Just a tip for new Live users. At 31:39 after freezing the track, you can create a audio track (Ctrl t in windows ) and then Ctrl and left click drag the frozen track to the new audio track. It essentially does exactly what James did here but it keeps the midi track in place, in case you want to edit something in it later. Make sure you mute the midi track after because it will still play, in Live 10 at least. I suggest you do it James' way because it's better to commit to an idea then have a "way out" in my opinion. Just letting you all know the option to go back is there in case you really need it.

This comment is 3 years old and nothing has changed. Why is there no keyboard shortcut for bounce onto a new track and mute the old one? I know there is a Max4Live device that does it but it should be an internal feature of the DAW...

I use Logic but found this hugely inspiring, I liked his theory on house beats, at first The bassline at first I thought was a tiny weak, but then understood the off tempo/offbeat groove, a dirty/filthy tune, with similer basslines like that, we used to call it back in the day. It grew on me quickly, In fact, I love it, its a tech house tune, after all, he's making. Loved the other things like the synth reverse etc. Anyway, this guy knows his shit and loved his tunes from my raving days. That studio is perfect, Imaging having that shit in your spare room. It doesn't matter what DAW you use, Everybody will prefer one daw over another, It doesn't matter as long as you can make good music. Great tutorial man.

Can anyone explain what he did with the kick?
@grahamnicholson4803
@grahamnicholson4803 6 лет назад
I'd love to know as well. It looks like he used reverb on a filtered kick to create a rumble, but I can't really tell myself. Edit: After looking at the video a few more times and doing some reading online, I think he imported a .wav kick drum sample into a convolution reverb plugin as an impulse response.
@gibsonhero233532574998
@gibsonhero233532574998 6 лет назад
Would you be willing to put that in super layman's terms for me? haha
@grahamnicholson4803
@grahamnicholson4803 6 лет назад
Sure. I'm pretty new to this too, so please bear with me. If anyone sees any errors, feel free to point them out as I'm not an expert just yet. Convolution reverbs are used to mimic reverb in a real acoustic environment. This is opposed to algorithmic reverbs which use algorithms to replicate acoustic behavior. Convolution reverbs use recorded samples called Impulse Responses to achieve their desired effect. Impulse Responses are essentially a sample of the signal made in a reverberant space by an instrument had been recorded in it without the signal of that instrument included in the result. So, for example, if you recorded a snare drum hit in a church, the Impulse Response would be the reverberant signal caused by the snare drum being hit in the church without the original signal of the snare drum hit included in the final sample. The result is a sample containing the effect of the hit in the room; that is the reverberant effect of a sound made in that room. Some convolusion reverb plugins allow you to import your own Impulse Response samples. In this video, James imported a kick drum sample that has a reverberant tail into a convolution reverb plugin as an Impulse Response. The ability to import your own Impulse Responses allows the producer to use reverb in odd ways to achieve certain sounds or effects. In this case, James uses the kick drum sample as an Impulse Response, then filters and compresses the signal going through it to achieve a rumble effect that enhances the reverberant tail of the original kick drum. This is played in parallel with the original, unmodified version of the kick drum to get both the kick and a reverberant tail in your track. Hope this helps! Here's a source I used: - www.bhphotovideo.com/find/newsLetter/Convolution-Reverb.jsp/ Here's the guide to a convolution reverb plugin that lets you import your own Impule Response. The IR-1 is actually on sale right now at Waves for $49: - www.waves.com/1lib/pdf/plugins/ir-convolution-reverb.pdf

There used to be years ago, but Ableton have completely revamped and improved their audio engine (In live 8 or 9, I don't recall). I guarantee some of your favorite songs were mixed down and finalized using Ableton Live :)

I've been thinking about it, and I might be mistaken by the whole, "Ableton have completely revamped and improved their audio engine (In live 8 or 9, I don't recall)" comment. I've been searching around because I'm almost positive that it was part of the promotional material that Live 9 had a new audio engine, but I think that I could be wrong about that. The original comment is still the same (both Logic and Live are incredible, use what you love), but the improvements might not have been as sweeping as I thought I remembered. My memories might be revising themselves :P

Yeah, it kind of sounds that way a bit, but you have to understand that he's monitoring this mix on excellent monitors (speakers), so if it sits well in the mix and sounds good on his end, then he's using them. It also might sound less than average on regular speakers, but maybe he knows that in clubs, the bassline is going to sound great.

I also use Logic, but here's reality. If you know the basic principals of audio production and enough about music theory (which I admit is a challenging and never-ending process) you just take what you learn from these Abelton Live session videos and apply them to your own DAW. Sure, you may not get some aspects of Abelton Live but if you're watching tutorial videos it's not like your trying to churn out the next big hit ahead of Deadmau5. Stats from last year: Live users 23%. Logic users: 18% all the way down to Pro Tools 5% of total music producers. That's just how it is folks.

James Wiltshire is great, but this video gets a thumbs down because the camera keeps focusing on James rather than Ableton. We don't give fuck all about looking at the producer. We want to see what he is doing in the DAW. The editor of this video must not know fuck all about music production. I see this all too often, where there are tutorials from the pros, but these idiots making the video focus on the producer talking. Get a fucking clue. We don't care about seeing the producer's lips moving. We only need to hear what he is saying and see what he is doing in the DAW.
