SODOLA reached out to me to take a look at a couple of their 2.5/10G network switches. These switches are budget friendly and great if you are looking for affordable switches with faster than 1G network interfaces for your home network/homelab.
The 5 port 2.5G switch is a basic unmanaged switch while the 6 port 2.5/10G switch is a web managed switch, which means it means it supports more advanced features such as VLANs, STP, IGMP snooping, etc.
Disclaimer: SODOLA sponsored the switches but opinions are my own.

I'd been looking to see what the differences are between the models distributed by Sodola versus the OEM ones which are by Xike (Referred to as XikeStor or SeekSwan), so thanks for that (Differences appear to be purely cosmetic and hardcoding the language to English for Sodola) 👍 Both variants have firmware updates to version 1.9 which add support for LACP which is a nice addition.

Ohh, thanks for that info. I will check out the firmware update to see what it adds. Nice that they added that feature because it makes those budget friendly switches more feature rich for the great price.

Hi! Thanks for your Videos! I have one question - what is the name of you PDU Software using in this Video? TY!

It is the EnGenius ECP16 PDU. I did a video about it recently: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9hry38FobFw.html

kind of few years ago I started with my first switch: simple 1Gbps from Amazon. then I needed 1 more - both were 5 ports my next one was: 8 ports managed switch - still 1Gbps then next was 9 ports managed switch with 1 port being 10Gbps/fiber and 8 being 2.5Gbps curerently I bought one more so now I have 18 ports 2.5Gbps and 2 ports 10Gbps interconnecting them (2 switches) I am now left with ... 1 empty port what is next? ideally it would be 24 ports all 10Gbps... but this is huge cost ;-) I upgraded (almost) all my servers to be 2.5Gbps - some being multiple 2.5Gbps anyway, just a story all these switches (including yours from video) have exactly the same software ;-)

Haha yeah. There is a 12 port 10G Grandstream switch I’ve considered purchasing as an aggregation switch that’s not super expensive ($279): www.ipphone-warehouse.com/grandstream-gwn7832-layer-3-aggregation-managed-network-switch/ UniFi has an 8 port 10G switch for $269 (out of stock of course).

there is a firmware update available which allows LACP

Thanks! Someone else mentioned that. I should’ve checked before making the video but I thought that would be a fairly standard managed switch feature even in a budget friendly switch.

I updated today and see the option now! I wasn’t that far out of date (v1.7 instead of 1.9) considering the firmware date was near the end of last year and the v1.9 update was January of this year.

I keep wondering why the Switch is so damn cheap...do you have to worry about data protection?

Unmanaged switches there should be little concern because there’s no management web interface. Managed switches could potentially reach out to the Internet (for time synchronization, firmware updates, etc) so in theory it could do something more nefarious. If you have a firewall it should be easier to detect and/or block connections coming from the switch if there is any and if you are paranoid about it phoning home. They are cheap because they are typically Chinese brands that are not resold under other brands with a markup (my guess). Just like how you can get cheaper mini PCs from Aliexpress than from resellers on Amazon or brand name companies. The hardware is often sourced from similar companies but the features may be packaged differently and marked up by companies/resellers to make more of a profit.

@@homenetworkguy Thank you for the explanation, I think I'll buy a switch and take a closer look at it, I use a Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra, the device is very comfortable. I think sometimes you think about it so much.😊

Yeah it’s nice to have a unified (no pun intended) web interface to manage everything with the UniFi products, but there are other good brand name and generic name products that work well enough in a home environment for a better price than UniFi. I only have UniFi APs, but I have other brands like Grandstream for my main switches.

Unfortunately, I haven't experimented with implementing a split tunnel configuration for VPNs.. I wish I could help but one day I may work on some VPN content such as that.
