Jeremy. What causes throat irritation during the dry and cure? Is it from jarring buds too early? That's my best guess. Even weed from dispensary is like this sometimes. I do it at home too and I think it's from jarring/curing too early. I think I'm gonna start hanging for 4 weeks instead of 2 weeks at 60/60.? You say as long as environment in drying area is like in a jar you shud be good on a 4 week dry correct? I'm sick of screwing up this process every grow. Stem snap do you mean when the bud stems snap or the main stems snap?
Thank you once again! I wanted to add that the first 3 days of drying are very crucial for setting the tone. In my research, you need some leaves on the plant for proper off-gasing. Keeping the light and dehumidifier air off the plants while drying will prevent premature drying. Some people disagree, but humidity packs are only for after the cure is finished. These are the things I've learned. Failure to perfection.... as always, research your research! Thank you!!
I discovered the best drying/curing technique by accident, when I forgot about my buds in the drying tent. Now I just do the same thing, hang my buds up untrimmed but cut from the main stalk, I hang dry them for 3 weeks in a tent no light at 72 deg F and around 55% RH. After 3 weeks they are perfectly dried and then I trim and I put them in a masons jars filled about 75% of the way, burp them everyday at least once and when I burp them I take all the buds out of the jar for a minute and then put them back in. Ends up being top shelf quality everytime.
YES!!!!! Tortilla Hack is no doubt the absolute best way to “bring back” flower everyone always looks at me crazy then they never switch back. DONT SLEEP On this man full of all the classic knowledge. Never gets old with the reassurance from you makes me feel like I know what I’m doing. And almost always learn something new. Legend!
If you're bud is a tad too dry you put a piece of a fresh soft tortilla and it should rehumidify the bud slowly back to whereyouwantitwithout altering scent or flavor. @@billyballsup2685
I put a white grape in the jar if it's too dry and don't have a boveda pack. That way nothing wet is touching the bud and it just releases moisture really slowly though the grape's stem hole

He's right about south eastern Michigan 😉 I dry in my garage in late October early November the highs are around 55 to 65 and the humidity is about the same. I still use a humidifier to keep it at a steady 60ish

I also had this problem with my AC Infinity controller on day two and woke up eight hours later to my tent at 79% humidity. I immediately opened my tent and exhausted the Moisture out. I hope I saved it in time.

I swear! I switched to mostly hash cause of this, haha. My friend jacked up his first grow terribly, but awkwardly enough, fire small bud, lol. Literally tastes just like grape juice. Was low key jealous it worked for him on the forst try. Where my grows were great, till drying. Damn low rh winters.

I have a unique sure fire way of determining when flowers are dry enough for sealing away I came up with by accident. If you take some flower and press rosin, if it cleans up easily off the parchment it's ready, if it smears it still has too much water content.
After a year of growing, my plants have never dried/cured better👍👍 I only have a 4x4 tent with only 4 plants in 7gal fabric pots. Using this space for drying proved to be golden for me. I was able to keep temps at 63.5 and humidity levels at 60 or within a three or four degree differential. @@samanthaf6482 My tent is in a back bedroom in my basement with all heating registers closed. I run a portable humidifier on a timer to maintain 60%. I live in Toronto and we are currently in the winter season so the current temps have worked in my favour. In the summer months I just use a portable Ac unit with an additional duct run that I run from my home hvac equipment😎 Im a refrigeration mechanic by trade.

