I put this video together about a year ago when Coronavirus lockdown had just begun and I had time to tackle a large project. I’m glad the months following gave me something to enjoy and I've even released my first single ‘Window Shop’ where vocals were fully recorded inside: • Serene - Window Shop (... So if you’re itching to block off a section of your own room for uninhibited jamming, feel free to ask any questions in the comments section and I’ll answer as best as I can.
If you’re not willing to do as much construction, I’d still advise spending at least several spread out days doing your homework to make the most educated decisions about what you personally need in a booth. For me, the three things that I knew I NEEDED in a booth were:
1. A comfortable, relatively quiet practice space where I’d have the liberty to strum and sing at a natural level without neighbors or family members tossing and turning from my noise. I didn’t need it to be a completely soundproof box like a studio recording booth would need to be, but I wanted to feel like I could completely go into my own world if I every felt inspired.
2. A booth that would not overcrowd my other furniture or weigh too much for the floor to handle. I have a queen bed and a desk that are essential components to my room, so I needed both those things AND the booth to fit comfortably. I also opted for plywood as the wall material over cheaper, heavier alternatives since my room is upstairs.
3. A non-echoey atmosphere once inside the booth. There’s no question that an untreated 4X4 room will reflect sound waves all over the place. I wanted to have the ability to record clean demos, voiceovers, and videos with ease.
PRODUCTS MENTIONED:
Acoustic Blankets from ‘Vocal Booth To Go’ - $46.62 each (I got three, so the total with tax and shipping was $155) Black, Size 80×80 inches, Weight 9 - 10 lbs

02:27 - 07:26, was shot on my iPhone 11, stabilized on a DJI Osmo Mobile 3 - $99
www.dji.com/osmo-mobile-3
OTHER DETAILS:
1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood for the walls
2X3 framing for all walls and base
2X6 framing for the outer rim of the base
ROCKWOOL SAFE’n’SOUND insulation inside the walls (wear gloves and a mask!!!)
Closer to 1 inch particle board for the base/flooring (it’s strong!)
We used scrap wood for all the window framing
Two layers of glass per window, spaced about 2 inched apart (small sheets of glass alone are only a few bucks each, just be careful when handling!)
Sealed the glass in the window frames with white silicone
For the ceiling we used fencing just because… it was an idea… and fencing is cheap, haha!
Foam weather seal comes with a sticky side on the back so it’s quite easy to install and there were various size and color options
Overall, we used nails at first, but switched to screws pretty early on because they get a better bite
I was lucky enough to use a huge tub of high quality paint from my dad’s work. Super easy to clean!

Great job! So glad that the booth is meeting your needs. It looked like your dad was trying to keep his face away from the camera during the time lapse (how cool is he!? - wants his daughter to be the focus, not him), but he deserves to be recognized and I'm so glad that you did that. I'm speaking as a dad and a grandfather.

Hello Serene! This video is SO Inspiring. I really want a nice looking, high quality booth but am having trouble getting behind the price tag that is included with some of the booths on the market. This booth looks fantastic, and it was very inspiring watching you and your dad put it together. Thank you so much or making this video! Also, window shop sounds great! Awesome song

I appreciate it! That’s exactly why I was interested in making a booth-the cost to buy outright is crazy. I have some music friends that totally skipped constructing walls and just built a frame with thick blankets hanging from the sides and even that’s pretty effective. My songs “California Sky,” “Buckle Up,” “Next To You,” and “I Won’t Do It” were all recorded that way, in a garage. It was basically a blanket booth. Anyways, I hope you find a solution that works for you-thanks again for the view and thoughtful comment. :)

@@mypenandpick Hi got a question so if i want to record my shouting music in a diy vocal booth that means no one can hear me when I have the foam around it
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 2 года назад
@@chris-hv2ro I have never used foam, before but I know that many people have great results with that. Many of my musician friends prefer using foam, but the other half prefer blankets like me--so it's hard for me to articulate which is better. I can speak to how my booth and blankets really do wonders for shouting vocals. I could record a shouting track in the middle of the night when everyone is sleeping and no one would wake up. Because I've done it, haha! So I hope that helps--let me know! :)

Watched your video to get some ideas on building a dedicated recording booth for vocals and single instruments such as guitar, brass etc. (I just check out some of your songs - great stuff. Keep recording original music and lyrics. I live in Australia, and the number of musicians and artists that are recording in their home studios has been growing by the day. Cheers)

Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos and for replying thoughtfully-your words are definitely encouraging. Yes, the music industry seems to be changing rapidly with the ability for anyone out there to self-make everything about their career as an artist… And honestly the gift of more time along with the limitations of COVID forced so many people to figure out how to still collaborate (that’s how most of my songs were produced). So anyways, that’s great to get your insight from across the globe-stay well!

