Cool build. The whole time I kept worrying about how much it would weigh, but 120 lbs isn’t horrendous. Maybe try to make an ultralight version with included solar panel to charge an eBike for your next version?

Actually 120lbs is a lot of extra weight. It’s great to recognise this man’s can do attitude and his building skills, but actually this is an incredibly impractical use of materials to be towing behind a bicycle and the only saving grace would appear to be that he lives in a VERY flat landscape. 10 out of 10 for effort 0 out of 10 for practicality and use of lightweight design features

Dude. I just stumbled across your video, and you won't believe this, but this has been a fantasy of mine since I was at least 10 years old. I grew up on the road in a large RV (literally, never had a house) and I've traveled to 45 of 50 states, and 2 Canadian provinces before I was age 16. I'm now successful in my career and am a homeowner, unlike my parents. But I always dreamed of one day traveling the country living simply in a small bicycle camper. It's just this thrilling thought...

Looks really good! One thing that I would recommend: moving the wheels a few inches forward would help take the weight off of the hitch. As it currently rides, there's going to be a lot of stress on that hitch. If you have it closer to balanced on the wheels, it will reduce the strain; it will probably be even easier to tow as well.
@mircomuntener4643
@mircomuntener4643 2 года назад
Balancing the tongue load can be fine tuned by where you pile the heavy stuff, particularly the water. Just shift it forward or aft as needed to have a moderate tongue weight.
@Joatle
@Joatle 2 года назад
Moving wheels more to the front would also have the camper follow the bike better on tight corners, use less space ;) :) And yeah, i would have had the wheels so it was balanced when it was empty, and then just keep it balanced when it's packed :)
@Metal-Possum

All of the weight is loaded directly onto the rear axle of the bike though, so it won't behave like a car with a towbar aft of the wheels.

Awesome build. I would think a few big weight savers would be aluminum tubing instead of steel and instead of plywood you could have used foam block and then glassed it all together in a similar manner. There are Facebook groups dedicated to building campers out of foam, and they render an extremely lightweight trailer. Composites are another great option, we use them in our adventure trailer line, very strong, can't rot, won't soak up water or mildew, decent screw retention. There are some very lightweight, easy to install door options too from the RV industry...compartment doors being lighter than a small entry door, but still able to lock, watertight and VERY lightweight. What I really like about your build...you used common materials that most people can find, use and afford. Great job!!

Most aluminum is very soft most of the time, unless you want the good expensive stuff. Steel is more practical for heavy duty usage like so. Aluminum could work, but the life span and durability would be greatly reduced.

Damn Dude, you didn't miss a thing, job well done. As a fellow cyclist, absolutely agree, 1/4" or 5/16" ply would have saved a load of weight. Also using aluminium square tube instead of steel would have dropped a good bit of weight as well, that coupled with thinner plywood, you could maybe get it down closer to 70lbs - time for a V2 already ;-)

I am very impressed by your ingenuity. I, myself, have a trailer, though, much smaller. I have four very good suggestions: First, Replace all the inner-tubes with solid rubber tubes. Flats suck. Second: Replace the hitch spring with three steel chain links. You will still have full function of the hitch without the spring stretching (Yes, it will stretch very quickly). Third: Replace your seat with a "cruiser" type spring seat. Fourth and final: Add a bicycle flag to the traffic side of the rear of the trailer. All of this advice is just to add to your enjoyment, comfort, and safety. My rig weighs about the same, but, I do tent camping with stove, fuel, bedding, etc,etc...Happy trails.