Couple of tips...when I'm ready to harvest I put a few nugs in a small jar for a couple of hours with a hydrometer and take a reading. If I over dry, then I use a bit of the plants trunk or make few sticks out of the branches and add them to the jar for couple of days.
Jeremy I'm so grateful to you for this channel. On my second year of growing in a 5x5 tent with a bar style 600 watt LED. PhotonTek X600W Pro to be exact. This latest grow was a tough one, had small issues along the way in seedling stage of all stages, but got it lined out in veg, only to have difficulty in determining when to chop and drop. Some trichomes were cloudy and a few amber, but still had many crystal clear! It was supposed to go 56~63 days.... I chopped them on day 81. Plants were in heavy fade and looking poor, but the buds were awesome looking, smelling and greasy to no end. I'm on day 4 of drying in the tent with a humidifier holding steady at 60% with 3 fans in the tent aimed away from the hangers. Whole plants tied up with yarn.... did I miss anything? Thanks so much!
it may dry to fast with three fans blowing around. i usually dry about 2lbs in a 2x4 with my ac infinity 6 inch fan on 1 and no fans blowing around usually around 64 degrees and about 62-64rh i run a humidifier in the lung room the tent is in to keep the rh up.
Better to have more amber than clear. Especially if taking a reading from the top of buds. Having more amber will just make it higher in cbd and still be a nice smoke and max out on the yield. Nothing worse than cutting early and getting less than 4 oz on a plant
Thank you for answering my question! When I wait until the stems snap it’s always to dry ( maybe I’m testing the wrong stems) but instead of using food I just tape a moist paper towel to the lid and leave it for a couple hours. Glad to know it doesn’t affect the final product
I feel stem snap tells you when your too dry, not sure why these folks tell everyone to test stems til they have a snap to them. Our stems are still bendable. One issue is every person's place is a total different in the way to hang and dry before cure.

You couldn't be more on point to bring up the idea that we focus on the grow, but need to keep in mind the dry and cure. We need someone, maybe me, to develop a home cure box that is equipped with everything to plug and play. Anyways, thanks for the content.

another excellent FAQ. great topic. been growing 3 years now and this is still the hardest part to be consistent on. some of that is due to being in phx, az but its certainly a balance! and i can confirm you will get better with time on it. lots of fun tech stuff to help us automate some of it but even still those need tweaking to make sure you stay consistent. sometimes low tech is a winner. cheers dude! love all the knowledge and info ! transformed my grow and got me growing veggies in my veg tent
Hey Jeremy. Love watching the vids and been a long time customer. I love that you want to and follow through with educating the new grower on organic growing with your 10x10 series. Do you think we could do a more advanced series where you don't go over all of the basics again? Maybe dive into the breeding that was talked about in I think season 3? Keep doing what you're doing.
If your environment is tropical I recommend removing the biggest colas and breaking them down into smaller buds. The rest can hang dry. I've had mold too many times during the dry process in huge, rock solid buds. Even with 60/60 temp/humidity.
Hi I'm in Thailand and about to pull down 3 plants of gorilla glue and have some really big buds especially the top ones Do you think its best to break these down into smaller buds Also do you recommend using a room with air con to keep temp down and a fan to circulate the air as much as possible Thanks anticipation

Great FAQ. I’ve been wet trimming my plants and freezing the flowers. At which point they go into the freeze dryer . Final product comes out fantastic 👌🏻
Today is day 14 of dry for my beloved Banana Krumble and they're now at 71% Rh. Ambient Rh is 50% today so I can eek them down to 65-64 in probably a couple days, then trim and jar.

Quick question I've had plants now drying that are in week 3.. they smell awesome, and I'm at about 62% humidity, about 58°.. but still not getting stem snap they don't seem to have any mold.. my question is is the longer the dry better or do we ideally shoot for two weeks

