A lot of technology runs into the “Law of diminishing returns”. At some point it costs twice as much to get something 10% better.

Even with some lower spec Photonis Tubes I cant tell the difference from that compared to my issued PVS14 that was a Gen3 tube. The only real place I see the difference is absolutely low low, almost non existent light and I can still sorta see but barely but thats almost always in an indoor setting. Outdoors I see perfectly fine because of ambient light from stars - even on no moon nights. I think I paid like 800 for the tube, GP, no blems, put it in a Nocturn Industries Tanto and havent complained since.
@elijahanderson6736
@elijahanderson6736 Год назад
I ended up with Photonis Vypers in green. They have 2150 FOM/30-31SNR and gain equivalent to gen 3 vs the 4G photonis whites that is half(or less). They ended up being less than 6400 shipped. They are in a Katana housing. They are freaking sweet and I really appreciate the auto gating in my old ECHO 14 so I am glad these are the same. Saved some money, I can see in the dark and the money I would have spent is being spent on spare parts, food, water, batteries, etc.

@@rileyfrench3837 I got mine from Arkayne (they are a photonis dealer). WP Echo tubes. 2600 FOM 32 SNR and 2545 FOM and 33 SNR in the Vyper housing (Same as Katanas). WAAAAAY better than my Omni 7 Gen 3 GP in urban environments by far and on par in low light.

Only bad thing about Gen 2+ tubes are they slowly degrade over the entire lifespan (meaning you only get about half of the advertised lifespan as a good image. Gen 3 doesn’t degrade until after the guaranteed lifespan. Also gen 2+ isnt as good in very low light. For most people, they will be adequate though, especially if they are significantly cheaper.

Whats a solid place to start if i want to the best bang for my buck with monocular but end up using a NVB-58 Bridge. What brand and model? Im starting to understand that SNR will always be a priority. Will be used for low-light shooting (eventually), mainly as SHTF scenario type tool.
@nocturnal_walker
@nocturnal_walker Год назад
I got your point, that WP is not that much better then GF, and comparing those two images confirms that. If we really want to compare prices of white vs green phosphor, then please compare tubes prices, not devices, because total price of device is not determined just by tubes - housing, lenses and other features are all affecting final price. Usually difference is few hundredths dollars per tube, depending on tubes specs and manufacturer. For example, photonis white phosphor tubes are 300-500$ more expensive then greens. Or are those devices identical with exception of tubes ?
@rileyfrench3837
@rileyfrench3837 Год назад
It was a very generalized and non-scientific comment based on plentiful older/Omni surplus tubes and how affordable they can be compared to spending more on top of the line equipment (we own and use high end and budget units). The price to performance ratio definitely favors green surplus tubes because of this. Many vendors don’t even offer green tubes as an option anymore, hence why the used market applies when discussing white vs green pricing. That being said, you have some great points and we appreciate the discussion.
@Shimitzu
@Shimitzu Месяц назад
you could probably show $1500 gen2+ here and the performance would be also similar. It is just too bright to see the difference. Get 10km away from a city to let that SNR and EBI work

yeah all tubes look the same when you have a ton of light like in this clip, when your actually in a dark environment in the woods with zero ambient light from the moon, headlights, streetlights, or from houses is when you actually see the difference in the tubes
@rileyfrench3837
@rileyfrench3837 Год назад
Which is why I own Filmless units. But not everyone can afford them, nor does everyone live in the middle of nowhere. And to be quite honest, even my high spec Filmless stuff struggles in the woods on moonless overcast nights. To your point though, tube type/quality can be the difference between needing or not needing some supplemental IR. Regardless of any of these factors, and until something changes with pricing/availability, it is my opinion that surplus green tubes have a better “price to performance ratio” than anything else.

Some Omni 8 green tubes perform great, spend the rest of the money on a high quality laser and a couple thousand rounds and train, you’ll be better off. Unless you have allot of money then obviously buy the top spec.

@@ArmondHickey Since you brought it up, a reminder for people who didn’t bother reading the video title: The units being discussed are binocular NVDs (two tubes), which is essentially double the price of a monocular + the cost of a more expensive housing. So the prices quoted in the video might scare some people, when in fact there are some good monocular devices out there which cost far less. Those are the real budget options.

My gen 3 white phosphorous PVS-14's I just got in a few weeks ago are a $3,800 unit and much better than the one featured here so you don't have to spend 12K. (And I know its hard to show the quality uploading to youtube but just letting people know its not that bad anymore).

@rileyfrench3837 6 месяцев назад
Hopefully they are just phosphor, not phosphorus. Much better than what? Also, the prices quoted here are for binos not monoculars (the title of the video gave that away). One of which is a 24UA Filmless DTNVS, which do indeed fetch in the neighborhood of $12k. Monoculars vary greatly in price, but typically cap out at $4,500

You aren't paying 8k more for WP, you're paying 8k more because of the low light performance of the newer tube compared to that 15 year-old one. Kinda odd that you chose to compare night vision devices in a setting with plenty of light.
@rileyfrench3837
@rileyfrench3837 Год назад
Relax. I’m not getting rid of my Filmless units any time soon. But any experienced NV user can appreciate the price to performance ratio of plentiful older/cheaper green phos tubes. Perfectly acceptable for those looking to spend less. Also, this is just opinionated commentary, not some scientific low light comparison video between specific tube types.
