Hey friends,
Almost exactly one year ago I started to plan the switch from my DAWless to a hybrid music making setup. One year is a decent time to make a little recap of working hybrid and looking at the pros and cons that come along with the setup.
Hope this video is helpful for you if you consider a hybrid setup or thinking about re-structuring your music making setup in general.

Started with hardware and hardware sequencers a few years back and decided to move more in the box with Ableton this year. There is so much to learn, tweak and fix - Midi clock, mixing/audio routing, latency, monitoring, etc - you need a solution or way to avoid them. If like me you started DAWless, i highly recommend turning off all hardware for a few weeks and just learning a DAW in isolation (with a midi keyboard maybe) and then gradually introduce the hardware bit by bit. Am happy i did it as my output is improving but sheeesh, it's been a struggle.

Hey Jon, I definitely know what you mean - it really is a lot to figure out. I already had experience with Ableton before working DAWless and then switching to hybrid. Still a lot to figure out though. But once you get the setup going it opens a lot of great options. Congrats on your improving output, keep on pushing!

Hi Miles! Thanks for the very good video. I agree with the advantages of a hybrid setup (and the cons...). May i ask you which interface you use? And second: why don't you use a mixer (a analog or a dj mixer) Keep up the good work!!

Thanks a lot Willem! I’m using the Arturia Audiofuse Studio and am very happy with it. And I don’t use a DJ mixer mainly for portability reasons as I want my setup to be as compact as possible. That was One of the main reasons I upgraded to the Push 3, because it already has a build in interface - no need to bring my interface anymore. :)

Great insights miles! I ended up with the same conclusion, hybrid is the best option. Right now I'm thinking to add a polysynth with a keyboard that I can play live together with my syntakt, and then ableton for samples and live looping.

This sounds like a really nice setup! Pretty similar to mine, although I don't have a polysynth but the Moog Sub 25 is also really nice for playing synth lines live. :)

Thanks Miles. That was very thoughtful and clear. 👌 For me, the question I am thinking about is “enjoyment” factor. I really enjoy working with instruments, but I cannot dispute that my tracks sound better coming from the DAW. So then I guess it’s about the goal: because good production is important for distribution. But enjoying the process doesn’t necessarily lead to great production. And great production doesn’t necessarily mean the song is any good, either. 😂 🤷‍♂️

Definitely see the struggle and that was also one of my biggest hold backs going hybrid: I was afraid that it would feel like actual work again. But actually the mix of hands on instruments and DAW is the perfect blend for me between joyful music making and production quality. When I play live I most of the time don't even look at the screen, the DAW is just there in the background to do it's thing. But I understand your point as enjoying the process really is key. :)

Laptop setups are slept on! Haha. I've been doing a lot of work over the last week running Ableton on a laptop and my Push 2. I was on a frantic hunt for a "standalone" production device for composing when away from the home studio. In theory, I didn't think I'd like it, but it's been amazing. I couldn't imagine going back to an MPC. The only thing I want is a Push 3 now haha.

Hey Remy, very true! I've written a lot of my songs just using my laptop on my legs although I have to say it's not the nicest working with it. And what you are describing is exactly the Push 3 haha - I will also get one very very soon!

@@MilesKvndra Since I'm a key/piano player I really prefer having some keys, but a laptop, Push 2, and Launchkey 37 is a lot haha. Push 3 and a Launchkey is the sweet spot. Love your stuff, man. I look forward to your videos when you get that Push 3.

@@remyvegamedia yeah can understand! That’s what I also use my Moog Sub 25 for, as I’ve it connected via usb I can use it as a midi keyboard. Only 25 keys but as I’m not a keyboard player this works for me. Yeah looking forward to getting it and then diving into it!

A few good points and great work on the video 👌😊 I prefer dawless workflow for production and gaining creativity. What always puts me away from a hybrid setup is, I don’t have found any solution to get rid of the annoying latency issues if I trigger and record my hardware synths from and into ableton. It’s always some milliseconds late. Drives me mad 😅 I do use ableton for multitrack recording and mixing/mastering tho 😊

This drove me mad for a while as well, until I started diving into the individual latency settings on the MIDI page. Might not solve everything for everyone, but this helped a lot of my sync issues.

Thanks Nogasayan and also to you for the addition, Andy! Can totally understand those points as I had quite some issues with latency too. Biggest problem was when I was using internal sequencers from the outboard gear and tried to sync that with sequences and loops running in Ableton. Every time I started a project I had a different latency time. But when I moved all sequencing to Ableton I could handle it however I needed to sacrifice the Elektron sequencer for that. But now everything works at least. :)

Hey Miles, tell me about the struggle with setting everything up... is it a M1 MacBook pro? I can see your electron devices running via usb, I was not able to keep them in sync for live performance, ended up connecting via midi & audio cables... how have you dealt with overbrigde sync issues?

Yes, this is an M1 MacBook Pro and I'm running the Digitone via Overbridge only over USB. It comes with latency but with the right amount of compensation it remains stable so I can work with it. I think the main reason for that is that I'm syncing the Digitone from Ableton and not use the internal sequencer. If I do, everything is completely out of sync.

I've been making electronic/ambient music with the Digitak for some time now without a DAW. But not professionally. My setup consists of Digitakt with Waldorf Streichfett, Roland S-1 and Evo4 Audio Interface. I would like to record my music, which DAW can you recommend? Preferably free.

That sounds like a nice setup you have going there! I’m an Ableton user and definitely can recommend it, however it’s not free. If you are an Apple user then GarageBand is a good free option.

I have a question: Did you encounter any midi sync issues while setting up the hybrid setup? I have been struggling with that lately, but now it seems like i found an (expensive) solution. The E-RM multiclock. I wonder if you can get around buying this device and still have OK sync though.

Yeah I've had quite a few issues with latency when setting everything up. Good thing is that Ableton has some good solutions in the software to compensate for latency that the outboard gear has. Just starting, so too early to answer that, I am trying DAW-less so that I can concentrate on each instrument and learn them, one at a time.

That’s certainly a good thing to do Romeo! I started with Ableton only and then went DAWless starting with the Digitone, which was great. But hybrid really adds more options now, however I understand it can be overwhelming when starting.

Thanks Miles. I, personally, started according to the dawless dogma! Fo some reason (probably influenced by too many RU-vid videos…) I used to consider computer and daw as evil 😅. Since I got my Push2 I moved to an hybrid approach and I agree 100% with your statements in this video. I have put together an FX rack that I put basically on every track (or group of tracks) with effects like HPF, saturation, SRR, beat repeat etc… and I mapped the 8 knobs to control these edges. Unfortunately this made me sell my Octatrack 😂😂😂 Thank you! Good stuff as usual!

I know exactly what you mean. There definitely is not a lot of love for the DAW in the synth space, especially when it comes to creative processes. I think every person’s creative process is different (and that’s great) so people should really use what works for them, no matter if it’s DAWless, hybrid or even working in the box completely. Do whatever works for you and I’m actually very happy when I find ways to bring my workflow to the next level and hybrid was one of those ways. Thanks for the great feedback and keep it up! 🙌🏻
