Update: Almost 1 year into this build out and everything is still going strong. What I may do differently: 1. with temperature and humidity changes the floor lining lifted a little on the side panels so I reinforced with a staple gun - might as well do this now before it’s a pain to get to the edges in all the areas. 2. Where I fastened the first section(support platform) of wood to the car (where the battery lives) after the fact, I would make this easier to remove for easier access to the battery and easier removal, this was annoying when lifting and cleaning out the fan - less screws and held up/ supported by wood On the base would be my go-to next time. But if you don’t care about removing the screws, go for it!

Nicely done. As a first responder I would like to point out that the "orange tubing" (didn't see it but that is generally how it is colored) is most likely the high voltage line. If that is hit you either get electrocuted and/or start a fire. Just like Nikki said be careful when drilling. Keep in mind that trained firefighters can't always tell where these lines are in case of a crash and extrication tools are needed. My recommendation is to ask someone that knows your vehicle before drilling anywhere in the car. In a regular ICE vehicle you have "only" the wiring harnesses to worry about, worst case your tail lights don't work or you have other dashboard gremlins show up. With a hybrid or electric vehicle the worst case is death, followed by burning down the car or the house and garage that are housing it when you are doing the work (that has all happened, more than once). Please listen to her and be careful. Then enjoy your new camper (not to be confused with "Camper", obviously). Also, great garage. Whoever owns it is lucky. Tools, gym equipment, a golf cart with custom seats, motorcycle, sweet!

It is better to buy the right auto. The right vehicle will be more versatile since you can have back seats or flat in about one minute. She may have an issue with the insurance company in the event of an accident.

I love how your mind works in terms of how you take an approach to life and living. I also am impressed with your creativity and putting your plan into action. I am planning a rather ambitious road trip in the month of June to see and explore the Utah Mighty Five national parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands) as well as checking out several slot canyons in Escalante. To help me plan out my itinerary, I wanted to get a glimpse of what trekking through these slot canyons would be like to make sure I could do them, and that's when I first came across one of your videos. From there, I watched a couple more of your videos where you explained how and why you decided to ditch the traditional lifestyle of the way most Americans live out their lives and moved into your Prius. My mother had a Prius, so I know how quiet and smooth they are as well as how compact they are. So before checking out those videos, I just assumed that you slept in the front passenger seat with your seatback as far down as it would go or stretch across the backseats in order to sleep. And then I saw that you were able to lie flat completely with more than enough room for you and Camper too! Where's the back seat? So that led me to try and find your very first videos showing us your decision to remove the back seats and and constructing a custom designed multi-functional platform to act as a both a support for your bed as well as a cool cover for your hidden storage compartments for your necessary gear. Absolutely brilliant idea! I never would have thought of that in a million years. Great job, Nikki. A few questions, if you don't mind. 1) Did you intend to remove the back seats and completely transform your car's interior before you bought it? 2) Did you put your car seats inside of large trash bags and store them in your helpful cousin's garage up in the rafters to be retrieved and reinstalled back in the car when you decide it's time to get a new car? 3) Do you only have coolers in your car, or do you also have a small refrigerator in one of your storage compartments? You have changed my definition and perspective of what constitutes homelessness or being homeless. I used to think not having a stationary residence meant that you're homeless. I now see that the concept of home is much more broad than being able to list an address. Unlike many others that have to live in their cars, you are nomadic by choice. That singular distinction makes all the difference in the world. I'm sure there are those that totally disagree with your lifestyle choice, and I do see that it's definitely not for everyone. I see that you have a plan, you are smart and careful, you take all the necessary steps to protect yourself (car insurance and maintenance, health insurance, pet insurance, maintaining health and staying fit, staying connected with the outside world, paying taxes), and being gainfully employed. I'm sure you have roadside assistance too just in case. Life isn't without risks. It kind of comes with the territory. Is living a life inside of a car riskier than behind four walls and a roof? Who's to say? Maybe? But I really like how you made the decision to live your life by your own rules. Only outlaws do that. I guess that makes you somewhat of a life outlaw. No punching a timeclock. No sitting behind a desk for 8hrs a day and 40hrs per week and watching your ass slowly becoming as big as the continental divide and only getting 2 weeks of vacation a year, if you're lucky to even have that particular benefit. You make your own rules. You go where you want and for how long you want. You camp where you want and do what you want. You decide when to call it a day and when to wake up. No alarms. No meetings. No conformity. It sounds amazing to me, and admittedly, also a bit intimidating. You're definitely a lot braver than me. I just hit the subscribe and like buttons and can't wait to check out the other videos you've uploaded so far. I don't usually bother subscribing to RU-vidr channels, but I'm making an exception in your case. I look forward to vicariously living through your real life everyday adventures. Please keep it up. I think you've hit a winning formula to life and living it to the fullest. P.S. - I don't expect a reply or comment from you because you are a busy person, plus you have absolutely no idea who the hell I am. But I do hope that you find the time to read my comment.

