Hello and welcome back to the bench!
This 2 part build will cover a DIY recreation of the ZO: Fuzz, a modified John Hornby Skewes Zonk II Fuzz built by Reeves Electro in the UK.
In this video, we'll look at the ZO: and Zonk II schematics, breadboard the circuit, and experiment with different components.
Enjoy!

Drift is 500k swell is 25k miller cap is 470 to 100pf but it's in some and not others as it's the final voicing step .. great video man ✊ I'd tell you my hfes ... But uuumm no 😂😂😂

Man this is so cool to see this. I've built a couple pedals and an amp. Can't wait to start messing with stuff like this 😊

Cool video. I’d watch as many of these as you would do. I always wish more builders would make videos like this. Breadboard and explain. Thanks,

Fuzz is great to build. The satisfaction to component count ratio is highly rewarding

Simply beautifully executed! It would be awesome if you can spend some breadboarding on making clear does caps of similar value but different material (CBB, correction, Wima, Epcos) make difference in sound. Many people are wonders for years (not in tube hi impedance high voltage scenario or guitar tonecap) about that and there is literally zero videos around. You can make it clear ones and for all.

I've been experimenting with zonk circuits recently, i had a heartbreaking result where i built one using old germanium transistors from an IBM1401 which was perfect, infinite sustain....and then snapped a leg off the Q2 transistor and simply could not get any transistor in that position which sounded the same. The layout i had had a 2M2 resistor on the output side which i added a spdt bypass option to, also put the input cap on a selector switch as the stock is a tad bright. Once i get a good replacement Q2 i'll finish the build :)

Discovered your excellent channel when researching fuzz (and because I think some boutique pricing is totally outrageous … like IOT for instance). However I wonder if you ever reverse engineered a IOT fuzz to get the transistor specs? Sure would be interested in that one ! 😎👍🏻🤘🏼

What is so special about the 3416 transistors to get that Zonk Tone? Build the Analog Man Peppermint Fuzz it has a buzz control plus a trim pot for different temperature settings so the transistors will react differently. Build the Roger Mayer Visage has dipswitches settings 45 combinations.

Where did you get the amazing breadboard? I could use one of those in my life.

Why do fuzz circuits (maybe all circuits?) sound just a bit different on a breadboard when compared to when the circuit is put into a pedal enclosure and wired up in a final state? The circuits I've heard on a bread board have more "air", more bite, more transients on the initial attack, and more bloom, and they have had less of that once soldered up in a pedal enclosure. Is that all in my head, or is that a real thing? My guess is that the soldering of the joints and the enclosure itself can act like a resistor (add some resistance, or is it a capacitor changing the capacitance) in the same way that using shielding paint or copper tape to fully shield a single coil guitar can turn the routed space in say, a fully shielded Stratocaster, into a bit of a phantom resistor, or is it capacitor? The shielding paint or copper tape not only blocks outside radio interference noise, but it also cuts "air" frequencies and a hint of top end and a bit of transients and tames a bit of the attack and bloom...and the soldering and pedal enclosure has a similar effect on pedal circuits. Does any of this make any sense?

yes, breadboard circuit has 'more air' in sound, because when you put circuit into enclosure you basically close the airflow so it cannot breath. same with 'more bite' - good luck with biting aluminum box, it's definitely easier without enclosure.

I found a Teledyne can opamp in a pretty trashed unknown fuzz pedal prototype from the late 1970s. RU-vid video is - OygRyivfJRc I don't know YT comments let you paste a direct link to the video.

hey! this video really inspired me to build a pedal of my own! i have a quick question, i'm having trouble finding a 2N3416 NPN transistor. are there any other transistors you'd recommend as an alternative?
@graybenchelec
@graybenchelec 5 месяцев назад
Sure, pretty much any lowish gain NPN will work. 2N2219, 2N3904 come to mind.
@jojo-jv9yd
@jojo-jv9yd 5 месяцев назад
@@graybenchelec thank you for getting back to me so quickly! I'll definitely take a look at those! Just a quick follow up question, didn't you use a high gain (high hfe) transistor for this schematic?
@graybenchelec
@graybenchelec 5 месяцев назад
@@jojo-jv9yd I don't recall to be honest. I would think for a vintage fuzz I would lean towards lower gain (under 200 at least)
@jojo-jv9yd
@jojo-jv9yd 4 месяца назад
@@graybenchelec okay that makes sense. you used like something around the mid 100s hfe in the video. great! thanks for answer my questions, i'm pretty stoke to build one myself!

Do you have a parts list for this im new to breadboarding and it seems like you have only a few components but I'm getting confused by the other caps and resistors diodes etc. that are on the outside of the actual breadboard?
@graybenchelec
@graybenchelec 5 месяцев назад
Don't worry anything outside of the breadboard is not part of the Zonk circuit. I'd recommend checking out a Zonk II PCB, that will have a comparable parts list

What kind of amp was this running into ?

This would have either been a modded bassman, or that HDR/ODS conversion.
