First, to answer your question (if it hasn’t been already): Joss wrote all the songs. Next, there’s so much character/plot movement in there one episode; I’m guessing you could have a similar shift without the music, but it feels to my so-not-a-writer brain that it would be difficult. Related, somewhere on this website is an interview with James Marsters who says: “I think when musicals are done well (and they’re not always done well) but when they are done well…when it works, the song happens at a point where the words aren’t enough anymore.” To my mind, this episode does a great (possibly an unequaled-on-television) job of demonstrating that.

I think all of us do it with music quite a bit. I remember singing lyrics to songs from the 90's now and realizing how many times they were talking about drugs and suicide. I hadn't noticed as a teen but now I notice due to having my kid with me and intentionally paying attn. You did a great job. You picked up stuff I def didn't the first time. Great job noticing Buffy seemed to be giving in to death again.

Great, very fun reaction! After all these years, I have come to view this as the best Buffy episode. Unlike when most other shows do a musical ep, this wasn't a one-off standalone. It actually works as an episode and moves all the plot lines along. AND it works as a damn good musical in its own right. It also feels as one complete piece, since Joss wrote everything himself: music, lyrics and dialogue. And I love that they didn't dub any voices. The spell made them all sing their innermost thoughts, but it didn't make them singers, per se. And even the non-singers in the cast went for it 150%. Everyone connected to the ep did great work. And it rewards 2nd and 3rd viewings. It's a very rich and layered episode.

I’m like you, I always listen to the melody and rythm before hearing the lyrics at the first time. That’s why it’s important to listen to the songs twice. In this episode, the lyrics are so important, every thing characters don’t allow to say is related in songs... This episode is so clever 😉 (sorry for my english).

The lyrics were all written by Joss Whedon and the music by Christopher Beck (a Canadian composer and conductor) along with Joss. The only person that didn't hear/retain the song is Buffy after Giles' song. We know that Anya and Xander did because Xander said "My eyes aren't beady" while walking with Giles. You may want to watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog if you enjoyed the music from this episode.

Yep, still is. From the Wiki article on James: "In 2010 James' music career continued when the band Ghost of the Robot reformed: they have since released the album B-Sider which is available on iTunes. Afterwards, in 2011, the album Murphy's Law was released, which is also available for download in iTunes. There are also multiple other EPs available on the iTunes Store. In 2023, Ghost of the Robot released the album Tin Man, which is available on Bandcamp. It includes the song "Don't Worry Son," which Marsters wrote while he was working on Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

At first I thought you hated it haha. Some reactors didn't like it that much and I understand it. Musicals are difficult, I don’t love any other musical... the idea of singing and dancing all the time is... hard lol. What I love about the episode are the lyrics important for each plot and even tho most actors aren't professional singers, the songs are fun, they delivered it well. The variation of different musical eras, like Anya and Xander 50's musicals, Tara kinda classic Disney princess... The mustard guy is David Fury and the parking ticket lady is Marti Noxon, writers of the show. They made fun of Joss for the idea of a musical, but ended up wanting to be part of it. Sad the actor who played the demon, Hinton Battle, died recently.

First time I watched this, I thought it was okay, but no more than that. However, it's grown on me over time to where it's now my absolute favorite episode of the series. You really do need to listen to understand the words of the songs. Unlike most musical episodes, this one is heavily plot and character driven. Thw songs drive the story forward in the various character arcs. The songs were written by Joss Whedon, BTW. The demon was played by three time Tony award winning actor, singer, and dancer Hinton Battle, who passed away earlier this year. (A true talent lost to us.)

The fact that you got to this point Jay without being spoiled for this episode is amazing in itself. A lot of shows that do musical episodes never get it right, and it offers very little to the plot. This however is the exception. Not only is this an innovative episode in term of plot and foreshadowing, it's a damn good 'musical'. The songs are really good and well structured, and just work so well in the episode. There is also great comedy in the episode with the lyrics. Of course the massive reveal for the group is Buffy telling them she was dragged out of Heaven, Spike already knew this of course, and then Dawn repeats to Buffy 'the hardest thing in this world is to live in it' the exact words Buffy said to Dawn in The Gift S5 Finale. Spike getting fed up with singing is very funny towards the end, but what an ending when Buffy follows him. It was brilliantly done, and now with Buffy and Spike kissing, the whole direction of the show takes a strange turn with some brilliant, but disturbing episodes to follow. Love the reaction again man. This really was a brilliant episode, Lorne from Angel would have loved this.

