"Why the dolls?" - Because dolls are always creepy 😄 Drusilla is in my top three female characters of "Buffy". Maybe she will grow on you.

Uncle Tom is from the 19th century novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Uncle Tom was a slave who helped the slaveowner oppress the other slaves in exchange for extra privileges - basically a traitor, a collaborator. Spike was calling Angel a pro-human collaborator.

One of the most iconic scenes in the whole show when Spike ( one of the greatest characters in The Buffyverse ) rolls into town and drives right over the Sunnydale sign. School Hard is one of the best episodes of S2. James Marsters was so impressive in the role, he became an instant fan favourite. Some great writing in this episode, when Xander goes to get Buffy's bag and pulls out a yoyo, tampon and then stake, this shows Buffy from child, to teenager, to adolescent showing how she is growing up. Great too when Joyce clobbers Spike on the head with the axe. All in all a great episode for early S2 with Angel/Spike/Drusilla who have a shared history through the centuries to add to the arc of the Buffyverse as a whole.

"School Hard", a wordplay and a homage to the first "Die Hard" film, is where Buffyverse fans feel the show kicks into high gear. James Marsters and Juliet Landau (daughter of Oscar winner Martin Landau and Barbara Bain) are basically Vampire Sid and Nancy as Spike and Drusilla. They, particularly Spike, were brought on as the Big Bad since the actor playing The Anointed (Annoying) One was entering puberty, but things gets REALLY twisted later in the season. Tony Head (Giles) coached Marsters with the British accent.
@jjlonsdale5971
@jjlonsdale5971 10 месяцев назад
"Tony Head (Giles) coached Marsters with the British accent." Yes. Not for this episode, tho! 😂 No shade, it's not James Marsters' fault. As I'm sure you know, the character was originally supposed to be a cowboy, and the English/Cockney/something that's happening here was a pretty last-minute change.
@Madbandit77

@@jjlonsdale5971 The cockney accent works because the cowboy accent in a future season is too hysterical.

Already saw your short reaction to Spike's entrance, so I KNOW this is gonna be good! An evergreen fandom argument is, When does the show really "get good"? Most people say halfway through season 2, or want to fight for season 1, but we all know the real answer. This show gets next level when Spike shows up 😁😁😁😁

Disliking Drucila is not going to be a popular opinion. 😅. Also, I feel like this is a big turning point for the show where The Master and Anointed One had sort of this old school traditional vampire feel with all their rituals and traditions, where Spike is just more about chaos and fun.

The child actor also had a growth spurt, and vampires aren't supposed to age. They had to choose camera angles that didn't give away the height difference, or film him sitting.

LOL at catching the Toy Story 2 parallel. Joss does wind up repeating some of his bits (it's amazing at all of the Buffy stuff that got reused in Firefly in various ways). Uncle Tom (from the novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin") is an older expression for a black man that has sold out his race by his dealings with white men. Basically just a colloquial name for a turncoat.

A Slayer isn't necessarily called at 16. In fact, I think I remember them saying (in season 1) that Buffy was a late bloomer in that regard. I think it normally happens a little earlier.

Spike calling Angel an Uncle Tom is a reference to a novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, from shortly before the American Civil War. The modern notion of an Uncle Tom refers to a black person (a slave in the novel) overly subservient and groveling to white oppressors. Its usage in the context of this Buffy episode is...a little problematic. When I was living in Berlin (don't know if this is still the case), there was a metro station named Onkel Tom's Hütte. I found that super weird and always wondered how many locals understood what it meant.
@jjlonsdale5971
@jjlonsdale5971 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, there are a few "of their time" moments like that, reminding me that yes, the 90s was problematic. Spike, us white people don't get to call anyone an Uncle Tom, mkay? And while we're on the subject, you can't touch your black victims' hair. I understand you have to kill them, but maybe lay off with the microaggressions while you're doing it, right? Everyone deserves respect, even when they're being drained. (Lol, that's all a joke. Thought I might need to clarify, if you're possibly German. That's a joke too. 😉 And that train station in Berlin sounds bizarre!)
@sirmoonslosthismind
@sirmoonslosthismind 10 месяцев назад
how exactly is it "problematic" for a villain not to care if his language offends?
@HagenvonTroneg
@HagenvonTroneg 10 месяцев назад
@@sirmoonslosthismind It's not problematic from the standpoint of Spike as a villain. It's problematic from the standpoint of the writers choosing this very specific reference that doesn't really make sense in context given that vampires feed on humans and has explicit racial associations. It's just a very weird decision.
@jjlonsdale5971
@jjlonsdale5971 10 месяцев назад
@@sirmoonslosthismind So, there's a difference between a character saying a slur, and the show itself condoning the slur, you know? Obviously Spike can be racist if he wants to, he is bad guy, but typically the writing/setting/plot/context of a show makes it clear that the show itself doesn't agree. In this instance, I really don't think the writer's room understood that white people shouldn't call other white people an "Uncle Tom," even if they're a vampire and they want to call another vampire a race traitor. It's one of those things that we didn't think was icky in the 90s (I was there), but now we do.
@Madbandit77
@Madbandit77 10 месяцев назад
@@jjlonsdale5971 I don't think it's icky now as it was naive then. Vampires don't have the persecuted minority status as black people. So the Uncle Tom comes off as awkward. I bet JW wrote that, and knowing him, he didn't really think about it.

Please don’t take this as criticism I love your reactions. But I find myself constantly amazed at how lenient you (and other reactors) are on Buffy’s mom, and the “adult” figures in Buffy’s life. Meaning, it happens a lot. Even though we are only at 2x3. Just the fact that you have had to make that conscious choice, means it’s happening way too often. Sorry. I just find it interesting.
@Stuman57
@Stuman57 10 месяцев назад
So, while Buffy’s mom is going to sleep better knowing she doesn’t have to worry, or really give a crap about her daughter. She’s also admitting to Buffy that she think everything she does is stupid, and a waste of time. All of that, on top of knowing that Joyce, her own mother, even though she knows, doesn’t even care that she’s a bad girl, a trouble maker. No reason?! No concern? No cause, no treatment! Is it just me???
