Buffy goes into the sewer tunnels to save Jesse (remember him), and Xander skips chemistry to come along and try to help. They talk briefly about what kills vampires: X: "Okay. Crosses. Garlic. Stake through the heart." B: "That'll get it done." about a minute later: X: "So what else for vampire slayage?" B: "Oh, fire, beheading, sunlight, holy water - the usual."

I never noticed that they brought so many side characters back all at once. I guess it felt natural because they were all characters you'd expect to see at school and reappeared once the mains got back to school. I suppose they could have delayed reintroducing some of them to a future episode or a scene later in the episode if most weren't about to get kidnapped. Giles response to Snyder saying, "No, actually, that would be one of the five." seemed like an unnecessarily snarky way to talk to his boss, especially when Snyder was correct. He wasn't talking about his literal sense of smell, but claiming to have a special ability to know that Buffy is a nogoodnick. That kind of metaphorical use of real sense verbs is pretty standard, and was clearly what Snyder was doing even before he explained what it was he could "smell"

Why would you want to escape the objectively best decade. Also, I can't believe I remember all these songs, but nothing about this episode.

I disagree with your take that Season 1 was "garbage" Season 1 was a bit disjointed compared to later season because Buffy was a mid-season replacement for another show, therefore they had less time (12 eps instead of the regular 22) to find their footing. It gets much better from this season on.
