Scott I would argue that of all the D4 set ups in Australia, yours is the Champion. Very impressive, thank you. I've read your write up on your build, providing me with great ideas for my 2015 D4 build for a Simpson Desert crossing in 2023. Truly appreciate your skills and ideas. Safe travels and hope to cross paths with LRD414 one day. Thank you.

Hey Scott, love your setup. Am doing something similar on my D3. There’s a few discreet winch mounts out there (at various prices). I’m looking into one. Interested to hear your reasons for the Prospeed as it’s one of the more expensive ones.
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 3 года назад
Cheers Zac. I spose I took something of a punt, assuming that the Prospeed unit would be of a higher quality than some of the more basic cradle mounts & I feel that punt has paid off. I had read a few comments along the lines of other ones needing slight modification around mounting which wasn't very inspiring. I also really rated what Prospeed had done regarding the side extensions. They are not just flimsy brackets to pick up the washer bottle and valve block. They are tubular loops that I believe will have similar strength to the factory steel bumper that gets removed when the mount is fitted (factory steel bumper extends right across the front). There is another brand that has similar features and is similar cost but I "knew" Prospeed having bought spot light mounts and a mate had their rock sliders. Devon is the other mount that I considered.

Great vid. Watched a lot of your vids and this is awesome to see what you did. Just got mine back with the 18 in Compos with 265/65 Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx on them. Have the Johnson Rods installed full time but also going to get the Proud Rhino SYA Extension Kit with the bump stop extenders and limiting straps, as I’m now scared as hell to drop to bump stop height offroad if something goes wrong. Query- if that were to happen, assuming the issue is electronic and not something mechanical with the system, like compressor failure or torn line, does the Llams allow you to clear the codes and get it back to height? I’ll do a build out vid soon and post to my channel, so keep an eye out if interested. I need to carry a kid, a dog and mountain bike or two, so a bit of a different layout for me. Have fun down there- best part of the year is coming for you guys. Not sure how many trips I’ll get in here in the States before mountains get snow.
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 3 года назад
Cheers and I will look out for your video, always good to see what people do. You won't have any issues with 265/65/R18 other than minor rubbing, depending on tyre choice. The vehicle will still drive/roll on the bump stops at that size, although it'll be a very bumpy ride. I personally would never run the extension kit and therefore be higher in the suspension travel full-time regardless of clearance actually required. The ride is far worse and things get quite bouncy in steep technical terrain the higher you go in the travel range. The beauty of Llams is that you can select a height that's no more than required for any given situation and so have the suspension as low & supple as possible for only the clearance you need. Llams will allow you to raise up close to normal height for certain types of faults where the system drops the vehicle to what it considers a "safe" height, which is approx Access height. But a diagnostic tool like the iiD from Gap will achieve the same thing and more in terms of fault clearing. Llams is great because it's so easy and quick to set the height where you want it you can respond to clearance changes rather than just set the suspension high and leave it.

@karimalameddine5092
@karimalameddine5092 3 года назад
@@sienaoverland I am thinking along the lines of the chance to sleep inside the LR4 rather than outside, much of the space inside is used to store items, and not much room for shelter. We get really harsh weather I am looking at what Kasper Hogland is doing for example. (Instagram he is showing his build process). Perhaps adding side window boxes such as in the new defender would help for example. I am also looking at Egoe Nest solutions as it has an upper sleeping arrangement with a lower kitchen and utilities. Would be nice to see your opinion on all this 🙂

Wow, Scott, the work you have done on your D4 is first class. Everything is done properly without cutting corners. Very inspiring. The one thing I noticed is that you don't have a snorkel on your vehicle. Was this ever a consideration? I have just had one fitted to my D4 as I'm doing a trip up to the Cape at the end of July. Otherwise I also have APT underbody protection, LLams height controller and the Traxide dual battery. I was thinking long and hard of putting on the 18" steelies but have kept the 19" and gone with Maxxis 980 LT. I will keep chipping away and on day my rig will hopefully be similar to yours. Keep up the good work.
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. I try to do everything properly as best I can. Did consider snorkel but in the end decided not required. If it’s deep enough to really need one I’m likely to not attempt crossing anyway. May do OTT all the way on Cape one day but even then may decide against Nolan’s
@rexringschott
@rexringschott 3 года назад
Nice setup and very well thought out.. I have a D4 to and have gone some of the way along your journey. But you've done quite a few extra smart things. I love the flat plate under your sliders - I've always though that was needed on those things. And placing the winch isolator switch under the RHS battery cover on the RHS is such a good idea. It's your wheel setup that I've been debating with myself for quite some time. I still have the stock 19" alloys - How do you rate the 18" tuffant steelies verses the 18" compomotives? is the extra unsprung weight of the steel wheels an issue do you think?
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 3 года назад
All depends on your needs but I do really believe in the value of 18" wheels for the far greater tyre choice and additional tyre volume to allow running lower pressures for sustained periods. I haven't noticed any detrimental affects from the steelie's additional mass but these days Tuffant also has alloys, which were not around when I bought the Compos. Obviously steel wheels offer the advantage of being somewhat "repairable" trackside as they're more likely to just bend rather than break or crack. But for most places there's very low risk with good quality alloys like Compo and Tuffant.
@thomasupton819
@thomasupton819 Год назад
Definitely the best set-up out there! I was wondering, do you have the optional extra rear differential lock selected? I mostly do driving on beaches and soft sand and didn’t know if stock centre diff was good enough or if you would find one with a rear diff too. Great vid!
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland Год назад
Standard drivetrain for me, no rear e-diff. For everything except the most technical, loose rock crawling the lack of rear e-diff is inconsequential. For beach driving you don't need it at all and a standard drivetrain with terrain response is more than good enough. Tyre pressure matched to the sand conditions is far more important.