@DanDelventhal
@DanDelventhal 3 года назад
@@zedmak word on the net was 2000lbs capable, so I bought some aluminum 10 and 12 x 6.5's, weighing 700lbs, and haul 800 to 1600 lbs in them. The gas mileage drops quite a bit to 22 to 30 mph, but it's still low emission and convenient. At 1800 lbs total, on highway, with many hills, I noticed the guage told me 28mph but was inaccurate, actually just 22 mph! A bit disappointing, but my ole '08 Prius with 200k miles on it did the 1400 mile non-stop haul without a hiccup!

Guys... hidden deep in the video, there's advice for anyone who might want to date her! Your build is fantastic! Wish I was this smart with my insulation. For anyone that might be using this for inspiration, I did a Prius build too and would add a couple variations to consider. I refused to drill anywhere near the battery, but on mine (2013) there were very solid mounting points that let the backseat fold up and down. With the seat removed, they were a great anchor point to bolt a plank that spanned the width of the car just like she did, using a 10mm socket wrench. You also mentioned shelves which extended the platform to the back of the front seats (very nice for sleeping if you're tall). I did that by putting rails from a metal modular closet shelf on the front of the platform, the ones that just have attachments which hook into slots drilled in them. The shelf supports which fit those can hold a platform extension, are cheap, light, and durable, but most importantly you can easily remove them and stow them anywhere in the car. You mentioned hinges or L brackets, and they're more solid but not as flexible with space.

@@NikkiDelventhal Hidden advice duly noted, and noticed; too bad I'm too many years beyond her age! Nikki, it looks like you're new to this RU-vid income stream game. May I suggest you arrange to bump into Bob Wells on his CheapRVliving channel (hangs around AZ and sometimes FL a lot this time of year). Not that you'd like his lifestyle, but an interview showing your Prius could bring you many more subscribers. It seemed to work for Jarrod Tocci as he just passed the 100k subscriber mark. Bob did show a Prius about 9 months ago with a tent gizmo attachment you might like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--zXNWf2vtz0.html

