AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage - only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on RU-vid are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

Good plan. I went another direction. Less $$$, more power & versatility. I "studied" solar for about a year. I was getting paralysis by analysis ; so i jumped in with a simple Renogy 100W panel & PWM. Bought some connectors and away I went. We do most of our camping in the Pacific N.W. in wooded areas. They're not mounted to our 30'tt. We are NOT full timers but are out often 3-5 days at a time & a 2 month snowbird trip. We boondock about 75% of the time. I learned that if panels are not in direct sun they do little to no charging. So I "chase the sun". I purchased a new Champion 2000W Inverter generator for backup and occasional 110V. Doubtful I've burned 5 gals of fuel in 3+ years. This last Fall I added a 2nd 100w panel (in parallel) + a 400W portable inverter. We use the inverter to charge the phones, iPads, cameras, small appliance and laptops. The 2nd panel was a real game changer. Not only much quicker charge times(2-6v golf cart batteries) but we often take off in the truck to explore or we take a hike and are gone 1/2 the day. We point each panel about 45 degrees apart from each other to allow for the moving sun. Works like a dream. All in for

Hey Herb, I am there with you on the solar. I DID install a single 150 watt panel on the roof and bought two suitcases from Renogy to charge. I have used it once. This week, four years later, I purchased a Bluetti 150EB for exactly what you do. There are so many variables with solar and most of the time I am under trees with my camper. I haven't gotten out of the southeast yet camping so very little BLM land experienced. My boon docking is parking lots en route to my destinations so far.

Great video and entertaining as always. This budget friendly option will open a a lot of doors to the more budget constrained. On a side note, I took another step towards getting my first travel trailer. Sold the Mustang and bought a 2020 Chevy Silverado LT 4x4 with the max trailer package. Capable of towing 11,400 lbs, but I plan on buying a travel trailer that weighs approximately 5,100 pounds, so I should have more than enough truck.. Now it's time to save a little more $. Thank you for all the pearls of wisdom.

I love my Jackery 290 and my solar saga 60 watt panels, they are easy to use for the beginner!! The total price for my set up is $477. I bought my on cyber Monday for $377. A decent price.....the 500 and the 100 watt panels are $777, not sure if those on a budget could go that high but I highly recommend the Jackery system. Oh by the way....beer and hotdog budget would be a piece of bread instead of a bun😜😎✌️. Great video!!!

I really wanted one of these, but just couldn't justify the expense. Instead I went with the Suaoki brand which was quite a bit cheaper from Amazon. I am super impressed. We just used it on our trip through the US (pre-covid 19) and I was able to run my hair dryer, charge all our gadgets, laptops and phones...and we'd recharge it every few days while we were driving. It was quick to recharge with the 110 outlet in our truck. Cheaper and does the same job!

I have had one for a wile now. They do work and work great! one thing i did was wire a dc 12 volt to dc 24 volt step up inverter into my rv, (there cheap, less than 20 dollars) and it will charge the jackery just as fast as the ac charger from 12 volt rv system.

Hi! Are you saying you charge your RV battery directly from the solar panel? Do you need something in between? Thanks- I don’t think I need the battery pack unless it’s necessary to charge the RV battery. Are there cords to charge the RV battery included?

I also got the jackery 500 and paired it with a TWELSEAVAN 120W Portable Foldable Solar Panel Charger for Jackery Explorer. I get 65w charging in full sun, they plug together. When charged. When the jackery 500 is charged up, it will in 6 hrs then fully charge the sondors step ebike battery pack (that was depleted) to full. Step has a 36V 10.4Ah Lithium-ion battery, and the jackery has a 518 wh, and step is 374 wh (36 x 10.4). Jackery started at 85% full and was at 15% full, so its a good test that one battery (jackery) can charge another (sondors step ebike).

Thank you so much for this video. There are RV renters who can't install solar on the rigs; this takes care of that problem. Power out? This allows cpap, tv (hopefully 12 volt model) to run so the person can get news. Vandwellers don't have space- this fits the bill and no need for bulky batteries or tons of wires. I have a ramen budget so this is a little pricey, but not impossible to save for. There is also the harbor freight 100 watt solar panel system and 12 volt batteries for lighter budgets. Solar power is attainable- just have to save while the person does their research.

Nice review, Sean! I have a similar 500W unit from another company. It has two AC outlets that work fine.i have a robust solar system and three AGM batteries in my van, but I like the assurance of the portable battery. I don’t have the solar panels that go with the lithium battery, but it holds a charge for a long time, and is just for an emergency.