@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 3 года назад
Thanks Cameron and that's a good question. The D4 really is underrated for self-sufficient long distance travel. It is such a versatile vehicle and almost perfectly suits all the types of trip we like to do, from short camping weekends to multi-week overland journeys to van towing, plus it's been a great daily driver. I had a Range Rover Classic in the 90s and then nothing for 15 years so had a soft spot for LR. But when we looked closely at the D4 in 2014 it just ticked all the boxes; the space and the ride are brilliant.

Like to see what you've done for the spare wheel swingaway. I'm assuming you've put in a long range fuel tank where the spare was.Just have put on a Rhinorack platform with the backbone rails, Didn't realise you could get mounts for the existing D4 rails.
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 2 года назад
Hi. The spare wheel holder mounts to the tow point and is removable. No I don't have a long range tank, I have the spare mounted under. I use the spare wheel holder for big trips if I want to carry 2 spares and/or extra fuel. Backbone was not available when I setup the roof platform and to be honest I'm pretty happy with the track-mounted legs anyway.

I don't have the rear ediff (locking) either, just traction control. @sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 3 года назад
Thanks Daniel. The Tuffant steelies are great. Obviously very robust & more able to cop a beating. I prefer the look of alloys and good ones are also plenty strong enough. I have not detected any difference in performance resulting from the extra weight in the steel wheels especially given that I run heavy LT tyres anyway.

The current set is 265/65/R18 but mostly I have run 265/60/R18. However, I haven't found much benefit from the bigger 265/65. Especially for touring, where its worse fuel economy doesn't offset the advantages of slightly more clearance and sidewall. I'll most likely to back to 265/60 in future.

Thanks and no, there's zero modifications required to run 265/60/R18 or even 265/65/R18 although for the 265/65 you do need to fully deflate the spare wheel to make it fit and even then it's typically tight.
@zouko1990
@zouko1990 3 года назад
@@sienaoverland ok it's good to know. Thanks. And what about the speedometer? Does having bigger wheels affect speed accuracy ? In theory, more distance is made with a wheel having a larger circumference, so the speed should be higher for the same RPM... ?
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 3 года назад
Yes bigger wheels change speedo but these sizes actually bring it closer to correct, at least in Australia. Here the speedo is required by law to never over state speed so manufacturers always apply a factor such that it under states.

@@sienaoverland Hey Scott! Thanks for sharing your priceless experience with LR lovers) Respect ✊ You can congratulate I've me just became me the part of the Discovery Family and bought my first LR Disco 4 2012 5.0 🤘 Thinking about the list of the upgrades but really want to start from the wheels, from the previous owner I've got 2 sets of wheels (summer/winter) on rims both 255/55/R19. Since I was never a huge fan of low profile tires but just going to do my first steps in off-road and over landing could you please recommend me some nice balance (in your personal opinion) between comfortable city ride and off-road capable size of the tires? I'm definitely looking forward to go for R18 but not sure about the proper parameters of the wheels would be better to buy. If you can also give some ideas of the brands and models that could help me a lot) Don't want to waist my money for unreliable products that might set me up being in the middle of nowhere. Thank you Australian LR brother! Cheers to all, Max

Did yours come stock with 19's? And if so, did you have to modify your brakes to accommodate the 18's. Sounds like you might have but just wondering how invasive the modification was
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 3 года назад
Yes I have the stock 19” wheels and no mods to brakes required with the aftermarket wheels I have. Tuffant specifically developed both steelies and alloys to fit without brake mods and with offsets that are legal in Australia.

Looks great Scott! Thanks for the video you've shared. Seeking to get one of these rigs soon. I wonder about the maintenance and possible cons and pros. I am living in Queensland and I've been told it is absolutely a gun but if anything goes wrong you will be in trouble. What do you think?
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 2 года назад
I think they’re similar to other 4WDs in that things wear out and need replacement and sometimes things break and need fixing. So far touch wood it’s never let me down. There are less mechanics who are familiar with them compared to Toyota etc and that can be difficult but they’re out there. Everything is repairable and parts are available although sometimes easier and quicker to source from UK.

@@sienaoverland Agree. I have only one friend had Discovery II for 10 years and he was so happy with it. He needed to change one part related to back door although it cost him fortune though :) He always says that. Other than that haven't heard anything bad. I am planning to head off the grid for 3 months with my partner. We both working remotely. So we are looking for something reliable and not give us pain. I am not going to go hardcore off-road anyway. Mainly beach and basic off roads.

Hi Scott how do nyou get on with the extra weight ? ie' water bladder and fuel .I know the D4 dosnt carry as much weight as the D3 .Mine is good for 840kgs
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 3 года назад
We are running basically at GVM or even slightly over for a day when in full overlanding/remote travel mode with max water and fuel, which obviously reduces as you use fuel and water. But I've never felt the weight in degraded performance even during soft dune crossing. Except maybe some wallowing of the somewhat tired shocks (now replaced). In my view the D4 performs fantastically when at or near max weight.

Hi, well done, both all the mods and the vid itself. Wouldn't you mind repeating , what brand/model the TFT resp. tab is ( guess 10" size)? I contemplated to buy a used D4, too, but the mass of damaged engines ( V6 Diesel) strikes me, which I found in the ads. Most of them suffer from a broken crank-shaft, at least rotten crank-bearings. Are you not afraid, it will happen to your D4? Any precautions to reduce the risk? Cheers Heinz, Germany

@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 3 года назад
Yes, I do worry about the crank shaft breaking and needing an expensive replacement engine. But it is a relatively low risk and I'm prepared to take that risk because the D4 is so good for how we use it & nothing else appeals, except maybe a new Defender. There's really nothing you can do as a precaution except regular oil changes, which are no guarantee.