21:25 "And then I realised if you ever get this stuff on anything it's impossible to get off" - Oh boy can I relate to this. Currently working on a van to campervan conversion and I was using that stuff to plug up the big holes in the wall and also so hard-to-reach voids were somewhat insulated. Never used it before, started spraying it in not realising how much it can expand and before you know it the stuff is everywhere. All over my hands, all over my shirt, shorts, the van floor and at this point I'm thinking "oh well, may as well just keep on going now". So away I go, scooping the stuff up with my bare hands from the van floor and smashing it into the holes I intended to fill. For about 20-25 minutes I was feeling really proud of myself because I was moving faster than I thought I would. I decided to take a break to have a drink and went to wipe my hands and it just didn't come off. I had a big chunk on my leg and pulled it off along with every bloody hair it came into contact with. Then I realised I had some in my beard and actual hair. Freaked out, got in the shower and the stuff just didn't want to come off unless you tore it off. 3 weeks later I still have some stuck on my fingernails that won't come off. I had to get a haircut and the clothes i wore that day had to be thrown in the bin. Lesson learned, however this is the first time I've built something that's not electrical. I could build you a computer but don't ask me to cut you a perfect size piece of wood. Every step is a learning curve for me lol I'll have nightmares of that day for the rest of my life.

Try some nail polish remover on your nails. Definitely is cool! I've seen some people with ebike camping setups. They pull out 2 solar panels and say it takes a few hours to charge fully. With an ebike, the solar panels installed on the roof, and an extra battery or two stored in the trailer, I could see this going 25-30 mph for an entire day. That could be 2-300 miles easily. Obviously that isn't ideal when you're on a bike and it would probably only be 50 miles before your back and ass were killing you sitting it, but super cool nonetheless.

I plan on using 4x8 sheets of 5.2mm Lauan board, and 1" rigid foam. Glued together using low expansion polyurethane spray foam. My local Home Depot has them. I find even 1/4" plywood to be an overkill. Build it like you did, but with much thinner layer of wood glue. Enough to provide a protective layer for the polyester epoxy and to hold the canvas tight against the foam. Polyester epoxy or casting epoxy or table epoxy, eats foam. Regular resin epoxy doesn't, but it's super expensive. Polyester epoxy is cheap. The wood glue will hold the canvas tight to the foam and also provide a protection layer of polymer, long enough for the epoxy to set and not interact with the foam. Some "table river" and casting epoxies have UV protection as well. Once the wood glue is dried, instead of painting the canvas with paint, I plan on using a cheap polyester epoxy (colored titanium oxide white), applied with a roller and allowed the canvas to soak as much epoxy as it likes, before squeegeeing the excess off. Cotton and epoxy composite, is stronger than fiberglass and epoxy believe it or not! Cotton flux and epoxy is used in structural aircraft construction. I challenge anyone to dent the canvas skin made this way with their finger nail. I built a LongEZ aircraft using fiber glass and foam, and I'll never work with fiberglass again. Even though I have yards of the stuff left. Pure cotton canvas is heavier than fiberglass, but also produces a stronger composite with epoxy. For the frame, since I don't have a welder, and find steel disgustingly heavy and overkill, I plan on using either a 1" aluminum square tubing and braze them together using aluminum brazing rods and propane torch, Or just build it using 2x3 kiln dried construction lumber painted with epoxy. Wood is nature's unbeatable construction material. Many people think it's low tech, but they would be wrong. The floor will be 1/2" epoxied plywood. If you know soldering, you know brazing. I think I can make this trailer weight under 50 lbs. !! That's the goal anyways. Love your design.

Really well built. Had concerns about the weight and possibly overbuilding of it. Double layerer of coroplast might be a interesting alternative to the ply shell. Liked the old school glued canvas, just like they used to do with boats and campers long ago. Oh and steam/heat the inside bend of the wood not the outside, the heat allows the fibers to compress allowing it to bend.
@iliketowatch.
@iliketowatch. 2 года назад
Those were exactly my thoughts -- overbuilt and heavy. With the exception of the wheels, this would probably work just fine as a motorcycle or car camper trailer. The final weight of 120 lbs does seem to be more than would be comfortable to pull with a bike, but of course this would depend on the rider. My extreme biking days are behind me...I get winded walking up the stairs. But for a young guy like Drew it seems to be the right balance between weight and sturdiness. I have seen many other bike camp trailers here on RU-vid, and using coroplast as a shell does certainly have its advantages -- it's waterproof and it's nearly weightless. But one thing I know for sure, if I was trying to sleep outside in a bike camper on a cold, wet or windy night, I'd pick Drew's design anyday. I'm glad I found Drew's channel and I can't wait to see what he's built so far.

