Note the schematic in video is wrong with the diode bridge. It has been corrected in the webpage schematic. www.bristolwatch.com/ele4/variac.htm

Nice! I have an assortment of salvaged electric motors in my junk box. Some of them run on 48VDC, some on 80VDC, and one big one on 180VDC. Your design look like it will safely accommodate them all. Thanks for sharing your work.

Wow, excellent. I'm looking for some info about Solid State VARIAC, but while watching this video, I've found the perfect idea to make a variable power supply for audio amplifier testing. Thanks a lot. Greetings from Colombia.

You can use a lamp dimmer but it doesn't work the same as an autotransformer.

This Isolation Transformer - Variac circuit has a serious error. The ac lines are conected to the wrong terminals of the full bridge rectifer ! 😱! Good essential piece of safety euipment for electorncs gadgeteers !

That has been noted below already.

I would like to know how an AC supply to variac could give a DC output supply. For example input 440V AC and output 0-220V DC at 100Amps DC

I have a 3amp isolation transformer along with a 3 amp variac. That's plenty for the home hobbyist I assume ehh? I'm going to have a 2 plug output for the isolation transformer. 1 for the variac and another for my bench gear.

As long as you do not use the Isolation transformer for you scope, (you do not want to float your scope ground) only use the Isolation transformer for the equipment you are designing for test/repair.

I think you have your rectifier diodes drawn incorrectly.

You are right I'll redo it thanks.

Do you think alogen lamps would work as well, as current limiters? It's still tungsten, so it should exhibit the same thermal transient, or maybe they have too much cold resistance? That bulb is a space hog.

I think you halogen lamp. I can be used but uses so much current it defeats the purpose.

Good explanation, Sir, have a question about the capacitor, you said" it could be higher but don't go crazy" that really concerns me. I'm a electronic engineering student and I'm trying to rectify 120v AC to get almost 340 v DC trough 2 capacitors in series, I can't find information about how to calculate it correctly, and teachers don't say anything to me, if you open a TV or a washing machine the main capacitor on the power supply has a really low value and I can't understand why. Is it low because those power supply are smps?. Or is it low because it doesn't matter how clean that DC needs to be on the firs part to the supply?. In my second semester I do learn how to calculate capacitors, buy if I apply that to this I will get a really huge value and a voluminous capacitor. I'm not asking you to tell me how to calculate those capacitors. What I'm asking is why they have low values?. Sir, if you know any on this I will really appreciate if you can share some knowledge on this matter. Thank you for your time

Don't try using thousands of microfarads when say 200-500 will do.
