In this video we are going to be building a loft for a shop. We will be using 6" channel and 3" square tubing and 2" x 6" wood for the floor. We built this loft in place. We stick welded it using 3/32 7018. I will also be sharing a couple of laying out fabrication tips.

What I would have done on the c channel is cut the flange to match the pipe and you could weld out the whole top and the face. It looks like an awesome end product. That's the thing I like about metal work. It is easy to modify something with steel other than wood. If a board is too short you have to get another board. Where as with metal you can weld on more metal.

That’s why structural is unique. Cause there is so much happening on every different project and it’s usually different. Always learning

Austin when your welding to poles like that I like to cut pieces of plate that will fit the inside of the channel and you will then be ble to make to vertical welds to the back side of the channel and to the face of the pipe and they are hidden supports just an idea for next time

My dad was a welder and he told me one time if you don't learn something every day then you don't enjoy what your doing, I enjoy watching your videos

Ha! My 90-year-old dad is still welding but "Superman works alone" so I never learned to weld. 😀🤨😀

Nice, compact, one-day build Austin. The channel webs carry the shear (gravity in this case) which needs to be transferred to the columns; the channel flanges only resist bending out in the middle of the span. So, you need a direct connection between the webs and the columns. The gusset plates you used work, but if you don't have the headroom for gusset plates, a much more common solution is to simply weld a vertical plate between the channel web and the column, within the depth of the channel. In this case, you could have also flipped the channels around, so the flanges point inward, then welded the webs directly to the columns with a slot weld. And a suggestion: try using a water level for projects like this, if you can't borrow or rent a spinning laser. Once set up, a water level will give you quite accurate readings all around a space, with no awkward mark transfers or string level errors.

I really enjoy your videos, one tool that I’ve found to be invaluable in situations like this is a laser level. For building decks platforms or any layout that is intersecting distant points it is a game changer. I have a dewalt that cost me $150 a few years ago, I highly recommend you look into them. Could’ve saved you the trouble of pulling the string and having to carry the steel up the ladder to set a level line.

Out of alignment in the one corner simple fix another up right pipe to the floor welded to the pipe already there . A proper design would have a pipe under the 4 furthest corners like what you had in the middle . (Post and Beam) in case of weld failure . Carpenters use the post and beam method because nails are supposed to just hold wood in place not take weight . Post and beam works well for steel fabrication and engineers like it as well as lawyers in law suites . If your using drill stem it would bode one well to under stand post and beam construction for liability concerns . It is a great life Building stuff another good video

Unless that column was there already, you had the opportunity to have "Squared up" the project avoiding the tapered piece. It came out really nice as it is
