In this video we take a quick break from building the Talullah Outrigger canoe and check out another multihull build in the works. ‪@MJSailing‬ Is building a Max Cruise 44' catamaran by themselves and we get a tour of their boat in the works. We also have a great chat about how they got into this project, their approach, and what it takes to build a 44' performance cruising catamaran with their own hands. Was MJ pulling our leg when they said be in the water for the 2024 season? IMHO they are at ;east 2 years away from finishing given the progress so far. If they hire help maybe they can make the 2024 season.

I get it there is a trend a , fashion almost an obsession with fast lightweight catamarans . I hear the arguments: You can sail around bad weather ,sometimes maybe , you can sail in lighter winds yes , you can do consistent higher mileage days probably . But it’s like building a fast light responsive well handling sports car . In my view sports cars are toys for fun a few hours , a weekend blast maybe , but how many people would go continent crossing or world touring in a sports car .

Having designed and built my performance cruising cat over 20 years ago and cruised over 30,000 miles with it I must disagree. A great number of attributes of a fast cat make it a great cruising boat. Assuming there are no keels, extremely shallow draft is one. Assuming very low displacement efficiency under power is another as is a small rig. In order to go fast the bridge deck clearance must be significant which has many cruising advantages. The single biggest factor is they are fun to sail even during a long passages. We will see what these folks end up with but the trap is overloading. I am reminded of Newick's comment about modern inconveniences. There is so much room to fill with so much stuff. A performance cat that does not perform is sad and possibly dangerous.

I love watching your adventures but not really interested in boat restoration just for the sake of making it appear better. If all you did was float around some small inland lake it makes sense but to never get out and explore the world seems like a monumental waste of time and money if you never really go somewhere. I guess I will never understand why you focus on the "performance" oriented boats. Do you plan on racing it for money and building a resume to get a crew position on one of the America's cup boats. I thought it was supposed to be a liveaboard catamaran because they are a little more stable on the anchor, draft a couple less feet plus being beachable should you desire to park on the sand. A catamaran is few knots quicker on a long passage but should you ever get in unexpected rough weather a catamaran will suffer structural failure long before a mono hull ever will. Is being at sea really that objectionable you need to save a day or 2 under sail power? I would think if you want to live on this boat I would gladly give up some speed for durability and comfort. With a bit more weight to get a proper shower you will need a good watermaker. A healthy generator to recover the batteries and run the AC appliances. Air conditioning is really a must when it's 110 degrees for weeks on end. For what you are doing it would be a fraction of the cost of owning a boat and maximize your exploration and travel time to fly and stay in motels or some other land accommodations you can find on the internet. No more haulout, hull maintenance, bottom paint, propeller repair, shaft leakage, Constant corrosion of all electronics especially autopilot, radar, radio, running lights and or moorage fees. No dingy or boat contents to guard from local thieves. No pirates to endanger your lives or Sierra from being kidnapped and sold into the sex trade. No hurricane damage, never be caught a couple extra weeks in bad weather. No engine or electrical problems, no sail to replace, No $2000 grocery bills or cockroaches to feed. Rental car fees are exactly the same. Internet works about anywhere you will be sleeping. Please consider a boat you can really live on rather than a weekender. Good luck and keep sailing. I will support you whatever you decide.