@Nonplused
@Nonplused 4 года назад
I like the Jackery because it is portable but it would be nice if it could also plug into the trailer battery for extended use beyond the 500 watt-hours or maybe even charge the trailer battery as well. Anyway I put about 300 watts of solar on my trailer for less that $2000 and the price of the panels has come way down, so I think people could do it now for probably less than $1200. I'll have to admit though I have never seen the panels making 300 watts. Probably because they are mounted flat. 13.4 amps is about the best charge rate but that is only at best 185 watts charging. I'm not sure if the limit is the bad angle for the panels or the battery absorption capacity. Anyway my system is a 130 watt panel, a 160 watt panel (added later), a 30 amp charge controller, 2 100 Ah AGM batteries, and a cheapy 900 watt inverter with a power bar plugged into it. Works pretty good for running devices, a TV, lights (mostly LED), the fantastic fan, the water pump, etc. but would not even come close to running the a/c. It even has trouble keeping up with the furnace for more than a couple of nights unless it is sunny in the day. I think it could run the microwave for limited use but we don't bother and the inverter is not wired into the RV 110v system. There is just the power bar located behind the TV and we plug all the devices into that. 24" LED TV also by the way. Half the battle is reducing draw. (PS I did not include the cost of the AGM batteries in the $1200, I am assuming you could go with 100 Ah deep cycle batteries from Costco. They work well and last longer than you would think if you don't freeze them.) There is lots to consider when designing your trailer power system. For example my first trailer, and most of them of that era, had a simple 1 stage converter that took over from the batteries when plugged into shore power and then a tiny little 5 amp battery charger that ran off the same system. So I always found it humorous when people would run the generator for hours through the shore power plug and then wonder why the battery went dead a few hours later when they were running all their incandescent bulbs at night. Charging batteries off a generator takes forever even with a 3-stage converter but simply buying a GoPower 2 stage converter would have helped these people a lot (and LED bulbs of course). I didn't say anything because I'd already learned from telling people to turn their fridge off before they go to a gas station or showing them how to position the top brace on a manual awning that my advice was not in any way welcome.

@rbadventures9747
@rbadventures9747 3 года назад
I think the problem with the implications of spending a lot of money for a solar makeover is that if you use rv parks and only boondock now and then as we all do, it is not necessary to do a complete upgrade. Our Lance is prewired for solar on the roof. However, we only boondock a few days at a time. We have A Renogy suitcase that can pointed directly at the sun. That along with a Jackery provides us with plenty of power. Also have a small inverter generator. Therefore a complete electrical makeover is not necessary. Far less money when not needed.

Hey guys, wrong thread but I couldn't figure how to respond to Key West. Here's some things you may have missed. Mallory Square deserved more. It's the only place I've seen the sunset applauded. There's a great restaurant bar there, wife stole my piña colada. Somewhere there's a restaurant under awning Gr8 Dungeness crabs. Off the beaten path looking for a hole in the wall place, we found one, cash only. Didn't want to walk to atm so we went across street, cool place. The phone booth looked Dr. Know's teleporter, good food. Went back next day to hole in the wall........no walls, great place. The butterfly aviary, fantastic. If you're nice Rhett, the flamingo, will make friends with you and if you now to him he'll preen your hair. A block off the main drag is Smoking Tuna, good food, great drinks and a guy that can wail on a harmonica. Mallory Square is touristy some of the rest are off the beaten path and they're the best. Oh, and don't forget where The Sidewalk Ends. There's a plaque marking the spot honoring Shell Silverstein. Lots of Great less notable places. Get away from the crowd. If you stay at a bed and breakfast you'll want fried chicken, 1 less early a.m. noise maker. Ditch the truck at a scooter rental place, don't need to worry about parking. Good video but did not talk about the solar controller. Is it part of the solar panels or part of the battery station? Thanks for the entertainment and informative videos.

Can you charge an EV with your trailer solar set-up? That is a video people would like to see. Maybe a collaboration with TFL truck.

I have a 4Patriots 2500W solar generator with 4 solar panels. Trying to figure out how to plug it into the side solar input jack for my travel trailer. The panels do not have a controller on the back of them as some do because the generator has one inside of its cabinet. I bought a 25’ cable to plug the panels into the solar jack off of eBay but don’t really know what else to do. Trying to utilize what I already have without overcharging my AGM battery.

Denny - Could you please share the cost for your setup? Btwn the solar generator & four panels what else is needed for electricity? I’m considering boondocking for awhile and don’t know if such is capable of powering an apt size fridge? Possibly I’ll have to wing it with ice filled coolers. Can you share usage hours for your setup for ie 📺, ☎️ charging, laptop, will it power a basic style electric coffee pot, a convection oven, a Nuwave portable induction/electric style burner, etc...

The 9.5 hr recharge time just doesn't happen in reality for daily use... you really need to connect 3 panels together to get it recharged in 3-4 hours, which is a good day for RV solar... I'm wondering if it could be done ✅

anybody car camping should definitely consider one of these .

Sean, I like the Jackery, but it will only run my CPAP one night and then needs to be recharged. I had to go with the Goal Zero 1400. Expensive, yes. But I can recharge it in 4 hours with my generator. The small models like the Jackery, unfortunately, don't cut it for me. I wish they did. I'd build a solar suitcase but I already have the generator. In about 6 months I can add solar. Cheers, love the vids, as always.

awesome will this run a mr coffee machine for tent campers, or need a e1000?
@LongLongHoneymoon

It has a 500W max output on the inverter. I'm afraid a coffee machine would probably overload it.

Hey Sean, dosen't the "C" portion of usbC happen at the other end of the cable?
@scottleggejr

USB 2.0 is 2.5 watts, and 3.0 is 5 watts. USB A which is the plug type on that unit is rated for 2.5 watts. I am pretty sure there are use-cases out there where USB A is used more than the spec.
@TSKseattle
@TSKseattle 4 года назад
Scott L is correct about USB "versions", but the USB-A is just the plug configuration, and "A" is the large end you plug the cable into the power source. USB-C would be the fitting for more modern phones and such. USB Micro-B or Mini-B were the previous standards and most non-phone stuff still use those. So... I don't need a USB-C at the source. All my cables have A on one end and Micro-B or C on the other end. That USB-C on the top of the solar panel would require a special C to C cable.

Don't let anyone talk you out of Solar. The initial cost is not as high as it once was. For full-time RV'ers, it is needed. Much quieter than a Generator. And is always there. A solar system will out last an RV. Think of that!
