Happy holidays everyone! I've finally managed to finish this sound booth project - and what a trip it's been! The internals are ready, sound is isolated and all the equipment is installed.
You can pick up the Rode AI-1 kit I used in this video at Amazon (affiliate link):
Rode AI-1 - amzn.to/2HSZfqQ
This video is not sponsored by any company.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Besides giving you a tour of of the finished "acoustic chamber", I've also included the segment when I present my SO with her Christmas gift, and she sees the completed booth for the first time.
We're also going to unbox our new mic setup - a Rode NT1 and AI-1 complete home studio kit, after which we'll have a small sound test... And to top it all off we'll set off some Christmas fireworks as well!
Quite a bit to cram into one video, so I hope you enjoy the (rather long) result.
As for the Booth specs, here is a list of materials used (the 3d model is available in part 1 of this video series):
Synthetic Glass (50*100*4 mm) x1
Noise blocking Tape (12000*30*2mm) x1
Noise Blocking "putty" acoustic mats (600*500*2mm) x20
Plywood (1525*1525*10mm) x15
Acoustic sealant 290ml x3
Acoustic mineral fiber insulation panels (1250*600*50mm) x15
Timber (5*5*200 cm) x30
The total DIY construction cost came out to roughly $760 usd, far below what a similar unit would have cost me pre-built.
Thank you very much for watching! If you have any ideas on what you'd like me to film in Russia, let me know!
In this video we sing bits from the following songs:
Vivo per Lei, Strangers in the Night, Santa Claus is coming to Town, and Let it snow.
Shot in 4K on Sony Rx10 M3 and DJI Osmo Pocket
Not gonna lie, I expected hobbyist voices, and just a really cool Christmas present, but When you guys got to the singing I was wildly impressed. This booth wasn't a gift, it was a necessity. You guys have the kind of voices that need that quality atmosphere. This was such a dope project. Good job friend. Good job.
Dear GlintGamer, I wish it was possible to send positive vibes that could actually brighten your day the way your comment has brightened ours :) We are definitely no where near talented enough to consider this as anything more than a hobby, though we do love singing together quite a bit! Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words, it's so wonderfully surprising that anyone would take the time to compliment complete strangers, especially so with such honest kindness! What an incredible labor of love! I don't think I would have been able to restrain my excitement to receive such a gift! I don't know if I have the skills necessary to make this particular booth but I will definitely use many of the ideas you shared. $600 for a beautiful studio like yours is cheap compared to the booths I've seen for $5000 that don't come close to the one you made. I love the simple ventilation system because I do want to breath. Both you and your wife have beautiful voices. I appreciate the video and the positive encouragement as I embark on my new journey of recording. Much appreciated!
@@NormalDayRussia You're very welcome. I took a look at your other videos and would you believe it, I took my first visit to Russia in Christmas 2019....the year the snow didn't fall! Spent 8 days in St Petersberg (Nevsky Prospect) and 8 days in Moscow (Garden Ring Hotel). The closest I came to snow was ice-skating in Gorky Park on Dec 25th. Nonetheless it was a fab holiday and a beautiful country. Went to the ballet, the opera, space museum, Dostoevsky museum, Faberge museum, Kremlin, a gazillion churches m, and walked many, many miles. Loved it!
Incredible job! One of the best videos I have come across for this. I am planning to design a very similar design to yours this week! A few questions of you could, would your booth fit a guitar? Also did you consider internal frequencies when you designed specific to vocals ? Amazing voices by the way 👍🏼👍🏼
@NormalDayRussia
@NormalDayRussia 5 лет назад
Hi Jack! Thanks for the high praise, we're flattered :) I have to be honest and tell you that there was 0% scientific proof behind the build concept - I didnt think about resonance or frequencies at all. I just intuitively knew that I would need several materials with various densities to stop low and high frequency noise. I'm happy with it sound wise, so the materials seem to have been a good fit. As far as my guitar is concerned, it does fit! Though for complete 360° comfort and freedom with a large guitar I would recomment making your booth maybe 15cm larger in both axes.
what would you recomend on doing to keep the pc fan noise down to a minimal for recording your vocals if you dont have a vocal booth?