To your comment on Spike being aware of things more than others..My theory is that like Dru, William was also supernatural before he was turned. He was an empath. He has always been able to intuitively point out things about people that others haven't. He reads them well, and his demon uses that ability to it's advantage. Dru sensed that ability in William when he bumped into them, and then she found him in the alley to turn him. That's why he loves. Unfortunately, Dru...who was driven mad by Angelus and Darla, twisted her mind that her ideals of love are deviated. She, in turn, taught that to Spike. Them doing deviant things to each other makes it seem like love and foreplay. He is also very self aware, but his demon wants what he wants and will be extra about it. This show is the first Sci-fi/fantasy show to make an impactful musical. In fact, a lot of this show changed the way future sci-fi/fantasy shows and movies structured their shows and movies after. This is definitely a fan favorite.

Have the same thing with most singing, I hear voices as just another musical instrument, even if I hear and remember the words I can't parse them as sentences. I have other sensory processing issues so might be related to that. This episode and most musical generally do a pretty good job of keeping the lyrics enough like dialogue for me to muddle through though. I'm not sure if Xander did actually summon the demon, or if it was Xander choosing to take the fall to cover for Dawn. Xander isn't exactly great at hiding that he has a secret, so it seems unlike him to play complete ignorance about what's going on, but he's perfectly able to play the fool and have everyone believe it. On the flip side, Dawn didn't even touch the necklace until after the singing had started. It feels like a bit of a plot hole if you think about it too much tbh.

Following up on my other post: for what it’s worth I also have a bit of an issue with lyrics. I find that if I listen to song(s) repeatedly, the lyrics eventually sync in, possibly because my brain runs out of other things to focus on. My thing is names.. ppl say “hi, my name is…..BSHHHHHHHHHZZZZZZZZZ” like white noise and I immediately forget. The lyrics on this are what drove the whole thing making it so, so amazing! Clever, pointed lyrics drove the plot forward on every single characters’ life..and the songs were quite good. Xander just used a spell, just said an “invocation” with the talisman as the demon said, but the demon was fooled because Dawn was wearing the talisman Xander used in the shop as she shoplifted it, Xander didn’t need to take it. Yeah, we all gloss over all the deaths Xander caused..lol.. This episode is truly great. Not the very first musical episode on tv..apparently there was an “I Love Lucy” episode in the 1950’s that was..

I actually don't think it _was_ Xander who summoned the demon. It couldn't have been Dawn, since she didn't find the necklace in the magic shop until after the music had started, but I really think Xander would have shown some guilt or knowledge earlier if he really did it. He seemed just as confused, and as determined to research what was going on as the rest of them. But it _is_ in Xander's character to take the blame to protect Dawn, and then just not mention it afterward, like in The Zeppo. The assumption was that it had to be one of the Scoobies, but the necklace was just sitting in the Magic Box where anyone could walk in and use it, or it could have been left there by a customer who had already summoned the demon. There are clearly plenty of people in Sunnydale into magic. I think it was most likely another plot by the nerd trio, but it would have taken too much time from the episode to reveal that.

A great reaction, don't worry about it being difficult to react to. It really is a different type of episode and (hopefully) always comes as a surprise to the reactor, so you can't really prepare for it. You made the right call trying to take it all in and not miss even more by trying to be more reactive on camera. I'm sure this was already said in the comments, but this episode needs and endures multiple re-watches for many reasons, not the least because of the lyrical content as you almost always pick up something new on each re-watch. And subtitles really do help, in my opinion. My focus also always goes first to the music, and I tend to miss many of the lyrics when it comes to listening to music in general, so it's not just you. The cast did really well with some having more singing experience than others. It also makes it more realistic because these are just normal people singing under a spell, so why would they all magically sound like Whitney Houston. Looking forward to your next reaction, with all of these new revelations out in the open among the Scoobies.

I think it is very fair to not give this episode a grade. This episode and The Body are so different than any other episode. Both of those explore and challenge the expectations of the audience and what is defined for not only this show but entertainment constitutes. Just by saying you enjoyed Once More with Feeling is all that is needed The separation Od this from other Buffy episodes is acknowledged by the opening. Different everything…. Music, letter style, pictures of actors… title Od episode. This is a one and sone start so graded is foolish. The best grade given is that this is the Gold Standard did every show that attempts a musical episode. When any attempts to do a musical start with the producers/ writers/ actors watching this, that is a grade of A+ .

