Thanks to Mr. "Buffalo Joe" McBryan himself, who flew this bird back to Yellowknife and is seen in the video, for allowing me to get up close to this amazing aircraft! Buffalo Airways is an airline based in Canada's Northwest Territories, which operates a number of World War II era airplanes across the vast Canadian North, including this DC-3. If you've watched Ice Pilots NWT, you'll know the history behind WZS, their most famous DC-3. It was manufactured in 1942, and served the Royal Air Force as KG330. However, this particular bird's claim to fame is not just that it flew in World War II, but it also flew in D-Day. It was also the one Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden flew in an episode of Ice Pilots NWT! Once I heard that this bird was in Red Deer (a small city halfway between Edmonton and Calgary) for maintenance, I knew I had to see it on the move. Here we have it starting up and departing runway 35 at Red Deer Regional Airport back to Yellowknife. ATC is included, and I hope you enjoy what is now the oldest (moving) aircraft on my channel!
Thanks for watching!

A timeless piece of design. Both from an aesthetic and practical standpoint. When all of us are dead and gone there will still be a DC-3 out there, flying slightly above cloud level at 10,000 feet. The sun shining on aluminum while it continues on its mission. Faithful servant.

Don’t forget this same plane is a “R4D” in the U. S. Navy! I flew many hours between NAS New Orleans and NAS Pensacola , Florida in the 1950’s!

In danmark there is a airshow called Verløse Air Show and has a DC-3 always coming to the airshow! I have been up in the cockpit and seeing all the old switches and buttons brings me this 80s feeling i never got because im 15 years old.

Buffalo Joe and Mikey... Love that bird..keep it flying... Jeeperz it is sexy standing still and silent. Just thinking that that bird might have flown over my Grandpa in the 6 th of June when he was headed to France gives me chills. He is no longer with us but that beautiful airplane still is and looking great. Keep up the good work men. I am now a subscriber to PLANE SAVERS and love it too.

If all of the modern vehicles had been removed, you could have been watching footage from the 1940's and 1950's!

Ungainly looking yet beautiful in flight (once she finally got off the ground!). Reports I've seen from all generations of pilots who have flown these planes are that they handle quite nicely and are enjoyable to fly!

I used to work on the DEWLine 1972- 1984, we used to stagger around the Arctic in a collection of DC3's & C47's. Even had one with an auxillary engine installed in the loo for cold weather starts.

Mikey McBryan and team are going strong on a new project. One of the original D Day DC 3 Gooney Birds has recently been found and is in the process of returning to the air for the 75th anniversary of that historic day here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n5clU9Z-z4c.html

just have to ask.. and sorry about this.. but is this the same bird that suffered collapsed a landing gear on a small landing strip that serviced the BCR expansion in the 70's ? (the railroad never did get finished, not your fault) Just wondering, because I was there after the mishap. Another DC-3 was assigned, I think form Smithers, BC.. to fly to Ft. Nelson and deliver our mail at the time.. flew in every day.. never forget the sound of that set of engines in the overcast skies :-) I might have been 9 or 10 at the time.. I thnk around Christmas '72 ? (could be "73... I'm getting old) LOL

In this day and age it's awesome to hear a controller say that there is a DC3 out on thr field. What that Buffalo Joe himself out there. Also, there is nothing as awesome as the sound of large radial piston engines starting up

Awesome Alex! I can never get enough of that bird! Many years ago I worked for Plummers lodges on Great Bear Lake, and I went out with the co-pilot of one of these beauties. Had the privilege of flying in and watching one of these old girls take off and land on a 5000 ft gravel strip almost everyday!

I'm not Shure of you have ever heard of field aviation at Rand Airport in Johannesburg. At field in the seventies I worked at building and maintaining the Pratt &Whitney radials. I have flown many times in these. My highlight was flying in a Canadian company geo terexes Catalina flying boat. It had two radials, and was used for Aerial survey work
