After sitting abandoned in the trees and cut up for parts…this Dodge Charger finally gets built into what it was meant to be…a 1969 dodge Daytona track ready racecar
Chris you are living the life brother. When your not fixing someones toy charger, your building a cool toy for yourself, and at your skill level everyone watching is learning something worth knowing. Thanks for bring us along for the ride. Keep up the awesome content.
Dude... I love your work!!!! You need a shop so bad!!! I was thinking king that long before the rain, btw. I would be down for a Daytona/Superbird clone street car... 😀
You've come a long, long way, Chris. I've been with you since the first video series on Patina - remember making that frame patch on the driver's side front, over the wheel? I knew you were special back then. You're so self-taught, you do things your own way, ignoring the cries of the purists. Soon, they will come to YOU for the "new" way of doing things. I'm sure it's happened already.
I know building this stuff is your passion, I can`t believe a millionare hasn`t approached you, bought a shop, with 3 or 4 Charger jigs, and are making 68 -69 Charger bodies for 50-60k apiece, I bet you could make a 1m in the first year, but then again, I think you would be bored. your bead rolling looks fantastic, and the pentastar, through the roof. your metal skills are just insane, the adjustable leaf spring risers off the top of your head, crazy talent. You the man.
So freaking awesome! Can't wait for part 2. You do some awesome work. And I agree building race cars can be way more fun because you don't have to worry about it being accurate to factory. Just build it functional and cool looking.
I have a 71 that I’ve had since 1980, and of course I’m a Petty Fan, I came dam near doing his 71, Petty Blue and I let my old buddies talk me out of it but if I ever wanted to make a street car into a stock car it would of been The Kings 71, it was t that crazy, it was Plum Crazy, like that’s not nuts, hahaha. Do what you want it’s your wheels, Bobby Isaac’s car is bad ass, can’t wait to see it dome Chris, keep us up to date.
I was on the edge of my couch when Chris was about to name his build. Was it Richard Petty? Jack McCoy..? Who tf is that? 😂 Then I heard you wanted to paint it in ur uncle's colors. 👍 Cool 😎 That will be awesome! 1st Nascar race I ever went to was Firecracker 400 in Daytona, 1970. I was 15, so #71 car was there. 😋 This is fantastic series Chris, you da Man!
If I never peeked ahead, by the fifteen minute mark I would have thought the video would end with no car left and just a huge pile of metal on the ground. That roll cage must have been scared shitless thinking "if this is the way he treats vintage sheet metal, I dread what is going to happen to me".
Chris- I know you're not supposed to say positive things about someone's addiction, but little brother, we are all enjoying the SHIT out of your RU-vid adventures. Hi to Amanda & the tater-tot.
I would seriously consider ultra-sounding the tubes of that roll cage to make sure that the tubing does not have rusty crusty spots In making that roll cage as useful as one made from cheap Chinesiam muffler tubing. Many years ago I purchased three dirt track chassis that had been sitting behind this old boys barn for about 5 years along with a with a garage full of parts when he lost interest in racing (actually his wife forced his losing interest but that is another story);Anyway I thought I had scored big picking up the parts and what appeared to be three well built late 1980’s MonteCarlo’s that was until I started looking a little closer and noticed the bottoms of pretty much every tube in the roll cages had slight bulge in them. I the drill a small hole in the several tubes and struck rusty water. I borrowed a ultra-sound machine from a buddy who did tech inspections for NHRA and several other series/sanctioning bodies and found that the bottom 2 feet of most every piece of tubing was junk because they were all rusting from the inside out.
Good Christ ‼️ That original roll cage was , 0.120" wall thickness ??!! I do prefer , your mechanical vision for this project , Chris 🙏 I absolutely 💯 love those , Front & rear clip improvements
I got a kick out of you complaining about the .120" wall tubing. That's the lightest tubing we use in the monster truck world. Cradles are typically 2" O.D. .250" wall D.O.M. and my 4 link bars are 3" O.D. with .500" wall D.O.M. "Sheet metal" axle housings are 1/2" plate steel. It takes a lot of engineering to launch a 12,000 pound truck 20 feet in the air 40+ times in a weekend.
