Build a Porch Part 1 of 6

oh cool, i will be building something very similar this spring, with an icy winter coming, not wanting visitors to slide to an icy death, I just tore a wheel chair ramp leading up to my front porch, their is a concrete step under it, but the height is all wrong and the transition to open the screen door is awkward now. This series should be a great help.

I'm so excited your doing a porch series. This is my next project starting 2012 after tax time! I loved your Tile videos and they helped me tremendously for both my bathroom projects! Thanks so much for the DIY Vids!!!!

@ts46176 Yes they should be a great help to you. The first three videos will be free. If you like what you see in those and trust me, then it should not be a problem to pay a very small fee to see the last three. Since there is virtually no ad revenue coming in, I have to figure out a way to pay for the time invested.

@gushhnet The final videos will be uploaded to my AsktheBuilder website, the dot com one, the week of December 12th. You'll have to pay a very small fee to watch the last three videos in the series. I'm doing that because the promise of great ad revenue from RU-vid has never happened. I need to pay my bills to be able to make more videos.

Without sounding like I'm being paid to say nice things about the Dot.Com site (I'm not being paid) I've been able to type in any words into the search engine and not only get the answer but also the building code! If you have to pay a little to get the end of this video series, it's a bargain considering the data base available to you on the .com site and the one on one help you can get directly from asking Tim anything you might not be able to find the answer to. I can't see how you couldn't.

@wangbungal RU-vid does pay Partners. But it's a function of: # of videos, # of times they're viewed, amount of ads that appear, number of times ads are clicked, amount of money the advertisers are willing to pay per click, etc. It's very complex. The bottom line is that if I had to calculate the amount of money I've made for the time spent creating the videos, I would probably make about 20 cents an hour. This is why I need to come up with another way to justify making the videos.

I read one of your articles on old porches and using douglas fir. Do I need to use vertical grain fir or is mixed grain ok? The front porch on my 1923 bungalow is a bit beat up between the steps and front door. In addition, there are some holes (insects) in the floor near the side of the house and I will have to tear it up for the termite man to inspect... I assume There is no way to gain access without destroying the whole thing because it is surrounded by siding and brick and it's tongue and groove. The only option I thought of was ripping one of the boards down the center and prying up 4-5 boards that run parallel along it and the affected wall? What a quandary. Thank you.