Totally great advice, just like how you do your thing... best to ask and/or just listen. I went super budget on my 2013 only removing the back seat backs and making a custom backboard that folded into three sections and used a webbing with clip to attach the head/torso section around the passenger side head rest height adjustment metal tubing. Used plywood, scrim, some fabric adhesive, some staples, similar hinge material and I think the material is a like a tan speaker carpet marine upholstery. Man, did like back in 2015 and I forget exactly offhand. I'll have to check my eBay and amazon purchase history, though now thinking I searched online for some deals at fabric stores and ordered... so probably have the info in my email somewhere too. Used a 4" memory foam, cut the same way though in 2" wide sections I laid side by side and was planning to adhere though wound up just wrapping with one of those blankets from Mexico or the islands. I only made a half width bed at first. Then my 2" thermarest pad and my sleeping bag, later investing in a GenIII extreme cold weather sleeping bag system. Used paracord tied around and strung between the handles, visors and tucked under center glasses/lights edge with binder clips as like the hangers to clip onto the white UPF rated polylycra material that originally I was planning to sew a cocoon sleeping bag inner liner or just thin liner sleeping bag... and decided to use the material for curtains. Invested in the custom front and hatch window shade, I forget if weathertech or not. Seems one was and one was custom. Weathertech floor liners for certain... those were my first investment actually. I just left the plastic that came with the car new underneath and tucked under the console lips. I also invested in a Dometic CFX-CVR40 Insulated Protective Cover for CFX-40US frig/freezer and that is an awesome device. Very luxurious. Can freeze food and have a fridge with no need for ice after that point. Kept the artic ice cooler packs just in case... though thinking after researching more that frozen water in a square or rectangular bottle is all you need for a backup and more energy efficient cooling thing and is more cost effective. To save on the ice expense, I used to just freeze the water bottles and packs when I had a place to. Latest project is the PCV valve relocation, OCC and maintenance tasks, i.e. intake, EGR and PCV circuit cleaning. Amazing how little maintenance these cars require. 225,000 miles and still going strong. Loving the lift idea. I also want to make a custom front bumper guard with shutters and temp sensors for the colder weather to close the intakes to the engine and inverter radiators. Maybe and engine block warmer might not be bad for in the winter also. Thinking can lower drag on the underside too with improve skirting that is even more lower drag. At one time wanted bullet style rear view mirrors with camera's installed with the screens on my dash. I actually have most the materials to do these later projects... just haven't had the need since I don't camp or stay in hardly anymore. The lift would be handy for hauling stuff though. Amazing what can fit in the prius. I also want to make a tail cargo container to lower the drag that swings open on the passenger side so can use as a kitchen and also pop up a tent awning at the least like tailgating I guess. More-so wanted to add storage while lowering drag to improve performance or at least offset the increased load. Planning to do similar with the Dodge Ram with a Mike Basich cap design without the skid and adding linear actuators to lift the cap. Planning more for a radio direction finding patrol truck since that's my main passion now being a victim of a bunch of stuff I won't get into. Randomly watched the lift video and now this one. Wow! You way girl pack yours. I way guy pack mine though more like a pickup truck now days when I'm out on the road rescuing made in the US items and material for projects. Like the material you used and am thinking that might make a great liner. Just need something smoother on top to aid in sliding when is just me so doesn't bunch up. Maybe a layer or two of plastic or contractor bags and some cardboard is all required. Humorous is thinking about fitting two people, I did the same and invested in a roof rack. Decided to go with the Yakima Jetstream since was rated at a higher load capacity than the Thule. Invested in that new with a little surfing on eBay and the net to find the best prices. Have a Thule container however, the cheapest slimmer aerodynamic one from Sears at the time that I wound up finding on Craigslist for like $100. Soaring Bob is correct and I'm thinking there are probably more high volume channels to connect and canvas with if that's your interest. Haven't really done the market and advertising research, so really not certain. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Looks like good times. Wishing you a bountiful, healthy, safe and happy holiday season and beyond.

Just want to touch on a couple things that might be of interest! If you're any good with a sewing machine, you might want to look into sewing a bug screen with magnetic sides that can cling around the open hatch. I lived out of my Prius for a while, and the one caveat was that I would have loved to open the back end on a cool summer night if not for Ohio's mosquitos.

@tpasco1995

Nikki Delventhal There are a couple choices. The obvious one is to turn the dome lights to "OFF" rather than "DOOR" when you plan to have the hatch open (don't forget the switch on the driver's side in the hatch). The convoluted one is to pull the headliner down and run a master kill switch to both dome lights that can be reached from one spot.

Glad you added a disclaimer about safety gear, I was cringing as I watched you use some of those tools lol Never thought about living/camping in a Prius, but some interesting ideas. Thanks!!

My old '74 Oldsmobile Omega, was a hatchback, and the back seat would flip down/forward. There was a lot of room, plus it had rear air shocks, if you carried heavier loads.

Damn. All in a Prius. I thought it was gonna look bad. Cool how it’s sectional.

Some very precise wood cuts and measurements. First-class tools always helps but maybe a brother or someone trained her how to use them. Also she has had good scientific-technical educating (not sure to address this to readers or our star queen). Maybe a tomboy growing up. Interesting, if I have seen these type buildout stories before. First-class work. If only I needed to know. Thanks Nikki.

Thank you!!!! This means so much as I researched so much and worked so hard in this! Most definitely a tom boy growing up and always loved doing art and crafty diy projects!:-) Luckily I could visit my cousins up North and borrow their tool shed and lake(for swimming between steps hehe) for the week!:-) Cause lets be real those aren’t fitting in the Prius 😂
