We recently checked out the Rotorway A600 Helicopter; a quick build experimental helicopter that you can build in your garage. Here is owner of that Helicopter David giving us a second look and going more in-depth on the specs of his newly built helicopter.
The A600 helicopter uses a converted custom built engines with power output of 168 HP. This is the turbocharged version. If you go for a standard A600 kit, then you’ll be down to 147 HP. The helicopter will climb at a respectable 1000 feet per minute and you are cruising between 80 to 100 miles per hour. A brand new A600 Talon kit which includes the engine runs for about $160,000
Engine: RH600T 168HP
Capacity: 2
Useful load: 620 lbs
Range: 200 miles
Speed: 90 - 100 mph
Price: $160,000

That we me you’re talking about. At the time of filming it was below freezing about 21F. All video segments were shot in one go and this was the last one. We were freezing. I could barely move my arms. I’m particular sensitive to dry air and also I was coughing because of my meds - it’s a common side effect. I wasn’t contagious. :)

Why not buy a turn-key Italian factory built, modern, carbon fiber, Dynali H3 instead, with a better engine $135,000? At 5:01 you operate the yaw pedals with your fingers but when I test flew a 162F I found the pedals very heavy compared to the R22 that I was rated on. It was connected with Bawden cables if I remember correctly and I had previously seen that on power boats which were also heavy. Is this aircraft different or was I just flying a bad example perhaps? (I just figured out that I'm asking the wrong person but I'll leave it here for discussion)

It's quite counter intuitive that when unpowered and working as a wind turbine in freefall that the rotor produces a lot of lift so you can fly it. I guess it makes sense as each blade gliding down and forward like a plane wing.
@superskullmaster
@superskullmaster 4 года назад
Dan Frederiksen the rotor produces almost no lift while in autorotation (1500fpm at 70mph is a horrible glide ratio). The purpose of the negative pitch is to keep the rotors spinning, while the slowing of the rotors by increasing pitch near the bottom gives you the lift you need to not become a pile of burnt metal and flesh.
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 4 года назад
@@superskullmaster 7.6m/s drop may not be the greatest hover but it's vastly better than free fall. So I think you are wrong. The rotor tip speed is probably a good portion of the speed of sound so the effective glide ratio might be better than a cessna.
@watashiandroid8314
@watashiandroid8314 4 года назад
Dan Frederiksen interesting thought. Makes me wonder what the average rotor airspeed is since it's almost zero at the hub and very fast at the end.
@davidchow9528
@davidchow9528 4 года назад
Rotors are 25ft in diameter. 8.5 revs per second. Tip speed is around 460mph.
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 4 года назад
@@davidchow9528 fits well with my intuition. same for nose props. If we count that for glide ratio, it's better than 20:1 although in autorot it might be a bit slower.

mark evans fronted the show,great guy,however,david and jonathon bull at southern helicopters actually led the build from start to completion,mark and"pete mate"made it entertaining and it was.truth is,500hrs build time,is way off actual.ive had my ancient exec 90 almost 4yrs and every resto,maintenance issue ends up with many hours,blood loss,aching muscles and lighter pockets.imagine trying to take apart a watch,thru the top of a goldfish bowl and you are close.very clever people at rotorway,Air crash investigation used to have 2 paramators to look for,Pilot error,or manufacturing fault,ok,amongst others,however,constructor error is the new kid on the block and i get it.so tempting to cut corners and at the same time"its your ass"when it goes wrong.I highly recommend a build,or resto project,but stay real.having said all this,i still love my rotorway.good luck out there.

true, although a gyrocopter is much safer since you're already in constant autorotation so nothing changes, you just descend like normal. The tricky part about a helicopter is entering autorotation and maintaining it.