@NormalDayRussia
@NormalDayRussia 5 лет назад
@@joeyp6674 Well, if you're willing to do a little bit of DIY, you could build a screen or reflection filter strictly around your microphone, which would slightly limit the amount of ambient noise being picked up. Dont purchase any all-foam solutions. A screen is not very effective in general, and an all-foam construction makes it entirely useless, as foam doesn't "stop" noise. You'll need a dense material as a base (acoustic board, gypsum/drywall backer board), and foam over that. You can find examples of mic screens online, but they will only be so effective at cutting off a bit of noise if placed between your mic and the source of ambient noise (the fans, in your case) the room will still reverberate said noise, but you might get it down to a more manageable level where a highpass filter could get rid of the hum. Depending on the fan, you might also be able to filter out a narrow frequency, corresponding to their hum. Another solution would be to invest in much quieter fans (there are some nearly silent pc fans out there, I personally like Noctua's offerings).
Are you going to later run the microphone out to the computer for recording? You could always set up a machine in-booth with a multitrack studio and record anything you like in there. Or I guess, run the mic. lines out from the booth to whatever machine you want in the office space and record. I used to use Magix Samplitude pro or Producer and it is a wonderful DAW studio. I liked it a lot better than Cakewalk or whatever. It even has a mastering studio built-in, it's fantastic. Also, some really good powered monitors would complete this gorgeous room! That mic sounds damned good.
@NormalDayRussia
@NormalDayRussia 5 лет назад
Right now we have a pretty basic setup, I have outlets in the booth, but havent added any equipment besides the Rode mic. The cable from it runs through an opening I made just for this purpose and straight to the AI-1 on my desk, which is connected to my PC. If we get around to recording guitar, I may switch things around a bit in the future.
The booth looks really professional and better than the competition in Russia. Great job! Have you measured with some volume measuring app how many dBs the booth reduces?
@NormalDayRussia
@NormalDayRussia 3 года назад
Dear Zaur, Thanks a lot! I didn't use a professional decibel meter, just my phones microphone. So the exact decibel values I measured are useless. However, the difference in the measured values speaks volumes - there is a drastic difference in resonance, and audible background notice inside and outside the booth. But you don't really need any equipment, when you go inside the booth it "feels" even uncomfortably quiet. And speaking inside is weird too, because there's no echo to your voice.
@NormalDayRussia
@NormalDayRussia 5 лет назад
Hello again, Mopsie! nothing would make me happier than if these clips end up helping a couple people get motivated to build their own acoustic space! As for the recordings, yes, we did record these songs ourselves, we went through about ten of our favorite songs and just cut out the segments that sounded best. It's much easier to put out a "good sounding" result when sharing just fragments, the entire recordings from start to finish dont have nearly the same quality to them. I'm very happy with the mic and the acoustic space, but for now my own editing skills are the limiting factor. Before this video, we had never recorded any vocals - though we do occasionally sing at family outings and, previously, at concerts at UNI when we were younger 😊 Now we're slowly starting to build up a personal library of recordings, the bulk of which happen to be lullabies for our kids 😂
@Mopsie
Normal Day in Russia very cool, I suggest you look into compression and EQ. You can do allot to improve the sound when you know these tools. Some presets can even do allot. Although it’s always beter to listen to your recordings and tweak it yourself. As every recording is unique. Is there a way I can contact you, I can sent you my SoundCloud. This RU-vid account is a very old account which I only use to browse RU-vid. So none of my music is on this channel.
A very nice job !!! congratulations!! but what I have not heard is how loud is the sounds outside the cabin ? I'm also interested to building an acoustic cabin, almost the same as yours, that I can record my guitars and voices in a block apartment try not to disturbing my neighbors.That's why I'm interested to hear how much noise comes out of the cabin.If you can do a demonstration while playing the voice or a guitar inside the cabin and record the sound outside the cabin with a video camera ,that would be grateful and thank you in advance for that !!! In any case, you have wonderful voices !!!
@NormalDayRussia
@NormalDayRussia 5 лет назад
Hello, Larry! Thank you for your comment. Regarding noise pollution from inside the booth into adjacent rooms - there is none. Inside our workspace, right near the booth it sounds like someone is listening to music in loud headphones - when we sing or play guitar in the booth. As you can imagine, this headphone-like sound doesn't travel well through walls, and with a closed (wooden) door there is 0 noise pollution from the booth to adjacent rooms. We do have thick walls though, so if you're surrounded by dorm like paper thin walls some sound might still bleed through, but it would still be very faint. Lets say 90% quieter than just playing in your room without the booth.