If you like to hear James Marsters sing you can Google his band Ghost of the Robot. Some not-that-fun-facts: the guy singing about mustard was long time "Buffy" writer David Fury, the woman trying to get out of a ticket was producer Marti Noxon. Most of the cast embraced the project except for Alison Hannigan ("I think this line is mostly filler...") Nicholas Brendon was reluctant at first but ultimately welcomed the challenge Michelle Trachtenberg requested minimal singing to focus more on her dancing ability

The Xander revelation kind of knocked this episode down on the list of my favourites, after i really thought about it. It's still right up there as a great episode. However, that one part, doesn;t make sense. The episode covers at least 2 days, maybe 3. After the first day, we know people have died, Giles mentions he only got to see 1 body. So let's say its 3-5 a day, that means this spell/summon killed 6-15 people as a rough guess. You could kind of let the first days slide, as he wasn't aware of the connection to what he did... but as soon as they get a good idea, and he knows people have died... he still acts like he has no idea.... i just didn't buy it.... he summoned a singing/dancing demon..... sudden;y everyone is singing and dancing, and dying from it, and he doesn't say anything.... Just always bugged me, since i realized it... and i just don't understand why they decided to make him responsible, it could have been Dawn, and it would have been fine, could have just been a random person.... so many better options. Still in my top 5 episodes though, as i loved the fact they all sang themselves, and didn't get professionals to dub in. Loved how the songs actually meant something, and weren't just random songs. So many characters and story lines got advanced in this episode as well. Just had that one down point in regards to Xander.
@Talisguy

A popular fan theory is that Xander didn't summon the demon and just threw himself under the bus for Dawn's sake. That would still leave the question of who summoned the demon - we see Dawn steal the talisman after the spell has started, so it couldn't have been her - but if you'd prefer not knowing to the idea that Xander did it, it's there.
@mattthrower6381
@mattthrower6381 4 месяца назад
@@Talisguy not really, as the group seem to believe Dawn didn't do it. I just think it was tacted on as they couldn't come up with a better idea or it comes across as they forgot that part of the episode, and just picked one of them at random. Xander should know better as well, when it comes to magic and spells, he lectures others on it in earlier seasons after his own mess up in season 2. He lectures people after this. He is never held accountable for the fact he cost potentially 5+ people to die. it's never really mentioned again. For me, just a black mark on what is essentially a fantastic and well done episode.

It takes alot of effort to really hear the meaning the first time I hear a song. Unless it’s super catchy and the message is in the refrain, I just miss it completely. We’re not weird, just special! 😂😂😂 Marsters’ song is more my style of music as well. His song was my favorite the first time I watched the episode. They were all decent singers with Amber Benson, Tony Head and James Marsters being the stand outs. Xander was the worst singer in my opinion, but he gave it his all so it works. The more you rewatch this one, the better it gets. Some of the songs are a bit awkward the way they are arranged, but they grow on you. Joss Whedon took a six month break during summer and the first part of S6 to teach himself basic piano and write these songs. RIP Hinton Battle (the bad guy [Sweet's] actor). Died January 2024. It wasn't different for there to be a "previously on segment" when the episodes were on TV, but you don't see them on any Buffy DVD'S or Streaming except this one. Probably because there is no teaser and it just moves right to the theme song, so they use a previously on for the teaser. Sad to hear someone spoiled you. Although, I do find it funny that people don't get it until Buffy starts singing when there is a credit stating songs and lyrics by Joss Whedon. People are usually too busy wondering what the oddness and differences from other episodes mean, though, to see it. Tara: "I'm under Your spell" And it's not a good thing. Every moment of hand-holding, kissing etc is now sexual assualt and the sex after the spell is rape. That's why the reprise of the song works as it does being Tara's realization of all that truth behind the first _Under Yor Spell_ song, as well. If the whole musical was Willow's fault, as Jay assumed, Willow would be in worse shape than she is at episode's end. One day I'm gonna be there for the reaction viewer who catches Marti Noxon's character trying to get out of the ticket by bribing the cop with a free show. One day it could happen. I hope I'm there to see it. I believe Spike was immune until Buffy showed up and he knew with her around he wouldn't stay that way, so he tried to get her to leave. Too little too late. Actions like fighting and running away turning into interpetive dancing was clever. I absolutely love the look on Willow's face when she finds out Buffy was in heaven. After convincing everyone else of their reservations, needing Buffy to thank her for the resurection, and chastizing Giles when he tries to tell her off for it, I consider 16:25 a deserved reaction from Willow, and I love it. Xander let all this happen knowing Dawn was about to be a child bride, even going as far as to ask in song, "What if Buffy can't defeat it?" And only admitted he cast the spell (he should know better by now. He's been a Scooby for five years, been told by Giles not to say Latin around the books [which he should know means to not do so unless you have some idea of what your doing - which he doesn't where magic is concerned], and has told off Willow for doing magic in ways she shouldn't) once he knew they knew it wasn't Dawn. I also don't buy into the protecting Dawn theory people have because after Anya chastises him, his excuse hits into why he did it: "I just wanted to make sure [he and Anya'd] work out," aka he has cold feet about their upcoming wedding; whereas Dawn is just continuing her kleptomania, and that's why she has the medallion. There is also a spoiler that debunks the theory of Xander covering for Dawn. Xander is the reason anyone who dies, dies in this episode. I don't even blame Sweet. He's just doing what he's required to do when summoned. Even the writers admit Sweet is still alive at the end because he isn't the villain. The character's own issues are.

