This video shows you how to build a 2-cell A123 receiver pack for your RC model airplanes.
A123 batteries are the very best option for modern 2.4GHz RC systems because they provide plenty of voltage headroom and astonishing current-handling capabilities. They're also far safer than lipos, have no "memory" and won't be destroyed if you accidentally run them completely flat.
Using this video as a guide, you can build your own super-good A123 receiver pack for around US$20.
I use these 1100mAH packs in my glow-powered models up to 1.20 cubic inches (20cc) and also any gliders larger than a DLG.
For bigger IC models, you can use the 2300mAH A123 cells and the same techniques. A 2S 2300mAH A123 pack can be used in planes as large as a 55cc gaser with two 2300mAH packs (fed through two switch harnesses) capable of powering even a 40% model.
You can discuss this project in the comments on this video or in the RCModelReviews forums at:

I had always tried to avoid your video because I didn't want to get confused with different pronunciations , until I found a video of a linguistics professor who explains how Michigan changed A to E. Now I can watch your video in peace, knowing the quirks.

I always like watching videos on making battery packs! A123 packs are great, very durable. I lost a 3s pack while carrying my packs in to the house one Fall. It fell under a bush. I didn't find it again until the following Spring and it still worked great even after being out in the rain for 7 months.

Oh and by the way, it really doesnt matter how you pronounce solder, as an American, I'm used to hearing things pronounced differently even by people in my own country. I do enjoy hearing people from other countries with different accents speak. Again, I enjoy watching and learning alot from your videos very much. As someone who's mechanicaly inclined but new to the RC world, it's very good to have someone knowledgable such as yourself helping out. Thank you sir!

As usual informative video. Soldering:- Wires that go together should be twisted together then soldered. Tabs with holes should have the wires going through the holes then solder the connection. e.g. mechanical connection first then electrical connection with solder last.

Yeah really, we pronounce the L in soldier, but leave out the i, and it becomes a different word. Also, y'all, you all, and all y'all refer to different sized groups. All 3 of those terms are important to us all.

Absolutely one great teacher. You are very well spoken in the Queens English and I love the clarity with which you give these videos. I've made packs and am amazed at how quickly you melt your solder with your iron. I never see you clean it, must clean mine after each wire. I will use more of the solder as I see how it makes much of a difference in the way that you use it. Question, If you are using digital servos how does the voltage on this pack not burn them out? Thank You very much.

At a push you can make your own balancing lead from the same 3 pin male conector you use for the discharge cable, using all 3 wires it comes with (in the case of 2 cell). Just remember which way the negative wire goes in your charger. If you need 4 pins (for a 3 cell battery), then you can use the motherboard USB or internal speaker connector from a computer case.

Excellent video Bruce! Ran across your video while researching how to build some A123 battery packs for amateur radio use. Any tips for making larger battery packs like a 4S4P? I've heard of people using a polyswitch to prevent internal shorts. Any ideas about that or how the balancer comes into play during charging? Much appreciated!

Also, balance leads on A123 or other LiFePO4 batteries is a little "redundant" as they tend to stay at a very small voltage margin until they are discharged. Balancing bases itself on there being an equal voltage between the cells, not amperage. If the voltage is the same at 50% capacity as it is at 100% capacity for example, then what is there to balance?

Hi Bruce. I know this is going to be a stupid question, but If you put 2 of these A123 batteries together you will end up with a pack that is 6.6V. Now, I know that the FR Sky RX that both you and I use can accept this, (4v-7v), but if I put it into a Park Flier and have a separate LiPo running just the motor, is the speed controller or RX going to reduce the output voltage down to 4.8V for the servos?

@Slugsie1
@Slugsie1 9 лет назад
jack moreland You can't reduce the mah, but it won't hurt. Higher mah just means that the battery will last longer. There is a potential weight penalty however (higher capacity mah batteries are typically a bit heavier), so bear that in mind if weight is a concern.
