Great job HC, I've got one little tip for the good people out here, buy some food grade silicone grease ( $1 for a 1/2 oz container at my local hardware store) and coat the rubber gaskets on the filter and spout, a little goes a long way. This prevents leaks and helps the gaskets to remain supple and reusable.🙂

I know the berkey filters say to put food coloring in the top tank when you first install new filters to make sure it isn't leaking. The water at the bottom should be clear. A great way to make sure you don't have any contaminated water leaking into the bottom chamber.

I found this tip in the comments of another similar bucket filtration system and thought it might be useful to anyone who is having a slow rate of filtration: "I would like to bring an engineering problem to your attention that will fix flow rate and also the filtration rate. The bottom container when starting has only air in it. As it fills with water, the air is pushed upwards and has only one area to escape from, and that is back through the two water filters. The filters are not able to displace the air in proportion to the water flow out of them, and this causes the filters to slow down, and eventually stop. What needs to be done is another hole needs to be put in the system, and a food-grade safe ventilation tube needs to be installed. It would need to have a threaded system similar to the filters, and a clear tube that would reach about 1 1/2" short of the top of the water chamber when filled. This will allow air to vent from the bottom chamber receiving water to the top chamber losing water, which would regulate it. Your filtration rate would increase to its maximum capacity, and the dispensing rate would be equalized by the infusion of air from the top, preventing vapor lock." Again, if anyone has this type of problem, hopefully, this modification will help....
@destination...diamond3892
@destination...diamond3892 3 года назад
Where does one obtain a "food grade safe ventilation tube"?
@janp7660
@janp7660 2 года назад
Couldn't one just drill a small hole near the top of the bottom vessel to prevent air lock? As long as the filtered water level doesn't reach the hole, it shouldn't leak. ( Or at least that's what my small brain seems to think!)
@iamwhatiam4075
@iamwhatiam4075 2 года назад
More filters works too. Saw abig family do it with 4 so it could keep up better. Icr the channel or the rate, but he said they have been using this "system" for years , for off grid living, and so far that was the best way they found. ? Just an added note. :) tyfs
@sewlady003
@sewlady003 8 месяцев назад
my Berkey has a small 'clip" that goes on the rim of the bottom chamber. I am thinking that a couple bobby pins clipped over the edge would be worth a try to prevent airlock. or some similar 'clip'. it doesnt need to create a very big space for the air to escape.

One thing to keep in mind is what your water source will be. All of the ceramic filters I've researched state that they are not for use with "microbially unsafe water". So they are intended for water that is already "safe" but just wanting to filter out sediment or hard water minerals. In a SHTF situation, if the water you're starting with is at all questionable, you'll want to take additional steps to kill microbes (boiling/bleach, etc) before running it through the ceramic filter. But if you're using bleach to make the water safe first, then the ceramic filter would work well to remove the bleach taste. If you have any concerns about chemical contamination, then a different type of filter would be a better choice, but you can still go with the DIY setup to lower costs. I love the 2 stainless pots idea since they look nicer than the buckets, plus, 2 of the 5gal buckets would be quite tall stacked on a countertop. The 2 pots are a much more manageable size!

That is brilliant! I've been using a Brita pitcher for decades, but I've wanted a Berkey for years, I just can't afford it. Now I can make one!! Thank you for sharing, so much nicer looking than five gallon buckets. And with the extra parts you can always make an extra one from the buckets.

How clever! I have been thinking about a Berkey or another major brand but they cost so very much money. I have a Brita but that really only makes water taste better rather than filtering out the bad stuff. The better the filter the better your water will be. Nice to know how to do this now!! Thanks

I bought 2 Berkey black filters and used 2 plastic buckets with lids. Put the filters through the bottom of the topbucket and the lid of the bottom bucket and a rvs faucet about 5 cm from the bottom. The bucket contains about 3 gallons of water. Although we have very tasty water in Amsterdam, Holland, because the water gets a final cleansing through the sanddunes at the coast, the purificarion of the water of the Rhein is becoming more difficult because of factory deposits and hormones etc, and with the Berkey filters I am making sure that my body will not have to cope with these poisons. The filters cost me about US $ 140, the buckets nothing and the tap $10.

