I’d like to help you have a greater understanding of the materials you choose to use or not use. It comes with a story. Rubber trees are tapped to collect rubber secretion. That is used to make tires and tubes and all rubber products. When it was being tested and worked in the lab, the defining moment came when carbon was added, turning it from white to black that we recognize today. This greatly improved the qualities of the rubber making it stronger and resistant to UV rays from the sun. Ok, if you’ve followed along this far, PVC pipe is similar. White PVC pipe degrades in the sun by Ultraviolet Rays (UV) and makes the PVC pipe brittle, to stop this for PVC electrical pipes, carbon was added to block the UV rays and make it lays in the direct sunlight! So, to make a hoop house or greenhouse using PVC pipe as the supporting ribs, you must use the grey PVC pipe normally associated with electrical work! I hope this helps you and everyone that reads it!

I’ve had pvc pipe for my pool out in the sun and exposed to chemicals for 10 years and it is holding up fine, if it lasts even that long I’d be happy 👌

That’s great! I’m just trying to help. Here in America they must not but adding UV stabilizers but maybe they do for you. I’ve made insect netting covers that look like cold frames over my brassicas and in the 3rd year they were brittle.
@Homeonthetools
@Homeonthetools Год назад
@@grdelawter4266 yeah in OZ they add stabilising additives to make it hold up “better” to UV light, the premium pipe I bought was told it may yellow off over time but with hold it’s structural integrity

Yep, in Aust and NZ most of our white PVC piping is UV stabilised and will last for years. Our guttering and down pipes are also made from UV stabilised white PVC. The guttering on our house here in NZ is original and still in good condition. The house is 36 years old. For our American friends, we don't tend to use metal guttering/spouting in this part of the world anymore. Great build @Homeonthetools.

you actually do want the bent pvc pipe under pressure when you bend it over, dont heat it. With the tension of the pipe pushing out og your greenhouse, tunnel when you cover with your greenhouse plastic sheeting you have much more resistance to collapsing from wind and snow load

Nice one James, I just subbed to your channel, just a heads up, with the hot glue gun, over the years I've learnt...I'm 66 yrs old, that in stinking hot blazing sun hot glue WILL start to re-melt and run, I've had it happen TOO many times I now don't use it and haven't for years. Just my thoughts mate. Seeya Rob

Thanks Rob, yeah a buddy I’ve mine said the same thing, I might have to come up with another solution like silicone adhesive or something. Thanks for the sub 👍🏻

Looks great! What length is each arch half. 10ft? & what is total length of this? 6x10?
@Homeonthetools
@Homeonthetools Год назад
Thanks 🙏🏻 each arch is 3 metres so 9ft. The width of the concrete slab is 6 metres with each arch (left and right) 3 metres giving me 2 metres of height in the centre (hope that makes sense)

'heat' the sand
@Homeonthetools
@Homeonthetools Месяц назад
Heat the sand up with the oven as in the video, I tried a couple of other methods to heat the pipes like a heat gun but only sand worked so that’s the go 👍🏻

Historical evidence has shown using PVC pipe and Poly- tarp , allows a large friction coefficient, and rapid degradation of the areas touching the hoops. Taping the hoops prior to covering, slows the process. Of note PVC isn't UV impervious, and the Gray electrical conduit has a nasty habit of expanding when hot, and the expansion joints are expensive. Otherwise great job

why round instead of square?
@Homeonthetools
@Homeonthetools 3 дня назад
No edges with round creating less friction that will rub through the plastic cover, plus pvc is plentiful in round in the hardware store

I wonder if one could use a heat gun to shape the pvc whilst in the jig?

Nah mate I tried it, just blew holes straight through it and even on low setting I couldn’t get consistent bends without burning

@Homeonthetools
@Homeonthetools 5 месяцев назад
Hey mate, on hot days I keep the door open to let some air flow through, if I was starting again from scratch I would put a couple of vents in the front and back panels with maybe a zipper type setup, something to consider if you are building one. thanks for watching

Please don't use PVC in your garden, though it does last temporarily it will eventually just break down through sun exposure. Instead of PVC try using galvanized chain link fence upper rail bend to the shape you desire and enjoy that frame for decades to come instead of years.
@Homeonthetools
@Homeonthetools Год назад

@ianshand6094

See my reply above Matt. We have UV stabilised white PVC piping in Aust and NZ. It will last for donkey's years. In the northern hemisphere, you'll need to make sure you source UV stabilised PVC piping or use galvanised steel or aluminium pipes.
