Today I'm installing a Rainwater Harvesting System and Chicken Watering system on the DIY Chicken Coop Project. In the video I'll show how I built a stand for the rain barrel, installed gutters, PVC piping as downspouts and I'll finish it off with the chicken waterer cups... which really is all the chickens care about! I'll also go over whats to come next in this project.....redesigned chicken feeder, plans for an electric fence and a potential future addition of goats next to the coop! Thanks to Butcher Box for sponsoring this video and please let me know if you have any questions :)

Very nice setup for your chickens! In my last house we had rain water collection and for the down spouts I had the same problem with the screens just getting clogged up. What we did was put on an angled screen , sort of a PVC box with a 45 cut at the top of it to hold the screen. Water went through fine and leaf debris slid off the 45 degree angle. If it got built up the water would wash it off basically. Seemed to work well. Thanks for sharing and I always learn something from your videos.

Yes, those actually work really well. The tank supplier I purchased my house rain tanks from sells them. But for this coop there’s not enough room for the drop aspect of it. But for the house they are pretty cool! 😀👍

In the professional food sector, it is not permitted to supply animals with collection water from roofs because viral bacteria from bird droppings on the roof can be transmitted in the rainwater.

I have on my rainwater wildlife water project. And as a matter of fact I’m getting ready to do another video on it as I recently upgraded it to 3 IBC totes from the original 1 tote setup. Approx 600 gals extra capacity. Bobcats, deer, foxes, coyotes, rabbits, bird, etc.. … except for one issue. My game cams have all stopped working and I probably won’t be able to add any new footage in this video. Might add some old clips though.

Interesting and insightful video, thanks for sharing this video. Bless Marley for wanting to add goats to your farm. Future thoughts for your seasons of hard freeze. I use an aquarium heater ($15) in the bottom of water trough with a brick flanking each side and a third brick covering the heater. In NE Ohio we have freezing temperatures for 3-4 months every winter; dogs, cats, trash pandas, birds & deer all come and drink. If you do have a solar panel that produces 12-18vdc, you can always wire a glow plug or two into a bucket or watering device for your birds. Thanks for sharing this insightful video. The stash makes you looks a bit like a young Tom Selleck; does your wife like it? Wishing you and your family a blessed week, good health, prosperous days and peaceful evenings. Peace Joe.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 2 года назад
I like the aquarium heater idea and the solar DC one as well. Yes, NE Ohio sees some vastly colder stuff than we get here. A few years ago we stayed under freezing for like 2 full days straight and people were loosing their minds🤣 As for the young Tom Selleck…I’ll take it!!! And my wife as a young girl had a crush on “magum PI” 😂. So I guess it fits! However she isn’t a huge fan of it… and I actually just buzzed it off to surprise her🤪

Another great video. The system looks pretty simple which is really nice. The gutters is really a great way to repurpose items to what you need.would love to find out how much rain that you can collect from the small roof and does it overflow into your main system if needed? Would the goats be for milk or just a nice to have on the homestead? Yes, eating eggs is one thing, butchering your chickens takes it to a new level. Do you keep a rooster around? Thanks for sharing!
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 2 года назад
Thank you Thomas! No it does not overflow into anything right now. But when I build the goat shelters and fenced in area I may have it overflow into whatever I make for their water system…. As they will likely be a little bit down slope of the chickens so I can work a couple trees within their yard. Milk is something we would like to try but in all honesty it’s likely going to be more of a fun learning project for my daughter. Perhaps we might sell any babies as a cost neutralizing aspect…. But then my daughter might mix that… as the babies are one of the cute/fun parts that she’s likely looking forward too🥰

I have some questions about the size of the gutter you chose, questions I only have because of what I learned from other videos of yours. Don't you get a lot of your rain in rare but heavy deluges? Won't those gutters be quickly overflown and direct only a small portion of the rain into the cistern?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 2 года назад
They are undersized a bit for the coop roof but the other one should be fun capacity wise. It’s more just using the pieces I have on hand that will allow for proper drop to thr pvc and then to the barrel. Bigger gutters would catch more but ultimately there is only so much that barrel will hold

Simple instructions to a relatively complicated process, especially those of us that do not have the proper tools. But, you're teaching us to fish. I'm not sure if I missed anything about the chemicals that are used in plumbing tape, sealant (I think I see the waterproof blue). Did you find a way for them to not ingest all the chemicals in their water? Or expanded PVC pipe, on a hot day, that may start to deteriorate. Great design, I'm building something similar, but with one raised roof point. Gravity does the rest.

Hi, what kind of filtering system do you use for filtering rain water before pumping in to your home?With your DYI ideas, I have installed rainwater harvesting system for my roof top water, from past 10months we have used 80000 litres of rain water, thanks a lot
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 2 года назад
I don’t do much that is very special. I let the rain tank settle out first. Then use a transfer pump with a sediment filter and pump the water over to my green tanks that are connected to my house. I will add a tiny amount of chlorine at that time. Way less than what a municipal water service would add. Then everything in thr home is just that water. But for cooking or drinking water we filter through a berkey ceramic filter. But sinks, showers, laundry, etc is just the straight ol rain water

We are actually pretty similar to you as well. Closer to Tucson but we are at 4000’ and it definitely helps to keep things cooler. We do get in the 100’s more often than you but not extreme. As for misters, no. But plenty of shade… under the coop, the shade roof in the run and also the position of the coop is between two trees so it gets plenty of shade as well😎👍

I've enjoyed and learned a lot from many of your videos over the past several years. Thank you for providing them. Because RU-vid censors people and supports a false and harmful narrative, I am exiting their platform and therefore unsubscribing. Perhaps your videos will be available on a platform I visit in the future.

I have the same concerns as you regarding censorship…. Especially in the last 20 months. Currently my videos are mirrored on odysee.com. Basically a block chain version of YT. Additionally I plan to add them in other places as well…. gab, rrumble, and whatever other places I can find😀👍

Off topic but what's the meaning of symbol in your shirt at the start of the video? I know the "thin blue line" flag, but that one with a red line intrigued me Btw, nice video as always
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 2 года назад
It’s the fire service Maltese cross….. and the red line is for the fire service. Same as the blue line for law enforcement or green line for military😀👍

The water pressure just comes from the gravity from barrel right? ..
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
Yep, just elevation pressure. You get .434 psi for every foot of elevation difference from the top of the water level to the outlet below😊👍

Anyone found a good water-proofer + Paint mix????? Ordered A wooden coop I still have to build, it'd be nice if the rain didn't rot out the coop in 1 year.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 2 года назад
I’d recommend researching a boiled linseed oil and/or urethane and thinner mix. Some teardrop forums refer to it as “the mix” you thin the polyurethane or linseed oil with thinner to allow it to soak in more. Then progressively with each coat thin it less and less until full strength
