My friend just directed me to your video "Why your selfies suck! The best focal length for portraits". As a student with no income, I can afford to invest only $100. Which camera should I get so that I can take good portraits?

You won't get anything for $100. Unfortunately not even the cheapest lenses cost $100. But don't lose hope. Ask around family & friends, see if they own anything you can borrow. Make friends with photographers, offer to help out for free - you can learn from them
