Building a Homemade LAMB FEEDER. Forget the bottles!

This video is about the problems encountered during lambing with orphan lambs that require continual feeding when time is scarce on the sheep farm.
This time saver is a homemade machine which is relatively cheap to manufacture that cuts the workload with feeding these pet or cade lambs.
The major downside to this machine is that feeding these lambs is so easy, it is much easier to keep and rear them which will lead to a big milk replacer bill.....

Your cup also solved the problem of the greedier lambs knocking the other lambs off the teat. I used to put warm milk into a pail inside a bigger bucket with a lid to keep any contaminants out, that I drilled holes in to take the feed tubes situated outside the pen and fed to a teat board attached to the pen. Since the lamb replacer contains cereal grains, I found that keeping the milk warm, ( I mixed it warm and allowed it to cool down whilst in use) caused it to ferment. Your system is just the job to prevent that. The feed companies want you to feed warm to use more product but my lambs fed little and often regardless of temperature once they knew what to do. and it took 10 kg of replacer to rear a good lamb on 5 weeks weaning onto creep. Being an ex nurse I was quite fussy about cleaning the pipes frequently. I like the man way to mix, I used a big hand whisk and of course it mixes easier warm. Impressed with you inventiveness. We call them Mollie lambs here in Wales and yes they never were profitable but we felt obliged to rear them well. I think you have a super set up in your shed. I am thinking a slick version of your invention could be a marketing possibility, especially for colder climes.

Hi I thought if it would be good idea that you would insulate plywood box with polystyrene from inside to prevent heat loss,box would be bigger of the thickness of polystyrene and everything would fit inside as you have.I thank to algorytm that show me your channel😁I watch many farmers channels I'm farmer myself and I learned a lot from you guys👍good luck with lambing.

Great job and interesting to see someone else's take on a homemade feeder. I made up something along the same lines last year. The main difference is that I mix the replacer warm every morning and evening and drop a bucket of it into a bigger bucket (that's full of water being kept warm by a similar heater to yours) They feed ad lib at full temp for about 10 days and then I gradually reduce the temp. I'm only small time, but it fed 9 lambs last year .
@sheepschool365
@sheepschool365 Год назад
If you can avoid bottle feeding 9 lambs it's a good machine..👌

Hello, Just discover your channel! I feed plenty of pet lambs every year and was wondering, where do you get the cups for the grey lamb teat fixtures please, as I've never seen them! I have the same problem with lambs chewing and destroying the teats as they get older. Many thanks.

Hey does the milk go thick in the tubes? Iv got something very similar that I made but the milk replacer seems to go thick over night or when the lambs don’t use it for long periods of time. Thanks
@sheepschool365
@sheepschool365 11 месяцев назад
No problem with that at all. I have noticed some milk replacers have a lot of solids/sediment that settles out to the bottom. Could be worth trying a different brand of milk powder.

Generally only see scour in lambs that don't get enough colostrum, not very often. Don't mind seeing that yellow sticky stuff. Think it's a sign they are getting well fed....👍

Is it impossible to milk a U that has lost her lamb or something to replace the milk replacer?
@sheepschool365

Always try to foster a lamb onto any ewe that lost her lamb and leave the milking to the lamb...👌

Would the one coil do the three or do you need separate 🤔
@sheepschool365
@sheepschool365 5 месяцев назад
Ideally one coil per teat for 2 reasons. Firstly, the coil will not transfer enough heat to lambs feeding at once. Secondly, if only one lamb is sucking, air can backfeed from one of the other teats. Hope this makes sense?

Hi Michael, busy lambing... Bought them over a a year ago and can't remember but I'll try and find the receipt. Move lambs over to cold teat at about 10 days when they are thriving well.

@@sheepschool365 Moved my 2 pet lambs over to cold milk at the weekend and they are happy on it, plan to move them onto ad-lib later this next week. They are Leicester lambs & are going to be too old to adopt on when the horned ewes start lambing at the end of the month, try not to have pet lambs but these 2 will probably be kept for breeding.
