I think your construction method is just what I need for a utility table. And I like your choice of poplar -- sturdier than pine, but not exorbitantly expensive. You earned my sub.

Thanks! Table was built as a non-permanent solution to fill an empty space in my friend's restaurant. He needed it for some temporarily required documentation and the shelf was just for some simple "storage." I expect it will take much more of a beating in that capacity than any expansion issues would cause. At least that was my thought behind it. Thanks again!
Awesome! Generally, screwing anything into workpieces that are 3/4" thickness you would use the 1 1/4" screw. I use it the most as most things I build frequently use 3/4" boards (1 inch nominal), plywood, etc.