Very LONG comment I dont typically read this much lol About Willow Yes she made Tara forget but they were STILL a couple so I don’t consider it rape. However it’s still inappropriate behavior As far as Giles scolding Willow, Willow THOUGHT Buffy was in Hell to be fair. Not heaven. Sure she couldnt prove it but I’ll say she should’ve atleast did a spell to check where Buffy was. Yes I know it’s still magic but it be the ONE time Willow would use magic properly. Giles also didn’t need to name call her. He was a bit mean. Yes resurrect is against natural order but notice Tara didnt say anything about it. Cus Buffy’s death was NOT natural like Joyce was. That’s why Dawn trying to resurrect Joyce didn’t work. Her death was natural. Tara didn’t support it with Joyce but she was fine with Buffy. At the end of the day, it’s still resurrection..

@@lessismore8533 MAJOR SEASON SIX AND SEVEN SPOILERS I trypically write and respond with long comments, so sorry. Being in a relationship does not give a partner in a relationship permission whenever they wish, as you imply. Everyone has a right to say no, and Willow took that ability away from Tara. The United States (specifically California where the Scoobies are) isn't a country where relationships consider significant others property. Willow did the equivelant to the situation of a date rape drug except she used magic instead of drugs. So sorry, I cannot agree. Willow assuming Buffy is in heaven is hardlythe point or a good excuse. Willow has been addicted to magic since giving Angel his soul back. From ignoring people's warnings of being careful, to Willow thinking Buffy is in heaven, and convincing everyone else that means resurection is a necessity is just a part of the problem behind Willow's addiction. " Yes I know it’s still magic but it be the ONE time Willow would use magic properly." That quote proves my point if you meant properly, but if you meant impropery, it is hardly the only time Willow has misused it. I've already mentioned ignoring warnings, but also episodes like: _Faith, Hope and Trick_ (show one of many moments she gnores Giles warnings and showing that even then she was willing to do magic for little things she shouldn't be, as Tara states), _Dopplegangland_ (ignoring warnings led to Willow doing the spell with Anya and doing spell like the pencil that aren't needed to be done, as Tara states in S6) _Fear Itself_ (showing Willow fears all this and ignores her own fear in favor of a growing addiction), _Wild at Heart_ (it doesn't matter that she stopped herself from taking Oz's love away she still moves a step closer to S6's Dark Willow) _Something Blue,_ (using magic due to an inability to listen to her friends and deal in a healthy way) _Primeval_ (not a spell that is unwarrented, but shows Willow power), _Triangle,_ (Willow abusing magic and the fact that Anya was left in charge on top of that) _Tough Love_ (once again not listening to more urgent warnings), _Bargaining Part 1_ & _2_ (the resurecting Buffy storyline), _After Life_ (the first fallout of resurrecting Buffy), _All the Way_ (Willow rapes Tara by erasing her memories before sleeping with her). So whichever way you meant the quote, it doesn't work, for me. Willow has been on a slow decline with magic and personality ever since the power of restoring Angel's soul, which will culminate two episodes from this one. That episode doesn't just happen overnight. Resurrecting Buffy and taking on Glory were point of no return moment in her magic addiction that have always been there. Willow ignoring the fact that Buffy was in heaven is just a sliver of that addiction issue. At the end of the day it's resurection and that is the problem. That is why they have a hitchicker, Buffy being depressed, and its the key reason behind The First doing what it does in S7 (as Biloxi's Eye says to Anya) as resulting issues. It's never meant to be done and will always have consequences. Magic always does, but magic on that scale definitly will, even if Osiris had approved.

This is one my favorite episodes, but I consider it a guilty pleasure. The singing is serviceable at best, and there are some definite cringey moments, which is to be expected in an episode so fantastical I suppose. It’s a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts IMO. That being said, “I’ll Never Tell” is an absolute masterpiece of musical theatre composition. I also applaud James Marster’s portrayal of exasperation when he starts singing against his will.

You cut a little too much, it is nice to see reactions about lines and feelings from the songs. But you can rewatch it if you dont seize all the things it is normal. A CD exists an album tilted Once more with feelings with all the songs of the episode and a few tracks

@@codypendragons I found the CD in a bin at a shop in Seattle in the mid-2000s. It was an awesome find! I can still "sing" all the songs (I'm terrible). But, yeah. He cut out a lot of the "good stuff" that highlights some of the big scenes. The one I like to "judge" a reactor on is if he/she keeps the fire engine drive by in the edit. It is a cool shot and must have been tricky to time. Another bit is the "I died twice" line. Most of the time, reactors who included these also kept the other pieces that I also want to see.

@@samsonau8205 I can to, they're good song's, and the cd thing. I was kidding mostly, it just made me think about how pretty soon(if not already) people won't know what those are.