Mr dkruitz, I have to disagree with you on the steam/heat commit. He had relieved the compression side of the bend with the saw cuts. He did exactly right heating the outside so he could 'stretch' the outside fibers of the plywood. Turned out great, don't ya think?

@@jlongmasbartholomew5724 Hi I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints and I have a question for you. Why was it necessary for God to "command" Nephi to kill Laban to get the brass plates? The information on these plates would be included on the gold plates that Joseph Smith was supposed to have translated directly from. God himself knew he would be asking Nephi to break one of the 10 Commandments "Thou shalt not kill". Nephi found Laban drunk and then was commanded to slay him and to cut off Laban's head. Book of Mormon 1 Nephi Chapter 4:7-12,15-16,18 7. Nevertheless I went forth, and as I came near unto the house of Laban I beheld a man, and he had fallen to the earth before me, for he was drunken with wine. 8. And when I came to him I found that it was Laban. 9. And I beheld his sword, and I drew it forth from the sheath thereof; and the hilt thereof was of pure gold, and the workmanship thereof was exceedingly fine, and I saw that the blade thereof was of the most precious steel. 10. And it came to pass that I was constrained by the Spirit that I should kill Laban; but I said in my heart: Never at any time have I shed the blood of man. And I shrunk and would that I might not slay him. 11. And the Spirit said unto me again: Behold the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands. ..... 12. And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me again: Slay him, for the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands; 15. Yea, and I also thought that they could not keep the commandments of the Lord according to the law of Moses, save they should have the law. 16. And I also knew that the law was engraven upon the plates of brass. 18. Therefore I did obey the voice of the Spirit, and took Laban by the hair of the head, and I smote off his head with his own sword. Why did Nephi have to commit murder? when all he had to do was just take the plates. Laban was drunk and he was in no way capable of stopping Nephi from stealing the plates. We members have recently learnt that Joseph Smith did not translate directly from the gold plates. He used the seer stone that he would place in a hat and parchment with writing would appear on the stone and then he would dictate this to a scribe. The plates remained on the table covered with a cloth through out this process, Joseph did not need the plates to do the translation. So Laban was murdered in cold blood for nothing, and God broke one of his own rules by commanding Nephi to kill Laban.

@@RoBo37enterprises Hello friend, This is 1 Nephi 4:12-17 12 And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me again: Slay him, for the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands; 13 Behold the Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief. 14 And now, when I, Nephi, had heard these words, I remembered the words of the Lord which he spake unto me in the wilderness, saying that: Inasmuch as thy seed shall keep my commandments, they shall prosper in the land of promise. 15 Yea, and I also thought that they could not keep the commandments of the Lord according to the law of Moses, save they should have the law. 16 And I also knew that the law was engraven upon the plates of brass. 17 And again, I knew that the Lord had delivered Laban into my hands for this cause-that I might obtain the records according to his commandments. One possible reason for this is because Laban committed three serious offenses against Nephi and his brothers. (1) He had falsely accused them of a capital crime (being “robbers,” 1 Nephi 3:13; Deuteronomy 19:16-19). (2) He had stolen their property, thus proving to be a robber himself (1 Nephi 3:25-26; 4:11). (3) He had not listened to the commandments of the Lord (1 Nephi 4:11; Deuteronomy 13:15).9 Thus, Nephi killed a man whom God had delivered into his hands, indicating that he was worthy of death from a divine perspective. Some killings in the Old Testament happened under similar circumstances. For example, the priest Phinehas killed Zimri and Cozbi for violating the law (Numbers 25:8). Amnon had violated his half-sister Tamar (2 Samuel 13:14-17), and his half-brother Absalom killed him because of it (v. 29). Importantly, the Spirit provided yet another rationale for the act: “It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief” (1 Nephi 4:13). The plates of Brass contained 'the law as mentioned in verses 15 and 16. The law is the law of Moses. The gold plates was the record of the Book of Mormon. The Brass plates contained the Mosaic law or the law of Moses, which contained the record of the Ten Commandments. If they did not have these plates, they would not have the commandments, and their descendants would 'dwindle and perish in unbelief'. If this occurred, then the Book of Mormon would cease to exist. If that happened, we would all be dwindling in unbelief, not knowing where to look for truth and light. I hope that answered your question my friend. I wish you well and hope that you have had or will have an amazing day.