Chris, you don't have to guarantee perfection and time.... I been watching with cold drink and sammich near by for 4 years. I stay hungry for fast fun and foolery(3Fs from here on out) I KNOW THAT YOU GOT THIS RIGHT DOWN TO THE BROKEN WING(last race) ON THE '71 ISSACS FUN HAVER BEAST.....
Bobby Isaac was a champion in nascar He was alway's in Richard Petty's shadow. What people might not Remember is The Dukes Of Hazzard "Repo man " was the episode of How bo & luke found the Charger was on a used car sale's lot story goes it was "Richard Pettys" But (1) it's a DODGE Petty only Drove Plymouth's (2) It was #71 Bobby Issac's nascar number…. But JOE DIRT HAS TO DRIVE your car 100% Man if you could get David Spade to even look at it he has to go to Las Vegas, But as a Subscriber we will take your Joe Dirt LOL Must have a Mullet though
In around 1980 the Vallejo speedway champion was a 69 charger. I’ve been wanting to make a street legal valley sportsman car like your dads race car but out of a Plymouth valiant.
LOL "I need a shop" ... yep... a whole bunch of viewers have said it for years now... but hey better late than never! Daytona looks like it's coming along well. Keep on showing it as you go! Thanks for sharing
Looks like another channel locked in, thanks to Newbern sending me over... The way Chargers have climbed in value, I wish I had latched onto that abandoned one up in northern New Brunswick back in the 80s. It looked complete except for motor and trans. Shame. I still think about it, and looked for it but the yard was cleaned up long ago...
I love seeing the gussets and bracing...that thing is going to be tight....also Has Daisey been finished or did you sell it???? what was this car (the ISSAC Car) originally? did it have the body tag? I looked at the Mayhem car and it had a "C" in the vin for the engine, so it was a slant 6 from the factory....
Cool I always wondered why no one started this hobby of NASCAR reproduction cars. Seems like it would be pretty cool. So many cool cars ran back then compared to today were other than the skin, they are all the same chasis etc. BORING!!!!
Rather live in earthquake country than tornado country any day. Keep up the good work, just barely started watching your channel, looks pretty good minus the Cali jokes, lol.
Nothing like cooking some breakfast and drinking some Sam Adam's October fest. And watching your videos. Maybe one of these days I'll get a chance to watch you race the modified.
Patina sounds so ga...kinda like man-cave. Surface rust, call it what it is. This all started when people started having issues instead of a problem. Can you tell l'm a boomer? People say we ruined the planet, well maybe, but sure had blast doing it. Sorry, not really because you would have done the same. Love your work and enthusiasm but time fight with my dog at the vets.
Most people who pay 10,000$ for a Daytona hatch prolly don't know as much tech stuff as you do, Chris. The measurements are the same and the Vega was made by a competitor to try and make a car that could cross over with all competitors to work.....
You are an inspiration to us MoPar builders. I got a 70 R/T Charger tha I've been thinking about turning it into a winged car. Thanks for the info on the Vega hatch.
Do me a favor and ask your uncle if he has any parts for a 63 Lemans. I'm looking for a factory, air cleaner and driver side mirror. Can't find anything where I live. Thanks for posting the video. The car is going to look great when it's done.
Yes... you definitely need a shop. You could build more betters in your own shop. The yard builds are cool. But a shop would be exactly what you need. With a lift, and wall to wall tools, your own paint booth. Outside of town on a old 2 lane black top so you can test run your builds without neighbors complaining all the time. And alot of land attached to it so you can stockpile donor cars and future projects. It would be like living the dream.
Man wish I had your fab skills. I suffered a neurological emergency a few years back and it set me back on a project I was getting ready for. It's a sight unseen 70roadrunner bought in 2017. The car needs lots of work but what has me stumped is the fact that the ass end of the car wasn't properly braced up at the rear dutch panel and I have no clue how to go about getting it all squared up . The new dutch panel also appears to be too long between the quarter panels. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated .
chris ye could've looked on a Coronet rear window, because that is the exact window the used on the Daytonas. And fook it, if the Vega Rear window has the right dimensions and it looks correct, so be it.
Come to Medford Oregon I’ll trade you my fenders on my 70 charger. They are in decent shape but have some bondo on them so it’s ok to use mine for a race car!
Those welds on the cage are hella ugly 😂 and I’m no welding snob either!! I can’t wait to see what you do with this car! One of my passions is racecar chassis fabrication!
