BudgetBunny: Treating Mites In Rabbits

Patchy fur loss with mild to severe flaking along the rabbit's back or ears is the hallmark of Cheyletiella parasitovorax, the most common rabbit skin mite. Hairs at the border of the bald spot come out easily in clumps, usually with some coarse flakes of skin attached. Fur mites may or may not cause itching. Your veterinarian may examine a scotch-tape preparation or skin scraping under the microscope for the presence of mites, but mites are sometimes difficult to detect. Luckily, mites are usually eradicated with relative ease. Classic treatment is with injectable or oral ivermectin, given in treatments two weeks apart. More recently, Revolution (selamectin) has been used effectively. A kitten dose of Revolution is applied between the shoulder blades and is repeated once a month for at least three doses. Apply to the back of the neck or other area where the bunny can't readily groom it off. It is essential to thoroughly clean your rabbit's cage and exercise areas after each treatment as well as treat all pets in the household to control reinfestation, since fur and dander in the environment may contain mite eggs.

You're only applying the treatment topically so I treat all my rabbits one after the other then thoroughly clean the syringe so the solution doesn't crust in it and I can use it again when I need to. My vet also gave me more syringes when I asked for them.

Dear Budget Bunny, thanks for doing this video and sharing your knowledge. This is exactly what I was looking for. I recently took in a "rescue" rabbit and he appears to have mites. I have a call into a vet to schedule a scraping so we can get a confirmation. Your video shows me what I need to know for treatment. And I really enjoyed watching your buns. Clearly very happy bunnies with an interesting pen to run around it. Not "boring" at all!

Yes thank you, very helpful. My rabbits aways was in a cage, and never got sick. I decided to let them run around in the yard and they started peeling in their nose and ears. It must be the grass.

Thank you for talking about this. I have a long haired rabbit, and he was treated with revolution in two doses after I noticed flaking on his butt. About a month later, the mites are back with vengeance. I know sometimes I have trouble finding time to brush him because of school, (like I can’t brush him every single day, but I get it in once or twice a week) Idk if he’s considered obese at all, and if that could be making it hard for him to groom himself, but I’m calling my vet in the morning. I was feeling like crap like I did something wrong, but it’s good to know that maybe the revolution just didn’t work.

When I actually give them the Revolution they were sitting on my lap. I was just sitting beside the table. Rocky was hopping around on the table while I measured out his dosage but it's kind of high up.

My baby bunny has gotten this infection and me and my brother were brushing her and we noticed this scab like thingys and we don’t k ow what it is she has also got a cut on her lip and ear and I’m very scared I don’t want her to pass away like her sister I love her and I want everything to be ok for her and my brother did some googling and it could also from dental thingy like if they are having the wrong type of foods like too much treats sooo we have to stop giving her the food from our local pet shop and we are giving her nuggets with no treats

Yea it makes me nervous even for the animal it's intended for. Look how many things are sold in pet shops that aren't actually good for the pet! If my vet hasn't okay'd it then I don't use it. Thanks for watching :)

A month ago got Revolution from our very for our Bunny. Vet said that there is a new formulation and it hasn't been approved for use on bunnies. The very had to specifically order the old formula, which is apparently still available (not sure if it's still being made, or if it's just still in some warehouses). Just something to be aware of regarding using something on your Bunny which has changed and is no longer approved for use on bunnies.

Also Advantage kitten or small cat 5 to 9 lbs works. I've used it many many times for extreme infestations.

we are about to start a round of revolution on your two female rabbits that are bonded how long after its applied will they need to stay separated so they dont groom each other and get sick

If you give the flea treatment revolution the vet has suggested this will it hurt the bunny if he seems to scratch it then lick it ?

I still need help my bunnies have mites all on her nose and near her eyes pls pls pls help 🥺😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I don’t want to see her suffer😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I really need help and I don’t have a vet near me because there is only one vet where I live that does spaying/nurturing and idk if there good or have dealt with this and it’s far from here

The only way to properly treat and eradicate mites is to see a vet. They can do a scraping to confirm or suggest if it is something else and get a medication / dosage from them. You can easily google vets in your area to find out who sees exotics and speak with them to confirm that they have a rabbit savvy vet on hand and book an appointment. Hope your rabbit is feeling better soon!

when my rabbits got mites it was horrible! the mites grew very fast. Thumper actually had raw skin on this lower back and Binky started pulling out her fur! they got a series of injections because i didn't even know there was another treatment option, although i think my case was too severe at that point. my rabbits are mostly indoors so my vet said she usually sees indoor rabbits contract mites from carefresh bedding. needless to say i stopped using that immediately!

FYI my local farm store rural king sells apple flavored ivermectin. I give a very small amount on a strawberry or carrot it works good as well

my rabbit has farm hay in her cage on the floor and in her hay rack and litter box and she eats farm hay i have never seen any bugs in it but do u have any suggestions?

I've heard reports that revolution can still work on even severe cases but since there is a chance it may not I think in those cases its best to go with the injection since it's a sure cure. I hope your bunnies are okay! That sounds awful! :( My vet also mentioned bedding but as I don't use it and we had bought farm hay about a month prior I think it was the hay.

i have a baby bunny and it has this dandruff like thing and it is hard and i cant remove it by my hands....its not having hair loss though.... and not scratching wildly or shaking its body.... and i didnt see anything moving in my bunny's fur what do you think is it??

