This video provides a review of building a small, easy to build model hang glider. I remember building many of these back in the 1970's and launching them off a small hill in my front yard and watching the glider sail along. Fun and simple times. The model can be flown indoors, or outdoors with no wind. A fun project to do with kids. Here's a link to the plan download along with the original magazine article.

John, I just started seeing your videos. I'm enjoying them. It takes me back about 20 years when my boys and I used to bring our stuff to Glastonbury and fly! They are now, sigh grown up, and I still have a basement stocked with balsa, tissue and rubber. Thank you!

Hi Peter! Glad you found my videos. We're still flying at Glastonbury although COVID has temporarily shut us down. Maybe you can visit us in the Fall when we start back up.

Cool! It's a fun project. Mine came out just a bit nose heavy and required the small dot of clay on the tail you see in the video. Fly it in really calm conditions outdoors, or indoors in a large room. Have fun!

I got a big grin as soon as I saw this....because the one time I really made a hit on the local TV in Tulsa, Oklahoma was due to a model Rogallo just about 1/2 that size.... I was flying kites at a city kite contest held in a city park, and I always entered the "Smallest Kite" competition. It was always frustrating because the organizers knew NOTHING about kites and my 7/8th" two-stick that actually flew was "beaten" by a kid that had a 3/8" kite in a glass vial that it remained in during the "judging". Feh. But after it was all over, I had my tiny little Rogallo flying high on about 5 feet of thread when a TV crew noticed and they shot it flying nice and steady....but I knew no one could see the real size on their TVs...so I gave them 2 beats and started drawing the thread down between two fingers...and as it came down, I swung my face around behind it so as it touched my fingers , it came to rest next to my s***-eating grin...and then they could see it was less that 4" across. It was kind of a hit that night on the news.. Good times. It almost made up for the idiot judges...

Which gliders are there in the trailers in your garden John?
@Watchingthevideos99
@Watchingthevideos99 Год назад
Very observant Simon! The trailers contain a Centrair 101 Pegase and a Discus CS. Thanks for watching!
@simonlemmerer
@simonlemmerer Год назад
@@Watchingthevideos99 are you flying them or are they just sleeping well in your garden? A discus would be nice, if you ever interested in selling it...
@Watchingthevideos99
@Watchingthevideos99 Год назад
I haven't flown in several years. The Pegasus is up for sale. The Discus is owned by a friend. I believe he may be selling that as well but I would need to ask him. I had considered purchasing it myself if I can sell the Peg.

Good video. Have you thought of making a German Horten Ho 229 in the shape of a hang glider.
@Watchingthevideos99
@Watchingthevideos99 Год назад
I'm building a Northrop N9M for rubber power. There are many modern hang gliders that have a similar shape to the Ho229. This hang glider was something I did just for fun. Thanks for viewing.

Dear John, I loved this video and I would really love to make this glider with my kids. Unfortunately, I don't see a working link to the plans on the OZ website. Is there any chance that you could figure out to upload or share them? Thanks, Omar

Hi Omar. There is a link in the description. Here it is let me know if it doesn't work. I just tried and it took me to the plan : outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=12560

Isn’t this the NASA Rogollo wing.
@Watchingthevideos99
@Watchingthevideos99 Год назад
Yes indeed. Invented by Francis Rogollo and then adapted to hang gliders.
@bebopkirby
@bebopkirby Год назад
@@Watchingthevideos99 The original idea as l recall was to deploy the wing from a returning space capsule in place of using a parachute. After the idea was not used they actually made a toy Mercury/Gemini capsule attached to a string that you could toss into the air and with the string, jerk open the capsule, deploying the wing which would glide the capsule back to the ground. Don’t think they sold to many.
@Watchingthevideos99
@Watchingthevideos99 Год назад
@@bebopkirby Yes, I believe what you say is correct. Somewhere I have a photo of Rogollo on the dunes at Nags Head flying the prototype as a kite. I believe a military test airplane was also built and flown. Cool stuff.
