This week, we are heading back to Ravnica Allegiance Standard for a deck I've been wanting to play ever since Lumbering Battlement was spoiled: Orzhov Blink! The primary plan of the deck-which is overloaded with powerful enters-the-battlefield creatures-is to grind out value in the early game with our random creatures and then eventually exile them all to Lumbering Battlement, giving us a huge vigilant threat. This puts our opponent in a tough position: either they die to our massive Lumbering Battlement or they are forced to kill our Lumbering Battlement, which gives us back all of our creatures, allowing us to reuse all of their enters-the-battlefield triggers and hopefully generating enough value that we take home the victory. Can the power of Lumbering Battlement make Orzhov into a real contender in Standard? Let's get to the videos and find out!

10:30 it did matter. If you stacked your trigger with Chupacabra resolving first, they would had only one creature to sac when Plaguecrafter resolved.

Zumbo all the triggers occur at the same time. Seth chooses the order and what each does on the stack before the opponent gets priority. Opp would see what the chupa is hitting no matter what,

@@leesalt Yes, but if the chupacabra effect was resolved BEFORE the plaguecrafter's, then the opponent would have to sacrifice the remaining creature (instead of in the video where only 1 of the opponent's creatures died as a result of the ordering)

If nothing else I dig the hell out of Lumbering Battlement's flavor. If I had any artistic skill I'd draw Lumbering Battlement being ridden by the weird gaggle of vampires, clerics, and chupacabras in the deck. Also that first person may be an Eternal Player and got their wires crossed. In Eternal the equivalent of First Strike only applies to attackers and has no effect when blocking.

I want to like battlement, but I think it's really bad given that it doesn't have trample. Trading your board full of threats for 1 big threat that can be chumped is not good. Plus when it's big it's actually a non-bo since it doesn't even die when blocked, so your stuff doesn't ever even return

@@SirDerpinmire I disagree. For one, you don't have to trade your entire board for the battlement. Second, battlement has vigilance, and can thus pressure your opponent while also blocking very well. Third, it often doesn't die in combat, but when the opponent wants to get it out of the way, they have to remove it and you get all your creatures back. Fourth, you can also sac it to Plaguecrafter to get your creatures back!

I actually made this deck yesterday but with Abzan colors so I could run knight of autumn and golgari find broker. It did really well, but needs to be tuned to find the optimal setup.

Sweet deck! I thought about your non-budget esper version. How do you think that deck would compare to an Abzan version opting for better exploring with jadelight, branchwalker and maybe a branchwalker? Abzan also enables Knight of autumn :)

Abzan could also be sweet with Lumbering Battlement. I like blue because it makes the infinite combo more likely, but the explore package is really strong.

I've been playing bw vampires a lot recently and I'm considering running 2 Fall of the Thran either in the main for single match or at least in the board for bo3. The gates deck takes time to get going and an early fall would buy you time and you could even blow it up with mortify. Thoughts?

Initially I had Justiciar's Portal in the deck, but it felt really inconsistent (drawing it with no creatures is brutal, and drawing it with just one bad creature like Dusk Legion Zealot or Seekers' Squire isn't very good). I ended up cutting it to make the deck more consistent. The upside is high (can do crazy things once we have stuff under Battlement) but the floor is really low.

the order of those triggers first game did matter, if chupacabra triggers before crafter, they have to sac the findbroker and don't counter the chupacabra effect

The order you stack Plaguecrafter Chupacabra is very important. You need to resolve Chupacabra before you resolve Plague, that means Chupes above Plague

I tried lumbering battlements in Selesnya but didn't find it to be too good. The explore with wildgrowth was good vs aggro but stacking explore didn't make much of a difference against golgari or control. And I found a lot of decks could go wider than battlements or chump every turn with insane value engines while getting in in the air. I like orzhov instead for midrange matchups. Also immortal sun was a star in many of those matches, straight up winning more games than battlements.

Godless Shrine is less than a ticket each, having a playset over the Orzhov Guildgates would have made this 8 tickets instead of 5, still WAYYY within what would be considered "budget" and would have improved the deck 10x.

Yeah, this video was already recorded, but future Arena videos are going to change the placement of the deck lists. The right doesn't work since it covers the stack, but moving it up higher (so it covers the opponent's time outs) gets it off the lands.

I don't think having a one-of Banefire is a bad idea. Expansion // Explosion is better against non-control decks, but Banefire can be a lifesaver against control.

I play too much limited so I didn't see the power of lumbering battlement. I forget that pacifism effects aren't prevalent in constructed. Even with a bunch of etb creatures it just seems so risky at first because I'm used to playing against cards like lawmage's binding. But in constructed there are fewer answers that don't cause it to leave the battlefield so it's ironically safer to go all in. I would've loved to hear you exclaim "who plays luminous bonds?!?" though cause that would've been hilarious.

Yeah, if Pacificms were more played it would make the deck a lot worse, but I don't think there are really any that see play in tier decks at this point.