I have had to use flea spray on my rat one time. it was clear he didnt like it..he started wheezing and freaking out..im sure it was too rough on him..but it was the only option i had..(it did work but after 2 months) So i do agree its not for small mammals

i ordered revolution for my rabbits. it was such a rip off. each tube (there were 3) was about 1 cm big, and i needed to use it for 3 rabbits! each weighing about 10 lb. it barely contained any drops! all of it combined was not even as much as 1 dosage for one of your rabbits!

Does my rabbit have mites? I always seem to see crusty yellow discharge from his eyes, and I always have to take it out. I always see him cleaning himself, and scratching himself during playtime. He is my first bunny and I'm scared if he has it.

about how much did everything come down to the first time you had your bunnies treated with revolution and the injection? i have two bunnies as well . i'm pretty sure it varies with different vets but i just wanted to have some idea.

iPhone won't let me do pages, so ya lol, tell me more about the revalushen? Are you using cat or dog and what weight class for the meds? I am vary despite at this point, we don't have mites but we can't find flea meds for the rabbit and bunny, and I didn't know you could use revalushen on them, thank you

Please help, I recently discovered a hole in my rabbits neck and its deep and it has blood. My mom won't pay for the surgery because its A LOT of money, is there anyway to cure it without surgery?

Hi I'm looking for help understanding the dosage. I noticed that you said the dosage was for kittens but when I looked up the concentration for kittens its 15 mg not 60mg. 60mg is for cats 15-.1-22lbs. What is the concentration should I use?

Concentration is how strong it is. there are only 2 concentrations. 60 or 120. The chart she showed gives the amount of mililiters needed by weight for either one. If you pause the video on your phone you can take a screen shot photo of the chart.

Can someone please please please help me?!? I love my rabbit so much but I've noticed he is loosing fur around his neck and he is scratching a lot. I see red😣 and I think its blood. I feel like its very serious,but it might be because he scratching a lot. WHAT DO I DOOOOO?!?😭😭😢😢😩.

+Areeba Rizwan ivermectin is about $30-$50 at any feed store. give them about 0.02cc per lbs. every other week until you don't see the fur loss. it's about $300 just to have one rabbit in the vet. ivermectin an revolution is the only thing that will work to fight off fur mites.

I just noticed my bunny has a decent sized patch of missing hair it’s not really bald because there is some hair left he is a house bunny and their are no other bunny’s that might have caused this could this be mites or something else my mom says it might just be him shedding and it’s part of the process should I be worried? Also their is no dandruff near the patch or dead skin

fur mites being the least severe, right. half my herd is infected with this mite. I've tried ivermectin both orally and on the skin. but my rabbits keep having white dandruff and some fur loss, I've been cleaning my cages non stop but the mites will not go away. I can't show rabbits looking like that. :(

Unfortunately,, one of my rabbit have fur mites and it was a severe stage ... so I went to the vet and it was treated with Uvemec , I think it is the same as evermacten because I had read the paper inside the box and it was made for mites and mage .... maybe its a different name in my country. . anyway my rabbit is way batter now but not fully healed and only had taken the first injection .. I have some issues now so I can't go to the vet. he gave me the medicine and lots of syringes .. but Im afraid to give the injection myself. .. will the oral treatment be enough to solve the problem? ? and I have another adult rabbit and 3 baby rabbits ... the baby ones had mites and I treat it with a cream called Mage Zal and it works but I want them all to have a full recovery and if I suspect any case of ear mites , can I use this method?? my rabbit cages are close so it seems to spread out and want to get rid of it for good. and thanks for the video ...lovely bunnies ♥

Jiipt 15 I also have a lion head she has a bald spot on her back and neck. She has ear mites it spreads quickly.We are trying tea tree oil and mineral oil mixture for 4 days to see the progress if their isn't any progress we are going to the vet I don't know if that would work for you.

How do you prevent your rabbits companion to lick off the revolution? One of my rabbits is currently being treated for ringworm but every time I apply the product to her skin my other rabbit comes to her aid and licks it right off. This worries me for both of them. :/

Agnete Winther can you put a cone on them??? or depending on where the ring worm is possibly wrap it up??? I've never had ringworm but it isn't good if an animal gets it as it spreads.

Aussie Bunnies It is in her neck/behind her ears, so I don't think it can be wrapped up. It would also be a pain to take it on and off two times a day for her treatment. I don't know how a cone could help since it is not herself licking it off.

Aussie Bunnies Oh, so putting a cone on both of them? Well, that might solve it but that would I guess also prevent them from cleaning and grooming themselves and her treatment is suppose to continue for another 3 weeks. Do you know where I can get cones for rabbits?

I have a bunny that has ear mites and has fur mites she is suffering pretty bad I want to know two things I give her Timothy Hay can Timothy Hay create these for mites she also has runny eyes how do I take care of her I don't know of any veterinarians in this area where I live that treats rabbits I am trying my best to save her life I also use mulch for her area for pooping and peeing I do not have her potty trained to a box she is in a big crate or I should say a big rabbit cage in our garage and I'm really concerned we spend a lot of time in our garage with her and we play with her and talk to her and better and she will not let you hold her she's very scared this is the way we got her and I love her dearly and I need to help her please help me

Hey how’d you go with your bunny??? I also have a very old rabbit and he’s had runny eyes for like 7 years... I took him to the vet and they just gave me these eye drops and they may have helped for a second but obviously it’s from another issue like his teeth or something. Anyway now my rabbit has mites and I don’t like going to vet because he’s so old and it’s traumatic and last time she couldn’t even help me. So now I just bought this revolution at the pet store and applied it to him and hopefully it will fix it. I also reckon the hay I get from the local pet shop gave him these mites.
