Now that your big eyes have finally opened,
Now that you're wondering how must they feel,
Meaning them that you've chased across America's movie screens.
Now that you're wondering how can it be real
That the ones you've called colorful, noble and proud
In your school propaganda
They starve in their splendor?
You've asked for my comment I simply will render:
My country 'tis of thy people you're dying.
Now that the longhouses breed superstition
You force us to send our toddlers away
To your schools where they're taught to despise their traditions.
You forbid them their languages, then further say
That American history really began
When Columbus set sail out of Europe, then stress
That the nation of leeches that conquered this land
Are the biggest and bravest and boldest and best.
And yet where in your history books is the tale
Of the genocide basic to this country's birth,
Of the preachers who lied, how the Bill of Rights failed,
How a nation of patriots returned to their earth?
And where will it tell of the Liberty Bell
As it rang with a thud
O'er Kinzua mud,
And of brave Uncle Sam in Alaska this year?
My country 'tis of thy people you're dying.
Hear how the bargain was made for the West:
With her shivering children in zero degrees,
Blankets for your land, so the treaties attest,
Oh well, blankets for land is a bargain indeed,
And the blankets were those Uncle Sam had collected
From smallpox-diseased dying soldiers that day.
And the tribes were wiped out and the history books censored,
A hundred years of your statesmen have felt it's better this way.
And yet a few of the conquered have somehow survived,
Their blood runs the redder though genes have paled.
From the Gran Canyon's caverns to craven sad hills
The wounded, the losers, the robbed sing their tale.
From Los Angeles County to upstate New York
The white nation fattens while others grow lean;
Oh the tricked and evicted they know what I mean.
My country 'tis of thy people you're dying.
The past it just crumbled, the future just threatens;
Our life blood shut up in your chemical tanks.
And now here you come, bill of sale in your hands
And surprise in your eyes that we're lacking in thanks
For the blessings of civilization you've brought us,
The lessons you've taught us, the ruin you've wrought us --
Oh see what our trust in America's brought us.
My country 'tis of thy people you're dying.
Now that the pride of the sires receives charity,
Now that we're harmless and safe behind laws,
Now that my life's to be known as your "heritage,"
Now that even the graves have been robbed,
Now that our own chosen way is a novelty --
Hands on our hearts we salute you your victory,
Choke on your blue white and scarlet hypocrisy
Pitying the blindness that you've never seen
That the eagles of war whose wings lent you glory
They were never no more than carrion crows,
Pushed the wrens from their nest, stole their eggs, changed their story;
The mockingbird sings it, it's all that he knows.
"Ah what can I do?" say a powerless few
With a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye --
Can't you see that their poverty's profiting you.
My country 'tis of thy people you're dying.

I am one of only 400 people surviving from the Susquehanna tribe. There was less than a hundred left of our people after the Pickerton brothers killed my ancestors off. This song always makes me cry and my whole body gets shivers. I cannot describe how it hurts to see how they lie in schools. I spoke up all through out school about the truth Native Americans have gone through. When teachers dared to keep the truth from the students.

One of the most amazing and powerful protest songs ever written. It should be taught in Middle School across America, not just as an examination of the history of our appalling subjugation of the Native Americans which in itself could fill a whole semester but as a way to see that the official story handed out to everyone about most anything might very well have another, completely different story under the officially accepted one. A teaching moment for kids who are often never taught to think or question or analyze in school.

Gets me every time. I had the lyrics memorized over forty years ago and still sing it to myself when I'm in the mood for outrage. Buffy's other song to her people - Now That The Buffalo's Gone - is a little shorter, but just as powerful.

I thank you for this. I listened while I was 16 and am now 58. I was the top student and got kicked out of History in 1968 for arguing with the teacher over the Native American history I learned through Buffy. When I came back just a few years ago...since 1968 remember...my teacher saw me at a game. He ran up to me and the first words out of his mouth were "I am sorry Barb. You were right. How did you know?" I didn't even have to ask what he was talking about. Thank you Buffy. Thanks for posting

Hmmm... I think it's not so much under appreciated as over suppressed. Anyone who's ever listened to or ever even HEARD Buffy Saint Maria's lamentations over her people's genocide will be forced to acknowledge and appreciate the timeless beauty and truth of her lyrical content. And the drama of her delivery as well. Late 1960s composition, but certainly a message for TODAY'S America. It's never too late to do the Right Thing ! Remember !

@@Caribman9999 I agree with you wholeheartedly! Suppressed being the operative word! So much emotion in her voice! I have read Dee Brown's 'Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee' twice and it still manages to punch me in the gut! Anyone who reads this and is not affected by it is a boulder in Colorado!

@@sandrafisherhayes3219 Did you ever come across "Black Elk Speaks"? It's a historical and SPIRITUAL masterpiece. No, this is a great country in so many ways. Sure not everything is perfect and of course there have been great wrongs committed. But that has gone on since the beginning of human existence. Humans are far from perfect and human nature doesn't change. History repeats itself. Different names, different places.

I felt this song's story to my deepest core in the 1960's. I shared this with my US prairie family. They 'didn't hear', made no comment, not even to object, and never mentioned it - as if they'd never heard it.

