Hey Vincent, I don't know if you still read these comments, but your videos inspired me to start my own sports photography RU-vid channel. Hopefully, you'll get back to it!

I've got a Sony a6000 and paired it up with the 70-200 f4 - really love the combination as the high frame rate and extra reach being a crop sensor works really well! I've done one vlog on football (soccer) if you want to see some of the images I got but think on a "budget" that's also a really good pairing!

Hows the autofocusing performance using an adapter witj non-native canon lens? Is it fast or just average? And what adapter being used?

Your advise is right on the money. To shoot at night and to shoot at college or NFL level, you do need a 400mm at 2.8 in the dark and those lenses cost from 3000 to 5500 used on Ebay and are a lot more than that at a store, but like Vincent said getting started you don't need all of this and a tele-converter does work very well in the daytime. I'm also glad that you mentioned using a crop sensored camera to give you more reach. Very good advise indeed.

I appreciate the effort you went into the details of the situations you’d benefit from using either lens. I must’ve browsed for hours until getting to this video which taught me more than I learned today on this. Thanks.

Great video I’m looking to shooting some high school football at night hoping to get on with max preps. You think with a canon 5D mark iii and a 70-200 f2.8 I can get good enough Quality shots to get started.

Excellent video, buddy! Rare to see. I was very into the 7D x 77d but i think that you've made very clear for me about the ISO. I was thinking that i was gonna miss those extra fps on the 7D, but this first 7D was born in 2009 - i shot within the sigma 2.8 and ISO on 3200. It's barely usable (i mean, its usable, but meh). Cheers from Brazil.

I have a canon 80d with a 24-70 f2.8 for volleyball and basketball - that does awesome. I have issues in certain gyms with bad lighting sometimes. The camera is about $1,000.00 now since the 90D is out. However, the lens will put you out about 2k. If you can't afford that, and you just have a regular 3.5 - 4.5/5.6 lens, then i would recommend that you do not lean too much into getting the action shot. Rather, get the less movement ones. Like him standing and maybe a holding a crouching position right before he goes for the kill...grrr. sorry i got a little excited. This will allow you to lower the ISO and the shutter speed to about 1/250th and it will result on a cleaner image. Don't forget to fix the white balance if your images are coming out yellow/orange. You can correct that with editing under the temperature settings. Good Luck!

Good evening Vincent, All the with from Georgia, I would like to first thank you for making those volume photography videos. It really helped me get a handle on what I need to do before I get started. I wanted to know, where did you get your pricesheet with example photos from? I have been looking everywhere for them and I've had no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Any updated thoughts in late 2019? Noticing the prices dropping a bit and the tech/adjustment to the emergence of it shifting the scene. I may do some 1080 video occasionally but sports photography seems to be losing its appeal in retail-land. For example my current research says I can find a decent shot at a full frame Canon 6D mark ii used for the same prices you mention in this video. Do you have any thoughts on that or am I misinformed?

Dillon since there was no reply to my question, thought I’d update to help others. I ended up finding a used 1Dx (only 17k shutter) for $1500 and a used canon 70-200 ii for $850. I really had to hunt but I’m certainly happy with this “better” setup for marginally more investment. It’s worth it. Now if only Coronavirus would go away.

Will my Canon 60D work for sports photography? Just wondering if it is, I have a 18-35mm Canon kit lens and Tokina 11-16mm Wide Angle Lens. Also a battery grip for my DSLR too. Thanks for your time.

