Discussing JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) enclosures as the best value for money storage solution for those that already have several HDDs of different sizes. Also a short review of the ICYBOX enclosure and if its any good.
I purchased the ICYBOX with my own money and have used it constantly for over a year.

I have one of the MediaSonic versions with RAID support. It’s a great product but it won’t do RAID 5 as most would expect. Instead you’d have to opt for RAID 50 which is a serviceable option. There is also a MediaSonic USB-C version 3.1 Gen 2, 10Gbps Version (model H82-SU31C) which should be faster.

I don't think that was available in Australia when I got this one but it definitely seems like the better option and makes raid much more viable for high speeds, thanks!

I bought one of these 10years ago and it never skipped a beat. All the drives where upgraded over time obviously started with 2tb than 6tb and now ive replace half with 8tb. I just with week bought a new one because well its been 10yrs lol and while it seems quieter and alot more shiny its near identical and im good with that. Took apart the older one and gave it a good freshen up and once over and its still came up looking decent very minor rust on the edges (live near the beach now so that salt air is a pain).

Great to hear! I'm hoping mine lasts till I can be bothered upgrading to a faster speed
@GanymedeXD
@GanymedeXD 4 месяца назад
Shiny and quieter? There is one very significant reason to upgrade after 10 years … shiny … irrelevant (nothing really changed to their design in 10 years and my 2013 Asustor is as shiny as it was on day one), fan noise … more than irrelevant … louder feels more relaxing … absolutely essential … speed! I got 5x18 TB in my enclosure and fast speeds are essential …

This is a fantastic primer on the DAS unit, though I can see you very soon wanting to move to NAS. The fact that you are using this as primary storage instead of as part of a backup strategy….I’ll keep you in my prayers dude. (P.S. Great video, you’re a fantastic presenter/editor/variousRU-vidSkillsHave-r, so I have smashed the subscribe button into a fine paste.)

Interesting enclosure but quite expensive here in EU. I ordered a smaller variant with 4 bays (IB-RD3640SU3) that costs 40% of the 8 bays one, let's see how it goes. I always have a Sinology NAS in mind, these enclosures work well (what I've read) even plugged to a Qnap/Sinology NAS as extra storage.

So if you already have a real nas you can just plug this one in with usb and it add drives. I have a synology 2 bay nas but thinking about getting a larger one. 2 x 18 tb isent enuff for me so thinking getting 8 x 18 tb drives but 8 bay nas is insanely expensive so this if it work is more affordable I think.

I've had other similar products from them in the past... one drive was killed by it. 3 others were wiped. And their customer service I couldn't even get ahold of.. haven't touched any of there stuff since.

Hey man, great video. I've been searching on youtube for the past hours to find out any information i can related to a device like this. Because, like you, i too would like to take out my hdd's from my setup and move them to a device like this one. I am looking for a device like this one because, and i'm not sure, a NAS like a synology knows only raid and formats the drives when you add them to it for the first time. And i don't want that to happen, i just want to move a hdd from a setup to a device like this and not be worried about formatting or things like that. What i wanted to ask you, because i've seen the video where you say that it "Sync's with your power ON/OFF PC", so my understanding is that when you turn off your PC the icybox will shutdown, also when you'll turn on your PC the icybox will turn on. But what i am curious also... does it have an option to, perhaps, i don't want the icybox to power on when i turn on my PC ? Perhaps when i turn on my PC, i want the icybox to remain Off and turn it on only when i need or want it to. Can the icybox do that ?
@BuyersGuyd
@BuyersGuyd Год назад
Yep absolutely, if you just press the Sync button it turns off the sync light and then it won't turn on or off with your PC and you'll just have to press the power button on the unit whenever you want it on or off. When you do turn it on all your drives will connect just as if they were USB drives being plugged in. Simple as

for just about $400-500 I was able to throw together a pc that could hold 8 drives and act as a full fledged similar to a synology nas with free nas software, granted you would have to buy the drives, granted this was just on pc part picker

This particular one says any size on the box but I wouldn't be surprised if it topped out at 12tb and they're assuming no one has any bigger than that. I've only tested it with 8tb per bay though and have had no issues

Luckily it's not much of a lock! A few minutes of lockpicking lawyer and you should be good! The keys have super light teeth anyway so raking a paperclip in there might just work

I really wish TrueNAS worked with jbod, I Got 8 different drives that are 500gb 300gb 1TB you name it, be nice to just throw them all in and make 1 big pool, Of course I wouldn't put anything important on it, but I do want to use it for backing up my steam games. In fact since it can't do jbod its why Im sticking with a mini itx build it only supports 4 drives, if it did work with jbod I have x99 system with 10 sata ports I'd use, but its not worth it.

“Raid for speed” your forgetting one of the biggest benefits of multi drive storage and RAID setup.. drive fault tolerance! I need to backup photos and videos that I could never get back if lost. I have most online but cloud storage is expensive.

@BuyersGuyd
@BuyersGuyd 2 года назад
The model number of this one is H82-SU3S2 but they also have a newer model with USB 3.1 gen 2 that basically gives you twice the bandwidth at 10gbps which would allow for a much faster raid setup. The new one is H82-SU31C

what is the speed compared with sata3?
@BuyersGuyd
@BuyersGuyd 2 года назад
I'm pretty sure sataIII is 6gbps and USB 3.0 is 5gbps. But actual speeds will depend on what files you're transferring. This model also has esata which is sataIII

The JBOD enclosure itself doesn't have a raid controller or anything on it no. Your PC itself has to do so. I wouldn't recommend installing an OS on an external enclosure

not having raid support is kinda of a huge dealbreaker for a lot of people i guess... if one drive goes down, all data on it is gone. I would personally not trust doing a software raid with this type of Hardware but that might just be me.
@BuyersGuyd

Each to their own for sure, not everyone has a need for it or would rather spend more for more features. I've been running software raid with this thing for 3 years now with 0 issues but computers are weird and anything can happen haha

Raid is not a backup it just allows you to keep on working (yes it's important) like a redondant psu in server in case of failure. Raid doesn't allow you to restore deleted files, corrupted data... The security of data lies to indépendant storage on different machines with multiple snapshots. If you have 2 backups in two sets of jbod disks you have 3 times your data. In fact New file systems don't care about the number and capacities of disks, disks are seen like pools where data are mirrored etc. in a way only the fs knows when the data are, maybe on 5 disks, in case of failure the fs heals to keep on having 2, 3 copies on multiples disks. What's more if you add 2 more drives the fs can re-balance data between your 7 disks Raid are dying, fs software "raid" are far more powerfull. I like to see like duplication on a bunch of spare disks because pools are what it is.
@GanymedeXD
@GanymedeXD 4 месяца назад
Why? Makes zero sense. One drive dies, you replace it. No loss at all. Except you use RAID which to me is useless.
@bryningtheaction

DON'T buy any seagate barracuda drives if you are going to use it as backup system. Also dont get them if you are going to have more then 2 HDD (or more) in one closure as theses HDD are not designed for NAS or DAS set-up.