If you had a small Jackery on your shelf, you could wall-mount a small fan, the kind that can reposition to any orientation, to help you with air flow while sleeping, and potentially reduce condensation from your breath by aiming it to push air out one of the windows. My suggestion for improvement would be to drop the axle ( by using your idea of dual-sided axle mounts) that additional 4-6" to make the frame parallel with the hitch hight. The angle its at presently puts almost all of the weight on your rear wheel, by leveling that you will greatly reduce the amount of weight on the rear wheel and should make it easier to pull, plus being lower it should be much more stable.

Very clever stuff and skillfully manufactured. With the hindsight of watching you build this; to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics, I'd make a flat trailer out of an aluminium frame and use tubes and canvas to make it into a quick-erect trailer tent. Perhaps with a plywood roof, canvas wall with a zipper door and windows and levers to keep it erected.

@neilsmith9473 Год назад
@@jlinn543 I'm really pleased that you liked my suggestion, I have no experience working with aluminium but I'm sure the know-how can be found on the web. I was think of a flatbed trailer with a light plywood roof, heavily yacht varnished and maybe even with a simple skylight. The roof could simply be mounted on four poles or maybe something a little smarter in the form of levers. Rather than paying out for canvas, it might be cheaper to reuse one or two second-hand tents to create the walls, door and any windows. I would also use smaller 20" bicycle wheels to make it easier to get in an out of the tent and store the trailer. Another idea I had was to make the base fold in half to reduce the length of the trailer when being towed - that might be impractical but it did cross my mind. A folding design might be better off with a canvas roof which could employ a ridge pole to create a slight apex to prevent pooling if it rains. Drop down supports by such a hinge mechanism would keep the trailer flat when unfolded. In fact, in theory, you could find the right-sized quick erect tent and attach the base to the unfolded trailer of the same size then simply fold the entire trailer in half for travelling and unfold it when ready to camp. That way you get to carry what you need strapped onto the top of the trailer but have the tent element almost ready to go when you make camp. The advantage is the tent is already partially unfurled and laid out when you fold open the trailer and you get to sleep above a potentially dirty, cold or wet ground surface. I guess there are many ways to approach such a design but I'm glad you agree that canvas can solve a lot of problems, however it is used. Sounds like a really great project and I wish you the best of luck with your trailer build.

Aluminium is harder to weld than steel. You'd need an evening course and a lot of practice to get to the level where you can build a trailer bed. Plus if anything breaks in the back of beyond its more likely you'll find someone with steel welding equipment. Aluminium welding requires 100% argon gas and alternating current. Steel just needs DC, more common argon/co2mix gas or flux cored wire. An arc welder will do it too. Unless you absolutely have the equipment and experience, keep it simple. You'll kick yourself I have bitter experience! Been there. I was a welder for 13 years then went to machining.

Ok that "broke a$$ mother flipper" fiberglass technique is something that I'm most definitely going to be looking into some more because that looks like it could be a very useful technique to know how to do. There's so many different projects you could use that on to save money and get a very nice looking end result. From what I've seen so far I definitely like that idea and wish I knew about it years ago!

Awesome build, looks so professional 👌 Needs a bit of interior decorating, but overall it's amazing. I keep looking at the length and thinking that's not going to be long enough to lie down in, glad to hear it's big enough for a 6'4" guy.

Really cool build. Let's call it version 0.9 😆 Within your budget i think you did awesome. I can see so many improvements, especially to keep weight down! Aluminium frame, solar on the roof, better wheels. USB fan, heater etc. But hey, you build something that works and I haven't!