NEXT SEASON: I think it would be awesome to see your favorite strain grown in the different quadrants. For example, 1 halitosis in each section. That would allow us to see if the different growing methods yield different results.
I did hear about fresh frozen thank you for the full explanation, but yes I meant using freeze drying to skip the drying(I've seen people do something about it commercially but it wasn't very clear how so), I hear chlorophyll is broken down by bacteria/enzymes over the drying/curing process but I bet it would still work if the curing environment was used traditionally at first, ideally I'd split a larger plant into different segments to try the different styles on as close to an identical sample as possible
I've been drying in a humid environment for a while now and have a lot of people ask me how I do it so well... I tell them when the stems snap but don't break off to take some buds and put them in the bottom of a jar with a humidity reader for a couple hours. That will tell you the relative humidity of your buds. I wait until the buds are 60%RH before jarring. The RH will fall after a few months. So keep in mind if you are pressing rosin you want your buds at 62%RH. For smoking I like 58%RH. There's no right or wrong way to dry cure. This is just how I do it. I also only fill the jars halfway so that the chlorophyll gases can rise above the bud and I burp the jars once a day for the first week and once every other day the second week. Then I don't touch the jars for 1-2 months. Remember it's called a burp for a reason and every time you open the jar you're releasing terpenes. 😜 Stay Frosty!
After I started using B.A.S I grew myself out of room! My plants got well over twice as big as I was used to. I have clones coming out my ears....my room looks like an abandoned unkempt jungle. I had to give 2 big plants away. It was that or pull and kill them, I was out of room........I love the BuildaSoil way!!
I came across something weird last harvest, a nug fell on the floor during bucking after hang drying, and it dried to a crisp. I busted it up and smoked it and it tasted better than my normally cured in jar after hang dry. Im at a loss for words, it's counter intuitive to what we are always taught to do, and it came out better flavour. Consistency, yes very dry but the flavour was on point.
Lol I made the same discovery as you before. I hanged dry my plant and I forgot about some in the drying tent, came back to it a month later it was perfectly dried. It was at room temperature with about 55-60 % RH and practically no air movement. Like you it ended up being better than the buds I actually didn't forget about and jarred. Ever since then I dry in a tent with no light inside, hanging my buds untrimmed and I leave it in there for about 3 weeks.
Hey Jeremy, I love the show, and I'm a huge fan. I've been watching the series since the beginning. Just been watching this episode and heard a question on tropical climates. I live in northern Australia, where we have two seasons, the wet and the dry. There was a question from a viewer who lives in the tropics and was worried about humidity and how to control it. The problems I've ran into over the years with high humidity and warm temperatures is, when we dry, we have to use aircons to bring temperature down, the problem I run into there is, the room drys out along with the tents the harvest is hanging in. Colder the air, the less moisture it holds. I can barely get humidity up over 50%, 55%, and the harvest will be done in 7 days or a little less sometimes. And the end result still comes out fine with terps and all. (I use bovida packs to rehydrate to a balanced product) What I've done to rectify this, is purchas/order a couple of ac infinity humidifiers and coupled with there exhaust and controller that i already have, I can finally, fully dial in my drying environment. After 8 or so years fighting this battle, this is the only solution i can see to have complete control over that environment, just like I do when I grow my mushrooms but smaller. Hope this helps your viewer. Using bovida packs to rehydrate the flower, I use 2× 450g packs in a 10L bucket 3/4 full with medicine. The packs will Crystalize, and the medicine hydrates to perfect condition for me, firm with a spring upon a light squeeze. The terps return with no hay smell. That said perfect would be better😁🌱.Love the effort you and the build a soil team put in to make this content. It truly is priceless. 👏 ✌️

Hey Jeremy. Question: in the Kid Kaya Farm tour video, Kurt mentioned that if he could have just one thing in the garden, it would be aerated water. As tent gardeners, what should we be doing for proper water aeration? Is spraying with a Chapin enough, and if so, does it have to be a 1949, or will the $15 plastic ones do the trick? Thanks for all you do. Your compendium of FAQ videos have essentially grown into an Intro to Living Soil Cultivation course, and I tell new growers to listen to all of them in order to get a solid handle on the subject matter.
In the tent like how I do it, I use a bucket and have a pump with a tall fountain like head. Use it for aerating any tea you make you. All in one water and tea and awesome sounding feature for cheap.
most of the plants i been growing are so frosty this year all i will remove is fan leafs till dry which take me about 10 days with temps of 23-25c and 55-60% rh works great then it gets bagged for cure its always smooth not harsh so i like it

💕✌🏼🌱 I'm in the southeast where it's hot and humid and I'm experimenting for the first time with leaving the stalks untrimmed for drying. So far the first plant i did turned out with better buds than a wet trimmed plant. If you're sure your dry room is what it needs to be at 60/60, it shouldn't matter what the weather is like outside because you're in a controlled environment...although as you frequently say, everybody can have subtle differences in environment. If my dry room gets more humid, I increase air flow
This may interest you...I was watching Cannabis the other night and the commercial grows there said they always get a stable 60/62f in their high tech facility, But the drying time did fluctuate depending on the outside humidity. Strange but true.