@@mypenandpick Serena is a feminine given name. It is derived from the Latin word serēnus, meaning "clear, tranquil, serene". This name was borne by an obscure early saint, Saint Serena of Rome. as a girls' name is pronounced sir-EEN-ah. It is of Greek origin, and the meaning of Sirena is "enchanter". In Greek mythology, the sirens were half-woman, half-bird creatures who, by their irresistable singing, lured seamen to their doom. Keep singing

This is actually pretty impressive. Are you recording in this or is it just to keep the noise from disturbing everyone else in the house. Small boxy sound booths are tricky because you risk the vocal sounding too “boxy” so you have to do some things to be sure that that doesn’t happen. (Base traps, etc. ). Loved your video.
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 7 месяцев назад

Looks great, but I'm guessing your biggest weak point is the door by far (both it not having enough mass and not having a sufficiently air tight seal). I suppose it would depend on how much weight your hinges can handle (or just get new ones) but based on the fact that the rest of your booth is well-made, I'd expect beefing up the door to make a huge difference.

@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 2 года назад
It doesn't get very hot, but I also live in a climate that stays in comfortable temperatures year-round. If it ever does get stuffy I take a 5 min break leaving the booth door open--maybe running my AC unit, too--and then I'm back at it. :)
@nexxxgen817
@nexxxgen817 2 года назад
Hi your recording booth looks amazing, I just have a question about what you used for your ventilation system?
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 2 года назад
Nothing really... I just take breaks in between takes as necessary. I prefer it that way because--I'm sure you know--once you get fixated on a project you can go go go for hours, but music-making needs breaks. If it gets stuffy, it forces to to go out, take a quick walk, or grab a snack and I always feel better coming back in. I do leave the door open sometimes when I go to work so that the whole booth has the day to breathe. I also have air conditioning so if I leave that on as well as the booth door open for a few minutes, the cool air circulates pretty efficiently.

Check this out: I also bought myself a $100 Gazebo / Pergola (200cm x 200cm) and placed it in my basement on a noise absorbing rug. I left the outside "walls" off and placed moving blankets on all five sides. Got myself a 10M led strip for the inside and some bass traps in the corners and foam on the inside off the blankets. Super easy set-up for recording with my D18 and singing at the same time straight into my iPhone using the Roland Go Pro mix. Call me cheap but I just love my little "tent" inside my basement. Could you also show us how you did to conect your ring light in the electricity outside? Is there any output and input of electricity?
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 2 года назад
Thank you for watching! Yes, it’s 4x4 feet and about 8 feet tall. As far as electricity goes, I got a 6 outlet surge protector that hides under the tabletop of the little black corner table shown in the video-that surge protector is connected to an extension cord that’s fed up that same corner through the ceiling of the booth, and drapes on the outside where it’s connected to power in my room. Since the ring light and my laptop are usually the only things plugged in, it’s not a crazy amount of wattage that I have to worry about. Hope that helps! You may actually be able to see the extension cord in the video; just hiding behind everything. :)

@@mypenandpick thanks! another question: the blankets came like this in a "curtain" format or did you sew and customed it yourself? Because I noticed on the website that most of them have holes to install with hooks in the walls.
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 2 года назад
@@raquelantunes I got the most plain ones possible, without grommets/eyelets. BUT in my case, even if I bought the ones with grommets/eyelets I would have still had to cut it down to size and then sew the ends closed to prevent fraying and such. I wanted my curtains to lay flat against the wall, and not have the alternating bumps that curtains with holes tend to show... So that's why it was inevitable that I'd be customizing mine anyways. Hope that helps answer your question!

I am impressed with how quiet it was when you left the room does it also help prevent noises outside your room from interfering with your recordings?
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 3 года назад
Good question! It does very well, yes. My family has watched TV downstairs at a normal volume that you’d set for movie night and I can’t hear them. In fact, I purposefully have to bring my phone into the booth because if they call my name and I don’t hear, they know to text me. One thing I do have to make sure of is that our washer or dryer isn’t on while I record but that’s just because it’s directly below me downstairs and our house isn’t huge. Generally I feel like I can escape to my booth and record at any given hour of the day and produce clean sounds/vocals that’d be good enough for a studio song. Hope that helps!

Hi Ms. Serene! I'm just curious about the air ventilation of the booth? I'm planning to build my own sooner and I'm from the Philippines which is a tropical country.
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 2 года назад
Hello! I would definitely invest in a ventilation system for your booth. I'm blessed to live in California, so the weather is--for the most part--very consistent throughout the year. When it gets too stuffy, I open the door and take a 5 minute break and I'm good to go again, but for your country I really think it'd be a worthwhile investment to get a fan or air conditioning. I have never been to the Philippines, but I have spent some summers in tropical places like Taiwan and Malaysia. Coming from someone who actually likes humid weather, I don't think I'd enjoy practicing and recording in a non-ventilated booth. So I hope that brings some perspective, thanks for viewing, and best to you and your build!

