I grew up in Western NY just outside of Buffalo, and I couldn’t believe that there was no place to get a good beef on wick (some call it ‘wick’), when I went away to college. It’s been years since I’ve had it and today I just thought…..how hard could it be? Beef bottom round is done, sliced against the grain sitting in the juice, the rolls are made, (Kaiser with caraway & coarse salt), & got a fresh jar of horseradish. Fresh slaw on the side. We eat in 10 minutes! Oh this manna from Heaven!
I had my first one today at a place that you would not imagine O'maddy's in Gulfport Florida and it was out of this world delicious. It will not be my last one.
I have had both. Nothing like Buffalo's. Close but not quite. Up there..the horseradish is fresh! And our roll is better. But..if missing home..I go there to OMaddys
Fascinating stuff I never heard of the sandwich and never knew it was a thing. Never been to Buffalo, I grew up in New York City moved to California about 14 years ago. I recently discovered an anchor bar franchise in Anaheim so I had to go. On their menu I saw this sandwich and I gave it a try. The sandwich was really good but I’m sure it’s so much better in Buffalo. And even though this was a franchise the wings were absolutely fantastic. I will definitely go back.
bnynjg08231991 you do realize that it's only 20 minutes away and this is where people moved to get away from the nonsense a buffalo. So yeah it's Buffalo especially to the people that grew up in the area and moved over here
Damn shame gotta drive that far to get a good beef on weck huh? The old timers all around past away and kids took over. Slowly but surely..hard to find the true and tried old fashioned beef on weck carved in front of your and pick your cut. Or that horseradish that blows your nose out and u knows it's fresh. THIS is why I come here when I am home!
Swiston's in Tonawanda was always my favorite place for beef on weck. Maybe because I grew up in Tonawanda. Although, they seem to have gotten skimpy these days unfortunately. I'll def have to try Schwabi's though.
