The cold and rainy weather is reminding me that spring is right around the corner. It's not a fun reminder like sunny days in the 60's, but it is a reminder nonetheless! That means I need to get going on my projects, and project number one right now is the chicken wagon. Every chicken wagon starts off with a good base ... in our case an old wagon gear and a plan!

Look at the designs from Sheraton Park Farms, they just built a new egg mobile. Also Just a Few Acres has 2 mobile egg mobiles. Both are made from wood.

I like your plans. I personally wouldn't go with the hog panel and tarp. I would be concerned with wind. When I deck over a hay trailer I use rolled roofing or ice & water shield to protect the main beams. I like the name Daisy. We have a flower theme with our herd. And our daughter named her new doeling, is that even a word?, Daisy. Funny too, she went to Tractor Supply today and bought a purple collar for her.

I'm torn on the roof ... In my experience the wind is going to take it no matter how heavy it is because it has such a high center of gravity and is pretty big (I have one that has flipped over three times that I'm still using and one that flipped once and was done). My plan is to build some sort of out-riggers to try and keep it in place :) Do you change your calf naming theme each year? I've heard of dairy farmers doing that. Thumbs up on the purple halter ... great minds think alike :)

@@TheBeginningFarmer out-riggers. I like that. No, we keep the same flower theme. Funny story, a previous bull we had was a little short and had to jump up to finish servicing a few of our larger cows. While observing, our daughter innocently said, "Well Daddy, we'll have to name our next bull 'Johnny Jump-up'." And we did.

Well it depends, if your looking for cheep and quick then a panel and a tarp will work. But your going to be fixing it often. More pertinent and long term, cost more up front and takes more time to build. Are you using this for egg layers or freedom rangers?

I guess I wasn't thinking cheap tarp ... I actually found a good example on the Stone Barns RU-vid channel of what I was thinking of. Basically the same material that my hoop building uses. It would be tightened with ratchet straps. Also, I got to think that maybe I could use fence pipes bent into hoops instead of cattle panels if I went that direction ... I'll try to do a video showing and explaining what I'm thinking :) Oh, and the first one that I'm working on will be for the Freedom Rangers ...

Interesting, I have never tried freedom rangers, so I will be following closely. I have heard that they will go back to roost , I know the cx won't. Thats what I run.