HimJimRimDim All of the world's countries are garbage. The entire world is a big platter of poop. How is America so much better? Ten percent of the population is starving. America has the highest prison population in the entire country. Everyday I hear of police brutality and people getting in trouble for doing nothing. Free country? I think not. Yeah, the UK is a bit more fascist than the USA, but I don't understand how America gets away with installing military bases on every single country on Earth. How is that even legal? This country was founded on genocide, and it only had about 100 or so years to recover from the genocide. Germany isn't even allowed to have a decent military after their genocide and takeover attempt, yet America is already way ahead of Germany in the global dominaton game 'cuz they somehow managed to install military bases on every last corner of the Earth.

I was 19, stopped by to visit Joseph and Cass Scaglione in Tampa Florida, and they played me this song by Buffy St. Marie. She is a Native American folk singer, who also recorded many country songs and was an occasional Grand Ole Opry star. My aunt Velma Yearwood LOVED Buffy St. Marie. So here is a piece of "American History" that we were never taught in school. With our current love affair with greed and petroleum, this is even more true today than it was 55 years ago. God bless the Republicans. They will need it on Judgement day.

Started listening to Buffy Sainte-Marie when I was about 15 or 16 Her music really touched my heart and soul. Unfortunately she was "black-listed' by the US Gov't (along with Taj Mahal, another musician and the actress/dancer/singer Ertha Kitt, who were both too outspoken against the Vietnam War) because she was too outspoken on Native American rights. This did not stop her (or them) from becoming famous world round. We missed out on a lot of good music, acting, art because of it. I was so young at the time and never knew why after a while I no longer heard anything else about Buffy Sainte-Marie for a long time and it wasn't until the late 1990's that I discovered the reason. I am now 64 and all I can say is it is a damn shame that this Government that professes to represent the land of the free worked so actively to prevent certain people from free speech and all of us from hearing what they had to say

The wound, the damage continues. Children that were taken from their homes and forbidden from speaking their languages, couldn't relate with their families, didn't know how to parent their children because they lacked their elders advise and supervision. The cycle continues. Missions were places where enslavement occurred, where indigenous people were beaten and enslaved, raped and killed. Don't buy this romantic ideas of missions taming the savage. I'm still incensed. In the Amazon and in South America and Mexico, indigenous people are still losing their children because schools are far and it's "easier" if they stay at the schools. All the while, losing their language, their culture and developing a shame of who they are. And the history books continue to be rewritten, lands that we inhabit, we're unaware that those who first inhabited them were chased away or killed if they stood their ground. Let's not ever forget.

IN REMEMBRANCE- On the morning of November 29, 1864, Colonel John Chivington led a regiment of 700 volunteer militiamen into a sleeping Cheyenne and Arapaho village at Sand Creek, Colorado. Though their leader, Black Kettle, flew the American flag above his teepee , symbolizing passiveness and peace and he raised the white flag of surrender and instructed his people to stand under the post to prove to soldiers that they were unarmed and not hostile, Chivington and his men viciously murdered 200 to 600 people - mostly women, children , and the elderly - and only a handful of men who were not participating in the hunting expedition escaped.

History repeats itself in a miserable way. This powerful anthem is a dirge for a dying system that was built on lies. (Gen 3:1-5) Only through one's learning and developing according to the principles shared in our Creator's Bible (which reigns beyond the truths of any cultural norms), will we have the hopes of all life restored to a new heavens and a new earth original purposed by Jehovah because of his undeserved lovingkindness ... a creation that respected life in its essence and was created in the spirit of love.

(cont) My grandfathers made their living and glory off of the suffering of others and never blinked. My family still mostly honors "their service" without a conscience troubled moment. And you now who wish to have clean hands and push away any bothersome guilt, can just deny its happening on your watch. But it is and it has been for all these years, just excused by new lies and new fears; Unnecessary robotic wars unless you are the collateral damage, taking from the poor wherever, need a list?

This song was played in my home when I was in nursery school. I remember hearing specific lyrics and understanding them (e.g., "And where does it tell of the Liberty Bell as rang with a thud...") Unfortunately, I would not be exposed to these issues again until high school (and there only from peers) and college. Still, I can't help but think that this song influenced my outlook.

So heart felt, so relevant even today. She preaches the truth. Her words ring true, yet no one listens. No one cares. I hope one day her work resonates with the public. Maybe then, there will be some justice for those whose beautiful traditions who for years, lived in harmony with the environment, can live on. History leaves much out. Buffy St Marie does not. She deserves to be heard, forever and ever.

you don't need to be a "leftie" to appreciate a talent like her, or the message she sends, It wasn't one particular party that caused the tragedy

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN cited 'THE IROQOIS CONFEDERACY" as an example of a SUCCESSFUL UNION of SOVEREIGN STATES. Their oral "constitution" the GREAT LAW OF PEACE preceded ours by CENTURIES. It's based on STRENGTH THROUGH UNION and embodies Iroqois notions of FREE EXPRESSION and REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT. The TRUTH is always INSPIRING. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I came back to listen again. I see all these demeaning, hateful, and angry comments. I am puzzeled as to why everyone is so upset over the truth. I added a Response, but you might not care for it. It doesn't matter. I am embarrassed by many of the comments I see here. Thank you for your upload. My best to you, Moppet (Barbara)