Brilliant idea shared here, I LOVE IT!! THANK you for sharing. For pre-filtering "pond" water or rain water - make a filter with sand and/or rock with 2 larger containers such as 5 gal buckets or larger. OR a Large capacity fish tank like 50 gals or so OR a large heavy duty storage tote something you Could hook up a hose or spigot to in the same manner shown in this tutorial. Also, i wonder if dropping a water proof UV light into one of the buckets is a good idea - they are for fish tanks so should work (abt $14 at Wally world). Here's another tip I have used for cleaning the filters: soak in a Citric acid solution for a few minutes (until it returns to white or nearly white) it will depend on how concentrated the solution is. Caution here, over doing it can dissolve the adhesives that hold the filter together so less is "more". Also, cleaning it with food grade hydrogen peroxide will renew it for a longer life. My thought is to do a flush with hydrogen peroxide weekly/bi-weekly or monthly - depending on how much it s used. Just be sure to run a flush through before drinking. I have a portable/reusable reverse osmosis filter (katydyn brand) which is ceramic. I soak it in citric acid solution - it has returned to white better than any other method. I use it because it is much less expensive than the food grade hydrogen peroxide.

Awesome idea! My problem is I can decide on a filter. I was all set to buy a berkey but then I found info online about them that made me second guess them. Especially for the price. Zero water seems amazing until you see all the reviews claiming the water turns sour quickly and making them expensive to keep replacing. I'm so frustrated.

Great! I made something similar with 2 food grade 5 gallon buckets from Home Depot (HDPE #2). But I really don't like the idea of my water being exposed to plastics even though it is food grade. So, I was wondering about drilling through stainless steel today and I found you!!! Wooo hooo! It's much easier than I expected. Your tip about getting lighter weight stainless steel makes lot of sense. Thanks so much for this great how-to video! I think it looks just as good as a Berkey! And with a big family there's no reason not to have more than one of these! Ask your kids to be creative and figure out where to put it. It doesn't have to be in the kitchen. 🎉😊

I would recommend using filters that can remove viruses and bacteria. When I checked on these filters they said they barely remove bacteria, and said nothing about viruses. If boiling water prior to using the filter, boil for 20 minutes. Boiling removes most pathogens, or viruses and bacteria. Boiling does not remove chemicals, dirt, metals, or minerals that may be in the water.
@lisafisher8081
@lisafisher8081 2 года назад
Like she said if you're worried about the water boil it first. Then there's no problem with bacteria
@focusfrost9856
@focusfrost9856 2 года назад
Boil before or after filtering, or use chlorine to kill bacteria & viruses. Virtually none of the filters can remove viruses, and only a few very expensive ones can remove some, but not all, bacteria. You want them 100% dead. Look at the micron size particles the filter can trap. Most can go to 0.2 or 0.4. Viruses are 0.002, too tiny to get captured. You must sanitize as well as filter water to be safe. Filtering alone is never adequate.
@armourofgod6310
@armourofgod6310 6 месяцев назад
For viruses and bacteria all you have to do is add a couple of PURE silver coins in the collected water part of the pot and you will have no problems.

Berkey uses silver impregnated filter that kill viruses and pathogens. That is why they are more expensive but worth it. It is called a water purifier, not just a filter. You could always use the cheap filters and then boil the water for ten minutes. My filters last mee three or more years with bimonthly cleaning with scotch Brite pad and running Water. You can make you own containers like she did....

Use this filter to work on the taste. Make a couple of 5 gallon buckets into a prefilter system. A colander lined with old t-shirts, etc. to prefilter water.Then you could use tablets or unscented chlorine like chlorax to shock treat. Allow @ least an hour for chlorine to desapate into the air. I invested in Zero 2 filter. It is suppose to remove a great many things. It can be backflushed to clean. It is my prefilter. One could use another type water filter as prescreener before putting into your Berkley like filter. There are videos building up layers of rock, charcoal, & sand as prefilters.Some people make them in 55 gallon drum set up. I intend to use my Berkley like set up as the final step before drinking. This way I can preserve my brought filters & extend their life. As with any chemical, educate yourself on self handling of chlorine in its many forms. God bless. Another thing, you can run water from tap into pitcher. Allow chlorine to desapate, then put in your filter set up. This could also extend the filters life.
@VWilt-so3ws
@VWilt-so3ws 3 года назад
I'm not quite understanding what you mean? You made a 2 bucket system, put together like this video maker? Where does the colander come in. If your buckets filtered, why use chlorine tabs in pre-screen If from pond, lake stream etc., yes I understand using the tablets. I think I'm missing something. Thank you Vic
@kalvinnoble488
@kalvinnoble488 3 года назад
@@VWilt-so3ws There are three (3) different types of contaminants one has to address when it comes to filtering water for healthy consumption. First thing to consider is floating or suspended particulate matter, like plant matter, bugs, dirt and the like. This is what the pre-filter takes care of. It strains out this type of material. The second thing to consider is biological contaminants, like protozoa, viruses bacteria and the like. The third and last thing to consider is chemical contaminants, like poisons, fertilizers and other harmful chemicals in the water. A different filter may be needed for the second and third stage of filtering. Or, just one filter that does both functions for the second and third stage of filtering.
