I'm really happy to try out these new router templates from Musiclily! They seem like great quality, and so far have worked really well for me. Hey Dan: I have little experience with a router -- but yesterday I needed to make some mods to permit an HSS Strat pickguard to work in a SSS Strat body. Sadly I made many of the mistakes you mentions -- so I thought: "Haven't I seen Dan perform free-hand routing very successfully so maybe I should see if he has any videos on that subject?" and the latest video I found was this one. Great job -- as always. I find you so inspirational. Keep up the great work!

Stew Mac prices on Amazon usually include their $10 shipping. Pro Tip: on acrylic templates tape the inside the router bearing is against so it doesn't heat up and melt it

Yeah I was wondering. Acrylic and heat ...... Why not just mdf or something else?

@@marvinstorm9153 I use both. the acrylic gives you the ability to see through the material and helps with measuring the setup. This can also be accomplished by using mdf and being sure of your measurements. The acrylic templates are kind of like a luxury item . lol

One thing to enhance your copies is to transfer center lines from acrylic templates to the MDF while attached. Great video - thanks!

At Lowes or Home Depot they have double sided carpet tape that will hold these perfectly. Nice and flat and strong hold. And yes, I keep my acrilic templates I made safe and use MDF for my main templates.

I have used Musiclily stuffs for quite some time now. Their Wilkinson stuffs have a whole lot of options. And they have great after sales support if you have problems or defects with your orders.

Cool Dan,Thanks I'll opt for the Musiclily, I think the depth info there on the template makes it a better choice; and the price difference makes it the best choice. But I'll be freehanding this kind of stuff for a while longer anyway. I wonder if they sell a bundle of these templates to get an even better deal? Need to save them pennies... Dan, thanks your videos are always very educational. I’m getting ready to route for a battery box, I have a template, what router bit do you use a top bearing? Also when you first start routing how do you ensure the bit doesn’t damage the template before you get low enough for the bearing to engage? Thanks in advance

I seem to remember on the stewmac videos, they just use double sided tape and don't mess with the tape/superglue combo.

With painters tape and superglue you only need to put it on either side of the template, not all the way around. I built my first ever guitar at Crimson Guitars in August 2020 and routed 2 humbucker cavities, neck pocket and control cavity as described previously and nothing moved at all. :)

I have the Jazz Bass templates and they are slightly (very slightly) on the tight side. I added a J pickup to a P-Bass I've had forever. Pickup squeezed in, but barely. It works perfectly, but I hope I never have to try and remove it.

You know, if you have the pickups, you can make templates out of 1/2in mdf for about 50 cents each. Just trace around the pickup and cut the hole including the line. I like to screw mine to the body. Just put the screws where the neck pocket will be,and where the bridge will be. Do them both at the same time.

pretty sure those both came from the same factory... the stewmac one will have gone through more QA than the other. That's usually the difference between direct from china options and local ones. The latter all being relative.. Happy to be corrected if stewmac actually produce their templates in the USA or elsewhere?

I feel okay about free handing the pickup cavities, I wish you showed us the neck pocket template. Seems like a more critical one, if I had to only choose one template. Have you tried using that one? Thanks!

I've used Musiclily products a few times and they've never disappointed. I'm not in a rush, though. Maybe if you want a product urgently stewmac is with the price difference.

For the life of me, I can't find a router bit the same radius as the MM bass pickup. Any ideas where I can find them? Right now, I'm using a 1/4 inch bit. That's the smallest I could find with a top mount bearing.

If you get turners tape it's every bit as aggressive as the painters tape and superglue method. I've found that carpet tape leaves a residue that I don't enjoy sometimes. It's already double sided and ready to go. I've been using it to hold templates down for years without a single failure. The two brands I have used are the one that Peachtree Woodworking sells and the XFasten Woodworking tape on Amazon. A lot of woodworkers also like Spectape but I have no experience with it.

Of course you tell me this after I just bought a roll of carpet tape 🤦‍♂️ I guess I can put painters tape down first then carpet tape on top to protect from the residue?

So I'm assuming you have to go balls deep with the router bit in the middle at first and work your way out. Otherwise you're routing your templates. Yes?

Luthier here, I fw musiclilly, their prices are way more reasonable, and quality is great. Not boutique quality but good enough to make something work pretty well. StewMac however is way overpriced for most things, on top of shipping costs. Never buying from StewMac

Looks to me like the Musiclily templates I have are actually direct forgeries of the Stew Mac templates. They even have the Stew Mac part numbers on them. :D

I stopped using StewMac when I found out their battery box is literally a Gotoh battery box that you can get on Amazon for $10. Theirs costs over $22 and that doesn't include their ludicrous shipping costs, which is usually a flat $12.99 no matter how small your package is. Conveniently, all of their product photos hide the Gotoh logo. StewMac has a lot of great stuff and some of it actually is exclusive to their site, but their prices are ridiculous. It only makes sense to use them if you're a full time luthier, everyone else is getting ripped off.

I'd rather make a backup MDF and use the acrylic, if you never make a mistake you'll always use the MDF, if you make a mistake then you go to the MDF until you buy a new one