Amazing. Top tip, od you want to keep closed profiles alive longer - drill a hole, weld a nut, put some used engine oil inside and screw in a bolt. Oil will float inside profiles and prevent rusting in closed profiles.

There's so much potential with this! Off-grid/bugout//stealth camper. You could hook up an alternator or something to the wheels and generate power or add a solar panel to the roof. Very neat build.

Great built, here are some pointers to make your next build even better😄 mount the whole cart the other way- more aerodynamic. remember draining holes in the metall bars so condense and sneaky water has a way to get out. Magnet + copper coils on the wheels will turn them into generators without making pedaling heavier, that way your powerbank allways stay charged, and your backlight can hook directly on so when the wheels go the traffic lighs will light. Love the sheet- poor mans carbon, but maybe use epoxy not paint, that way you can decrease your woodthicness and reduse the weight by at least 15-20% wich is allot on the total. I might have connected it with an arm to the seatbar, but i bet everyone has tons of different ideas when it comes to theese builds. But i really liked and enjoyed watching this, thnx great upload.

"Magnet + copper coils on the wheels will turn them into generators without making pedaling heavier" is against the law of physics. Anything that will generate electricity by magnet and coil will need more work.

I like your suggestions. I wondered about changing the cart the other way to make it more aerodynamic myself. Does it add more weight to the back axle? By making it the way he has it does it take some of the weight off the back axle and add it to the bike? Anyone? Comments?

Great build! My one inexperienced comment would be to have some kind of fan or ventilation at the top most portion on the inside for air movement. A small cooling fan that can be connected to your USB system would be great! I've watched a lot of build videos (plan to build a skoolie) and your soothing voice and great descriptions had me subscribe. Some people offer great advice but their voices and rhythm are horrible!

There are solar powered fans that can be used during the day and this will ventilate the cabin of any body oder from sleeping in the closed box over night. The only draw back would be keeping it from allowing water to get in. It’s designed to go on car door windows I’ve had mine now for over 20 years best $25 AUS I have ever spent as it keeps the car from getting over heated on hot days out here in the Aussie Outback.

Excellent construction work and really well thought out!. I'm preparing to build my next e-recumbent bike (FWD) but as a tilting delta trike with a rear 6'x30" cargo deck because I haul my dog and stuff all the time by bike. The idea of bike touring and wild camping seems appealing too and you're video has given me some excellent pointers for an optional cabin.

Very nice video. I like your editing the way it doesn't seem rushed. I also like the empty shop and you using your feet or a plastic table. I really don't like it when videos show somebody's completely decked out shop that has tens of thousands of dollars of tools. Makes me think I could buy a few harbor freight tools and do something like that.

That part where you trace the window and then offset the line. My father-in-law showed me that if you put peanut butter on the rim of the thing that you're trying to scribe to and then set it down gently the peanut butter leaves a really fine line on the board. This also works for electrical boxes on drywall you just put a little bit of peanut butter on each corner. It is kind of a nutty hack

For the wheel stability, consider getting wheelchair pop-off hub wheels, and weld the axle stubs connected to each other by a bar to your wheel plates. Also, if, for some reason, you repeat this build style, you can bend your trailer tongue the same way you bent your roof plywood and foam; just cut a bunch of slits, closely spaced, into your square tube, easily bend the remaining wall, then just weld the slits shut. You might also be tempted to build it out of aluminium square tube next time.

I was wondering if aluminum would be better or worse, it would be a lot lighter and so easier to pull right?

Nice build! I could see an added benefit where, depending on wheel choice, if something horrible happened when touring, you could swap a trailer wheel to the bike to keep rolling and get parts needed for a fix.

Haha even I was thinking how to hook electric motor up. Electrical hub motor I think 🤔
@jungblud59
@jungblud59 2 года назад
@@aarrontaylor1222 The only problem is, I'm not sure how it would handle with a hub motor being on one side of the trailer, maybe a brushless shaft motor with a gear and chain hooked up to the axle might ride better without putting side torque on the bike from the trailer slightly twisting to one side.
