I’ll try a two stage separator and see if that works. I also thought of creating a baffle inside the top pail. stihl has a baffle for their air filter on their chainsaws and it really works well. The wood chips get redirected and fall back out and it never plugs up. The air filter stays very clean.

Sweet video man, keep uploading! I do power washing and my pro tip for cutting holes in tanks and buckets is this. You can cut a slightly undersized hole then heat up the plastic around it with the a heat gun or I just use a blowtorch. Then you can jam whatever pipe or barb through the plastic for a super secure fit. You can even melt some of the plastic to ensure a better seal. Just hold it in place till it cools off, you can sprinkle a bit of water on it to speed it up. Then put a little silicone or whatever gasket maker you like. Perfect for use where failure isn’t life threatening.

Thanks! I’m just figuring out what I can build that would be useful for my small shop! I like the idea for smaller holes + heat, probably should of done that! Because even with the silicone the pvc intake/outtake pipes wiggle quite a bit

I built one a couple of months ago and it’s great. I really like your idea of the inspection port. I found that planer shavings get into the shopvac bag which defeats the purpose of the cyclone. I tried a second of pipe with holes drilled into it and screen covering the pipe. It worked for a short time until the screen plugged up completely. Have you had that problem and do you have any ideas? I think the planer shavings are so light they fly up into the shopvac pipe. Before I got the planer it was perfect. In fact I vacuumed 5 gallons of sawdust as a test and nothing ended up in the shopvac. Thanks for your video.

Glad you like the video! I have same issue with bigger shavings, its mainly from them being so light. I know its an issue with most cyclone setups and people usually get a separate shop vac for them. I have also seen people attaching chip collection bags to their planar directly.

I just built secondary shaving separator that I placed inside the top pail. I used a short piece of plastic pipe to connect to the shopvac tube and a second pipe with holes drilled in it pointing down. The two pipes overlap each other inside the box. It seems to work very well so far. If you like I can send some pics.

Pictures would be great! I saw your last comment, about adding a baffle and I completely spaced about those... I will definitely try it out!

purchase a metal drum with a clip lid then a cyclone of the net one hole only required in the id and no view port you know when it is full, vac no dust mine has worked well for 5 years

I plan on doing that when I get a bigger space, but right now I'm doing smaller shop improvement projects to get me ready for the bigger projects!

I it for built cheap, quick dust control on a house renovation in another state. I have a Dust Deputy in my shop and the DP is worth the price.

The one problem with the 24’ hose is that the inside is not smooth. That causes turbulence and clogs easily.
@FabricateUnclear
@FabricateUnclear 6 месяцев назад
Figured I would just need to get a bigger hose.

Add another two buckets. stack your bottom bucket inside another bucket without modification. Then cut the bottom 3 or 4 inches off the fourth bucket and place it over the top bucket. This will reinforce the sides of the buckets and prevent them from collapsing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BeU4nqSJtBY.html

The dangerous dust is the fine dust in the air that you can't really see. Get something that can measure PPM in the air. There's no way you left the air in that room in a safe way after using that to clean.

I’m in my garage and usually have the garage door open when I use the vacuum for this reason. But even then there would be a bunch of dust, but this cut it down tremendously. I’m going to look into getting a air quality tester to double check tho! Thanks for that suggestion.

I would now dump the air outside the building unless wanting to keep the heat, largely dust free and keeps thongs safer on many levels

I built this style cyclone based on another video. I WOULD NOT BUILD THIS DESIGN AGAIN. Lessons that I learned: 1) even a small vac collapses the buckets and you need to double up both sets of buckets. 2) it is top heavy a tips over easily. Three landscape bricks in the bottom reduces the tip over but makes it heavier to move around. 3) it is not that great at filtering fine dust and my vac filters still load up. Just more slowly.

This was a proof of concept for me, before scaling it up... (smaller project = cheaper) A few things I learned: 1. The static electricity that builds up is crazy. 2. It likes to implode. 3. needs a bigger diameter /smoother hose otherwise it sounds like a banshee. I don't have the top heavy issue, I have the hose going up before bending. the fine dust is alright, I have the vacuum setup to blow out of the garage.

I built it for built cheap, quick dust control on a house renovation in another state. I was very disappointed in the performance. I have a Dust Deputy in my shop and the DP is worth the price. Your bucket collapse can be solved by making the buckets double walled. I set the bottom half in another bucket and I cut the bottom out of a bucket and put it on the top half.@@FabricateUnclear

I’ll have to try the double bucket idea(I have so many 5gal buckets), that would be super useful. I did look into getting dust deputy for a 55gal drum and might go that route later.
@rogerhodges7656
@rogerhodges7656 6 месяцев назад
The double buckets fix works. You can cut the bottom 2" or so off of the bottom bucket to keep the assembly shorter. You need to cut a similar amount off of the top bucket to clear the hose connections. Good luck.@@FabricateUnclear

WTF is 80 cubic feet of pressure? 80ft head? I effing doubt, 80 cfm?

Yeah I misspoke on that one... Happens when I'm working on stuff late at night. it is 80 CFM

WHY??? All that time,, All that money for a sloppy mess that does not work.. You have no idea of the concept of a cyclone.. 3 minutes on the internet would have shown why cyclones are designed the way they are AGAIN,,, WHY????
@FabricateUnclear
@FabricateUnclear 6 месяцев назад
I’ve always wanted to build one and I only spent $25. I’m a hands on leaner, so now I know a few more things for bigger builds! Such as the insane static electricity build up (need to ground it), needing a bigger hose, reinforce 55gal drums or get a metal one. So for $25 I learned quite a bit and had fun doing it. Yeah I could have read something online but that takes away the fun of trial and error.
@twistedhillbilly6157

@@FabricateUnclear You are completely missing the entire concept.. If you really want to build from scratch. .There are free cone layout templates online. for it to work,, it must be two separate chambers with the smallest opening between them as possible.. with the two buckets,, all you are doing is making a bigger bucket... CONE...TWO SEPERATE CHAMBERS... SMALL OPENING BETWEEN THEM.. wipe with bounce sheets to remove static

2 buckets and PVC fittings does not make this a cyclone. Don’t waste your time.

It’s just a small project before moving up to a big one. Just learning, and it does a decent job
