Build Your Own Walk-In Cooler | DIY Cold Storage in a Shipping Container | sustainable cold storage
In this project, we'll convert a standard insulated shipping container into a multi-sectioned walk-in cold storage unit. This project is ideal for storing various foods at different temperatures and supporting a localized food system.
Blue prints, a list of all the materials used in this product and where to find them, plus more detailed instruction can be located on the Sowing Prosperity Institutes website. www.sowingprosperity.com/

Why We Need Better, Cheaper Cold Storage for Local Foods:
Local foods are close to my heart. I truly believe that the food we eat has a massive effect on our lives. Eating fresh and nutrient-rich food tastes better and supports our health and local community.
Everyone loves the taste of fresh, local produce. But one downside - these foods don't stay fresh for long. So, while they have superior taste, they can go bad quickly. However, this isn't just a problem; it's also an opportunity! If food doesn't last long, we need to grow it closer to where people live. This can inspire new people to start farming and current farmers to grow more types of food.
But here's where we must become innovative and develop solutions to facilitate the food system. Once the food is harvested, it needs to be stored in cold places to keep it fresh. Many of our local farmers face a challenge here. They want to store their produce in the best way possible, but good cold storage is often too expensive.
The Cold Storage Problem:
Even with such a great system, there's one big challenge. How do we keep all these foods like meat, dairy, veggies, and fruits cold? Big cold storage units are costly. So, many local farmers can't afford them, and we certainly can’t based on the quotes we've received..
On top of some big price tags that have been out of reach for us personally, we have had a lot of trouble getting reliable help from refrigeration professionals. Therefore, we need solutions so we can take care of ourselves.
A Cool Solution: Cold Storage in a Box!
There's an idea and the project we undertook.
"Necessity is the mother of invention"
We used a 40’ shipping container, the kind you see on big ships or trains, to make affordable walk-in coolers. These coolers can keep different parts at different temperatures, which is perfect for storing various types of foods.
The specific unit we got is an insulated container that was used in Chiquita transporting produce from Central and South America. The refrigeration unit is broken and not cost-effective to fix. So we are able to get a vast insulated box at a great discount!
By using a tool called CoolBots hooked up to window air conditioners in these containers, they can get as cold as the big, expensive storage units but cost a lot less.

Why This Matters:
Having affordable cold storage is good for everyone. It helps farmers, supports local businesses, and ensures we get fresh and healthy foods. Plus, supporting local food is better for the environment since the food doesn't have to travel far.
Using shipping containers as coolers is an idea that provides a more cost-efficient way of getting the precious cool storage room needed. It helps ensure everyone can enjoy fresh, local food without it going bad.

I moved to Africa from Canada a few months ago. As I am researching business opportunities, I realized fruits and vegetables are not stowed properly. I also realized that a cold storage business could be a good business opportunity. I searched alibaba for cold storage rooms, but the price of the units plus shipping are way out of my budget. I decided to search RU-vid for DIY cold storage room. I came across your channel and bingo. I know this is exactly what I need to start my business. Thank you for sharing this information 🙏

How bad is icing over on your ac units? That's the first thing that comes to mind, if the units are running all the time, at temps much lower than designed, wouldn't they freeze up?
