Generally Midges (also known as flying teeth!) dont fly when the wind is 5 knots or higher, which is a lot of the time. Smidge works really well as does Avon Skin So Soft.
Yes it’s only those calmer times they are really bad! They really can ruin a summers evening. We got bitten to death on a overnight beach camp one summer 😳😬 I haven’t found much works for me and my youngest, other than covering up. We are clearly far too tasty to them 🤣
It seems I'm rather unappetising to biting bugs in general. On trips to Belize and West Africa as well as the highlands and rural Norway I tended to be ignored whilst others with me were almost being eaten alive. I watched a documentary about the midges where they did a lot of tests on the theory behind the blood type theory but they went a bit further and found that it was actually down to a flag in your DNA. If I remember correctly if it was turned on then you were 'tasty' and got bitten a lot but if it was inactive then you were avoided.
That’s so interesting! I had heard something about blood type but not looked into it more. So they think it’s more DNA based…. So interesting will have to look that up. There’s got to be something as to why some people are lucky like your self and don’t get bitten (or bitten way less) and some people like me are bitten to death 🤣
@philipmclaughlin9636 They really do! Although these ones hurt less than the times I got bitten in England. And didn’t swell up as much either. So I have been thankful for that!
He he! Yes why!? Although….larval midges munch away at decaying plant matter in the soil and adult midges are important in the diet of many species of birds and bats…. So they do as everything I guess play a part in our ecosystem. But boy… they are annoying! 🤣
Midges are more prevalent in some areas than others. It also seems to differ year from year. One year we didn’t suffer too bad but then the following year was really bad!
@@hozzer68I have but ironically that was back in England never had a clegg bite since moving here…. Hope to never have one again my ankle swelled right up! 🥴
