In this video I show you how to build, paint, and detail a background apartment building. I am using Walthers Cornerstone Parkview Terrace Tennement to build a run down apartment building with peeling paint and other details.

I made one building out of 2 kits. I modified the stairs into enclosed porches. I eliminated the stairs from the other structure and made the wall flush. The front and back were glued together to make one building. I covered the seams with strips of plastic to make separate sections and cover the seams. I joined the rooftops into one piece. It makes a nice apartment building.

That came out very nicely, Ron! I've never had any luck with the dry-brush the brick color technique. I paint the wall with a wash made of 10% paint, 90% distilled water. I usually use cheap craft paint from Walmart for this. Once it's dried, I rub the wall with a dry cotton ball. This removes the great majority of the wash from the brick surface, but leaves it in the mortar lines. What gray is left on the brick face tones down the plastic shine and gives the brick a nice weathered look. I look forward to seeing the complete scene!

A bit of detritus on the stairs like discarded cans, rags, a chair, or things stacked on it adds to the effect as well as the steps are most worn on its centers is a good place to show that wear. Leaving a few Windows like there half opened is also nice with a plant or two on a sill and a bit of curtain hanging out can be fun to since many buildings often look sterile without hints of its habitation. Details like creating a pigeon on a HO to N Scale roof is often little more than a white/gray pencil point but getting carried away doing it is part of the fun but knowing when to stop is usually when the effect can't be seen with the unaided eye...

Hey, Mike. I haven't used the basement stairwell at this point, but I'm holding it in reserve. As a background structure I don't think you would be able to see it at all.

Instead of a roof air conditioning unit, I would suggest that window units would be more typical. You can find them in most scales. For my club I did one window with someone leaning out looking at the wreckage of an air conditioner lying on the ground. I long ago lost count of how many compliments that got me.

Ron, Nicely done. I really liked the brick " effects " it makes the wall's stand out. I'm finding it's very easy to get brick walls to loose all detail in N scale. I'm going to try this method right now, thank you. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Thanks Ron for another great video. Did you have to wash the parts before painting them? Typically, the oils left on the plastic from the molds make it difficult for the acrylic paint to adhere properly.
@RonsTrainsNThings
@RonsTrainsNThings 5 лет назад
I often do wash them, but in this case no. They were very clean out of the box.

Hi, was looking for the cascade green that you use and I could only find it in a brand called true color. Never used it before but looks like it’s made by badger so it must be pretty decent. Also says airbrush ready maybe that means it does not have to be thinned. Thank you for the video, I just ordered this kit from my local hobby shop yesterday.
@RonsTrainsNThings
@RonsTrainsNThings 4 года назад
True Color is great paint, but it is enamel. I have used it for painting locomotives in the past. The Cascade Green I used was some old Polly S paint that is not longer produced. There are probably other brands that carry something close in acrylic if you prefer working with acrylic.

Ron, thanks for another great video !!! You did a fantastic job on this kit, I like how the brick turned out and the chipping effect on the wood and metal parts. This building has been in my MRR bucket list ever since I first saw it on Walthers website, I am retired from the Baltimore City Fire Department and there are quite a few of these buildings in some of the districts that I worked in, in fact I photographed one that was on fire when I was off shift. I recently purchased the Testors Clear Cement & Windaw Maker to make windows for N Scale vehicles and I was wondering if you have tried it, and if so how does it compare to the Canopy Cement for gluing clear window material? Barry

Two basic questions from someone who has not done models in a long time. How does the cement bond parts that are painted? If it wicks out in anyplace does it leave a shine over dull paints?
@RonsTrainsNThings
@RonsTrainsNThings 5 лет назад
Good questions. First, and I didn't mention it in this video but have in the past, I typically sand away the paint if there is any on the actual glue joint, but this solvent will eat through acrylic paint and glue the parts together anyway. Yes, if you get the solvent on plastic it will leave a bit of a shine, but a very find sanding stick will remove the shine, and paint will cover it. If I am making glue joints that will show I use a touch-n-flow applicator which produces a very fine bead of cement and produces an almost unnoticable joint. Here is an example of that tool in use. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R8XokVR3gKs.html

Good build but in the real world the doors and windows are usually painted wrong color and bad concrete and brick repair with off colors due to inner city not putting money into these complexes.