Hey looks good. Did you add any insulation between the walls? Or is it basically thick wooden walls with fabric on the inside?
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 3 года назад
Thank you! I did add insulation between the walls, yes. Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound is what I went with-I used one whole bag of it and had to purchase one more just because I needed to finish up half a wall or something. I debated on spending all that money on another bag that I knew I only needed a little bit from, but ended up biting the bullet. Gave the rest away on Craigslist and it went in about a day, so I’d suggest scouring the internet first to see if there’s any spare insulation out there since my extra material was snagged so fast.

how about the ventilator? do you installed a fan or air conditioner, or just opened the door every few minutes?
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 3 года назад
I do not have a ventilator built into the booth, but I do have an air conditioner built right next to the booth’s exterior that helps circulate cold air throughout my actual room when need be. Plus, I happen to live in a climate that doesn’t get unbearably hot often so for a majority of the year I’m good to go. (I also like how my setup forces me to take breaks when it feels too stuffy after awhile).

Great tutorial. Really looking forward to making one of these for myself soon. You may have seen them already, but there are some tutorials on here for making rockwool sound absorption panels that are super cheap and would take down reflection even more if you added some along with your sound blankets.

@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 3 года назад
Hey! From start to finish it was done in a month, but factoring in days off-I’d say it took me roughly two weeks of work. Like if I were to clock in and out of an all day job, it’d be a two week job. It was created at the start of the shutdown so I worked on it when I felt like it and there were some tasks that took me longer when I didn’t have my Dad’s help. Thanks for asking!

@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 2 года назад
Hmmm. Particle board is cheaper than plywood, but heavier. Since my room is on the second story, I opted for plywood after buying a whole bunch of particle board because I didn't want my booth crashing through the ceiling of the first floor. It's hard to say an exact cost, but between $100-$200 during the time I made this. (With shortages on lumber, it's way more expensive at this time--that's why it's so hard for me to gauge.)

@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 2 года назад
Great question--I don't love the noise, that's for sure. I have the 16" Macbook Pro and when I've got my DAW open the fan can get noisy. At first I was discouraged, but my problems were quite easily solved when I bought a knockoff version of the Kaotica eyeball for my condenser mic (Mine is the Alctron brand). It helps loads for clean vocals. Hope that helps! :)

@HOLLASOUNDS 2 года назад
Laptop speakers in no way represent the frequency of human voice or guitar. The only way to actually show how much the sound is reduced is with some one singing and playing inside. Also the walls are sound proofed but the roof is not. Why didn't you build the roof the same as the walls?
@mypenandpick

You mention 48” x 48” dimensions. But my acoustic guitar is 42”. Have you tried to ise an acoustic guitar in your booth, and do you think 48” is enough? Or should I go to 50 or 52. Ideally, I’d like to save all the space I can, but it seems a little tight for acoustic guitar

I play just fine with my full-sized acoustic, but I myself am also small so I don't know if I'm the best judge for how comfortable it'd be. I personally have no issues, it never crosses my mind that I'm bumping into things if that gives an idea.

My room is also 10x10. Next to my booth I have a queen size bed that fits just right and on the other side of my booth I have a desk-not sure of the dimensions off the top of my head right now, but it’s a decent sized desk (it’s the bamboo table top from IKEA; they’ve sold it for years as a part of the customizable desk options). I’m still comfortable and would definitely recommend if you’re considering it. Hope that helps!

howd you get the booth insde your room was everything small enough to fit through the door or sum
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 2 года назад
My room is so small in general that you're right, height of the walls of the booth was important for me to calculate before even starting. Since there are 6 pieces of the build, we carried each piece upstairs individually and then assembled them when they were in my room. Each wall is about 8 feet tall, which was just enough to clear the ceiling when being tipped from horizontal to vertical when carrying into the doorway and installing. So if you're like me and have a small room, just be sure that the diagonal measurement of your wall does not exceed the height of the walls of your room and you'll be good. :)

@CFox.7
@CFox.7 3 года назад
Unless you put some high density foam between the plywood and the acoustic blankets you are going to get boomy lower mids due to partial reflection. Oh and the sound demonstration.. you are playing back through laptop speakers ? Those things are not full range so ofc the viewer aint gonna hear any low frequencies coming through ;)
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 3 года назад
Perfect sound quality is not what I’m chasing down. The booth has been performing well for my purposes, the primary one being a space for me to strum and sing while my family sleeps. If I ever need to record flawless vocals with no boomy lower mids I will consult with a professional to record with him/her. Thanks!

hello is this works as acoustic and sound proofing well
@mypenandpick
@mypenandpick 2 года назад
I would say the cotton blankets help treat the noise (sound absorbing) and the walls themselves with the Rockwool insulation help reduce the noise, both in and out (sound proofing). Before I put the cotton blankets in, it was VERY echoey inside so that's how I know the blankets make a huge difference in sound treatment. However, I advocate for finding solutions that are cost-efficient and effective enough for the job. Blankets alone can aid in sound proofing AND sound absorption because I've also tried that method with my producer friend. We were able to track clean vocals with just blankets in his garage--see my songs California Sky, Buckle Up, Next To You, and I Won't Do It. The songs recorded in my booth are Window Shop, Orphan Train Riders, and Solo. Hope that helps! :)
