shoes out where they can get filled with bugs. Place them in a shopping plastic bag. Two years or more in deep jungle you take care of all your kit, Png, Borneo, Honduras, French Guyana and Sumatra. Bon chance.

@@MegaWoodswalker I lived in the desert SW for 33 years. I can't tell you how many times I saw tourists reach out and touch cacti. Some of the cacti have very fine needles and look as though they would be soft to the touch. For some reason, folks who don't know better are irresistibly tempted to touch them. Obviously, that bear cub was not familiar with cacti either! I had to laugh at his reaction.