Good intro video. I highly recommend a 70-200 f2.8 as your first lens. It is the most versatile lens in your arsenal. It lacks the reach for high school and above outdoor sports but is great at so many other things. As you said, the Tamron G2 is an incredible lens (the G1 is optically the same and can be had for as little as $600) IMO the 150-600 is a little long for a crop body for youth sports (high school it's great but youth it's pretty long). Lens first and body second. I HIGHLY recommend the 70-200 f2.8 first. No body is going to help nearly as much as that lens, especially compared to the kit lenses. I shoot mostly Nikon so hear are my recommendations. If you can afford the D500, I would get it after the lens. After that, I would drop to the D7200 for it's great value (less than 1/2 price new). You lose the D500 focus system, which is better than the D850 (yes I know it's the same module but many other bird photographers and myself agree on this; if you think kids are hard on AF try some small birds in flight). Unprocessed web images up to 51K and printable images to 12K for the D500 and 12K and 6400 for the D7200. If you want to pick it up to the next level for night photos, I highly recommend a used D4; which can be had used for 2000 in great condition and under 50K. Stick to the D7XXX series as the build quality is far superior to the other DX bodies. I recommend going to a camera store and actually holding them. Pick up a D500 and D750, and then tell me which one is build better. Notice, I never recommend any FX camera here besides the D4, that'd because they are meant for portraits and landscapes and not as much sports. The D850 can pull it off but the D500 is much better at it and is 1/2 the cost. A used D4 is a much better value and then you can save up for a better lens. The Nikon 200-500 is the best value lens in their entire line up IMO. Fast AF and sharp at f5.6 on DX. I went with it over the Tamron 150-600 G2 because the AF is faster (especially for birds in flight). It is a little long for smaller youth sports but will be handy for bigger fields or when you have to stand further back. For smaller kids I highly recommend the 70-300 VR G (model 2161). This is the older FX lens which has FAR superior optics and AF system. This is NOT your 70-300 kit lens. You can pick it up in mint used condition for 300. It's not nearly as heavy but it's only 1/2 the zoom (photography is all about compromises). The newer AF-P lens is much more expensive for the new AF system which is not much of an improvement to warrant more than double the cost. If you have 2000-3000, I recommend looking at the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 or picking up a used 300 f2.8 VR used. Vince went over this in a previous video and it boils down to convenience of the zoom vs the slight sharper and faster AF of the prime (this trade off is everywhere in photography). Whatever you do, don't get a superzoom (even the new Tamron 18-400). These lenses are all about comprises. AF speed and accuracy is quite a bit slower than a dedicated zoom (you will miss a lot of pictures) and color rendition is not accurate and very soft.

"I recommend going to a camera store and actually holding them." I've been having a difficult time in my area finding a camera store that has the camera bodies I'm interested in on the floor to get them in my hands to see how they feel. Obviously every area is different but are there any common places where you have success finding cameras? The majority of the shops where I've looked only have used stock so they typically don't have the body that I'm looking to test.

The_Rick_14 I'm in NJ. There are no stores within 20 miles but a good amount within 50, including NYC. Depending on your budget situation, plan a city weekend trip that may help your significant other get more involved. Alternatively, you may consider a rental service. Where are you located?
@therick14d
@therick14d 6 лет назад
I'm outside Orlando. There is a nearby rental service that I just found that works by appointment only for in-store requests, and I was leaning towards the rental option anyway because I'd like to try out a 2.8 in some of the gyms around here to see if I'd have to go even faster with 1.8 primes instead for indoors to get the settings I'd like. I'll reach out to them and see if they'd be willing to let me spend a few minutes handling the cameras that I'm interested in to get a feel for them before deciding. Thanks.
@johnsg8
@johnsg8 6 лет назад
The_Rick_14 Sounds like a good option. As far as indoors, the faster the better but the more limited. Primes are best for wrestling and covering half a basketball court because you'll save a full stop but DOF becomes an issue if you're too close,e.g. shooting from the baseline during a layup. The 70-200 is a great option for a sideline shooter but is too tight for baseline on DX. Which body do you use?

Currently have a D3400 that I've been using for a few months now. That plus the 70-300mm that came with it have been a nice pair for around $600 for me to get some experience and determine if I wanted to get more serious with sports photography. I've only been able to do a few afternoon softball games so far and in the bright light of day, even at 300mm and f6 I can keep motion blur out of my pictures and keep them clean and have been happy with the action shots I've been able to get. But I know as soon as the sun starts to go down or a thick cloud rolls over that starts to change and the tiny buffer on the D3400 I expect will cause me to miss some shots or have to pick my shots more carefully than I'd like in other sports where the breaks between the action are potentially smaller. It won't be my full-time job, but I'd still like to get a few dollars here and there for my time and skill. But my main motivation is that I find action photography to be really fun and love being around the atmosphere that sports provide being an athlete myself, albeit back in the day ha. Knowing that this is something that I want to continue doing, I've started looking into better gear and was pretty set on the D500 until I started seeing some reviews of the Sony a7iii. The idea of a full-frame that does 10fps and can do it silently for only $2,000 is really tempting, but I know it will come at the cost of the 70-200mm losing a lot of reach for field sports without the crop factor. Lots to consider and I do feel that doing some rentals will really be the best deciding factor for figuring out what I really want and what I can live without.