I've learned that 60-62% is to high humidity for storage and final curing/ drying. I have two jars of multiple strains, one dried at 60% humidity 65-70F and stored at 60%. The other dried at 60% humidity 65-70F for 10 days and 55%-58% for the last day. The buds I store at 55- 58% smell way more than the ones at 60%. And they even feel stickeyer strangely. Taste stronger in the smoke too. My theory is that water absorbs smell kind of like carbon scrubbers do in smoke stacks. I think much of the problem also comes from the fact that most people store there herb at a higher temp then there dry room. Higher temps in your storage room and jars at the same 60% RH from your dry room means you are actually expositing your herb to more water in the air in storage than in your dry room. This is because higher temp air holds more humidity so even at the same 60% Rh in a hooter room there is more water in the air. This is why I lower my storage humidity to 58% to compensate for the water added to the air at a higher temperature. Even if you store your herb in a cooled room as soon as you take it out of the room you start to get issues.
Really good insights here. I'm gunna have to noodle on that some more... There are so many factors that play into reaching and maintaining that perfect moisture equilibrium between the flower and the air surrounding it.
it depends on the strain. i have been growing these two strains for several years so i’ve played with the storage humidity. one of them is better with the 62% boveda packs and the other one seems to moist when you smoke it at 62% so i store that one at 58% .
Spot on with your observations. RO "Relative" humidity...so with 60% and 62F being the sweet spot based on that balance. Some commercial growers dry at 55F and 55%. In hot climates people use all the sevens 70f and 70% I use my AC inf controller in my dry tent and 60% and 62F gives a vpd of .77 so does 70 and 70 and 55 and 55. Obviously if going for a higher balance, due to your high ambient temps, will require extra vigilance on your air flow. The main rule of thumb is to NOT let humanity get higher than the temp, but you can definitely balance rather than stick to a fixed humidly figure.

Hi, Jeremy and Co. I'm surprised the paper bag post-dry and post-trim question didn't come up. I have a feeling I know how you'll answer this, but I'll ask for those that still use the method. After you've dried and trimmed your buds, some people say putting your nugs in a brown paper bag like you get from a grocery store for 1 or 2 days or even 1 to 2 weeks pulls out any residual moisture that might be hanging around in your stems. What's your take on this? Thanks for all the free knowledge. I was in the PFA group (among other sites on various forums) before you started BuildASoil and I remember the day you announced it. i dry in a 4x4 and it gets dry around here, so what i do is i put a paper towel at the bottom and spray it with water. works like a charm. Also great videos! l learned so much.

After 16+ days at 60F & 60%RH with audible stem snaps, what do you think of using Grove bags instead of jars for storage. They have all sizes, and even drum sizes for commercial apps. I'm a user, and not affiliated, etc. I just wonder what your thoughts on Grove bags were. Thanks!
I’m going to try them for the first time this year when my out door is done.I’m goin for the terp lock wicket bags it’s their answer to the turkey bag and 27 gallon is only 1.89 or something like that so an affordable option.
First off.. your content is top notch & I love what your doing with your experience & knowledge growing this glorious plant. One thing you mentioned that I would argue the opposite way is that smaller plants might not produce as dense of nuggs as bigger plants. I honestly feel in my experience that smaller plants are EASIER to grow dense nuggs on. My harvests have kinda proved this over the last three years with my smaller plants trained the same way producing denser than those of their bigger sisters. It makes sense to me as the nutrients don't have to travel the great distances of a bigger plant?

I suggested he'd be better of just relocating, cos there's no justifying a whole grow just to "experiment" with a drying technique.
