In this episode of building a barndominium, we start framing bedroom walls. Our process for framing bedroom walls, or any walls for that matter, in a post frame is a little unconventional. yes it may take a little bit longer, but It ensures everything is as good as possible.

Kyle: "Come here Greg; you're gonna' have to manipulate my wood for me." Greg: "You're gonna' have to rephrase that." This is from one of the funniest lines I've ever heard on RR during a previous episode when the guys were removing film from metal roof panels: Kyle: "Greg, finish me off here." Greg: "You're gonna' have to rephrase that." (spoken in a very dead-pan manner) 😂😂😄😄

As an adult (age 36) back in the mid 90s, I built a house (not far from the location of RR buildings). Great room had a big cathedral ceiling and I totally installed a hard-core mini basketball hoop; acrylic backboard, metal break-away rim, etc. Many 2-on-2 championship tournaments were played in that room!

Cool math at 15:50 into the video on the sloped wall Kyle! I did the calculation too on the CM 4065-Pro just to follow along etc. Enter 15-1/4" + 1/8" = 15-3/8". Then add 16", = 31-3/8". . . each successive press of the = sign gives the 16" o.c. layout mark down the wall line accounting for the 1/8" increase in Diag at each stud! . . . Math rules! . . . I love my construction calculators. AAAhhh the joy framing, a visual sense of accomplishment as you stand among the forest of SPF #2's. I can almost smell them through the screen! Great work!

Traditional stick frame building with 16" OC stud walls, 24" OC ceiling joists, and 2x6 headers over windows and doors, have a lot more wood behind the scenes for hanging pictures, securing shelving, installing ceiling fans/lights, etc. Do you find this to be much of a disadvantage with post frame construction?

I can never pass up a chance to mention that Kyle was all in love with the Milwaukee cordless framer about a year ago and cutting on Paslode for needing gas cartridges. Funny what a sponsorship will do to ones "preferences". Not hating, just noticing.
@davidj1436
@davidj1436 2 года назад
The Milwaukee is bulkier than the Paslode. I do like the tip on the Paslode, as it was pointed out, it gets into tight spots. Inevitably there will be the day you didn’t have enough cartridges with you and it cannot be used. I don’t mind pneumatic unless just doing small stuff or when you missed something and would have to drag that house through the house.
@RRBuildings
@RRBuildings 2 года назад
I am still in love with the idea… I don’t expect you to know… but I chose a partnership with paslode, because Greg and I were tired of the bulky Milwaukee. It still works great, but carrying around and using all day is not enjoyable
@darinvee4980
@darinvee4980 2 года назад
@@RRBuildings As I said, I'm not hating on you deciding the Paslode is the better everyday option. The gas cartridges are not a major issue in using the gun. I am late to the party, but I have re watched this series now twice. Love the attention to detail, and all the information you give us in these videos. I do have a question. Since your wall gurts run horizontal, and you are not using studs, how do the electricians install wall boxes for electrical, and have them come out to the drywall on external walls. Are these boxes not required to be attached to wall studs. I know they make the boxes for holding on to the drywall, but those do not seem sturdy, and more of a use in adding something to pre existing walls. Seems that you will always have wall outlets and switches on external walls, and that would make it hard for box locations, unless the electricians are adding in supports for the boxes as they go.

Hello Kyle! Thanks for all the great tips in this Barndo series. I’m designing a Barn first then build out later a studio apartment upstairs and offices downstairs for the right half of the building. This series and EVERY other video has helped me learn how to plan for this. I’m excited and a little curious how it’s all going to go when I do site prep in June and start the build in July. I’ll be buying a set of your plans and materials list to help in my design process. One ask… when you do interior walls like the upstairs of the current build… do you suggest 2x4 or 2x6? And will you do Rockwool or some other sound proofing insulation into the interior walls? Thanks for your thoughts. And shout out to Greg… your teamwork is inspiring too! Thanks! Peter

Question that's been on my mind for a few years now, after building mine. Construction basic concept is very similar to yours, minus the quality and attention to detail of course... Ya got your posts, with all the side-walls and roof structure completely anchored to the posts. Then you've got your interior walls anchored to the concrete, and also to the side-walls. Then your second floor structure is anchored to the bottom walls, side walls, and roof structure, tying the entire building together into one solid cohesive block. Except for the floating concrete slab. I know most of these builds will have in-floor heat (mine doesn't) so that will limit the problem I'm about to present, but... from a structural standpoint, what happens if/when the ground freezes under the slab? (The typical answer is "it won't" because heating, etc... but... at some point in time, Murphy's Law says "Yes, it will") So, in the event of a heavy winter storm and extended power outage, for the sake of pure argument, and the ground freezes - the concrete floor will lift, because it's a floating slab. This will, in turn, lift all the interior walls, 2nd story decking and walls, and roof structure. And put lifting pressure on the side walls, which, in turn, will try to lift the posts out of the ground. The BIG question I have is, is this a legitimate structural concern? Or is this just a case of runaway overthinking? I've got one post that has moved, in my shop, but it was also built to the lowest possible standard, I think... It was only after paying for half-assed workmanship that I made the observation that I could screw it up just as bad myself, for a LOT less money, which is when I decided to build my own home inside the shop. I know my slab has frozen several times over the years, and I don't believe that's what moved my one errant post, but it still pokes at the back of my mind. My building is sloppy as hell, with excessive flex designed into it, apparently. I've tightened it up significantly where the living quarters are at, which, presumably shifts the flex points into much tighter regions, when the ground shifts. No clue if that will cause any potential long-term problems or not, but like I said, it's always a concern in my mind. With a building that comes out of the gate tight as a drum though, will that amplify the pressures involved when that slab starts to move? Apologies if this has been addressed before, I've watched a lot of these videos though and haven't seen it - although I know I've missed a lot of 'em too, over the years...
@RRBuildings

Valid question, but have never seen any issues like that
@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews 2 года назад
Only time I have personally seen that occur is when the structure does not have a proper grade around it, or improper gutters. Some regions do have significant soil settling issues and appropriate measures need to be taken to minimize pad movement. Even in those areas every last one I have seen had the aforementioned grade and drainage problems.

38 year carpenter here; You know, it may not be that end trusses are built different, it may be that the free span trusses settle a bit once installed. 🤔 Also, end trusses are fastened to posts that further keep them from settling. I've always thought end trusses could actually be built cheaper/lighter duty, for the simple fact that they are attached to posts. The outer shape of the jig is already there, just use smaller cords. They utilize a different web pattern anyway, ya know?!?
@RRBuildings

very true. we do typically get a specific end truss...but my ends were hand framed by me on the interior based on the interior peak of the intermediate trusses...I installed my end frame straight vs. no guarantee the bottoms of my trusses were straight..
