How I built a huge 12.5' conference table for Gary Vee's new LA office. I linked up with Urbn Timber to create a Live Edge table top from ash slabs, then welded up a base from 1/4" plate steel. Thanks to Bernzomatic for sponsoring this video, be sure and check out all the links below!

We kept finding we needed a folding table. This is so easy to store. ru-vid.comUgkxStL0QRChBju4aQlnTrRgBZvafFog0KU3 Opening and closing is easy as well. It has a great handle for carrying around the house. Its pretty lightweight and slides around easy. We bought it for our daughter’s first sleepover. Breakfast was a blur - but 12 7-8 year olds fit at the table with room to spare. We used it at thanksgiving and 6 adults fit comfortably on each side plus 2 on either end for a total of 8. Super easy to clean up afterwards as well.

The slabs are are gorgeous, but man I love that steel base. Gives the piece a super sleek, modern, but industrial vibe. Well done!
@kareldc2
@kareldc2 6 лет назад
Cool but you fixed the wood directly on the base with screws that are fixed and can't move as the wood expands and contracts. You need to compensate with oval srew holes, otherwise the screws will crack or the top.
@zaneh6224
@zaneh6224 6 лет назад
Correct, especially on a table of this size, this is the difference between DIY and professional, DIY doesn't understand the finer points of timber and the importance of executing these small details correctly.
@neoxochitl
@neoxochitl 5 лет назад
@@zaneh6224, Can I please ask you to further explain? So the holes themselves have to be oval or special screws? Where can I buy them if possible?
@zaneh6224
@zaneh6224 5 лет назад
@@neoxochitl The holes in the base connection plates need to be oval shaped, this allows the fixing screws to move along the oval slightly when the wood want's to expand / contract
@reidsimonson
@reidsimonson 5 лет назад
Zane H could you just drill larger circular holes? Or I suppose the oval screw holes keep the top sturdy so it doesn’t move but allows for expansion.

Great looking table top, but don't understand why another company did the majority of the work on the top. The bottom looks unfinished, like you didn't have the right equipment to finish it. Although it was a clever solution for someone with no welding skills.

Get a gas welder and use c 25 gas. You will have far less spray and your welds will look really smooth. Stop at your local welding supply shop and they can point you the right direction.

you should think about doing petinas on your steel bases. uses acids, salts, and heat to achieve different colors & patterns. its a lot of work but worth it. sculptnouveau.com/

One thing I would suggest people do is buy a MAP Gas torch rather than a propane torch. It also works with propane so if you ever need a higher temperature you can use MAP gas you won't have to buy another torch.

Your welds look a tad cold there. Don’t be afraid to rip the hell out of steel that thick. Also when you’re verticals like that make sure you weld UP the seams. That way you have control over how fast you move your puddle. Might not matter on a small bracket like that but longer beads it will help a ton
@JohnMadeit

Looks good Mike. Have you tried mig welding with a gas setup?
@ModernBuilds

I have.. it definitly is a little cleaner and easier, but not worth it to me if You're not welding all the time. It's a lot more expensive and you have to deal with gas.. I've got enough gas as it is lol
