Today we update our custom LEGO city boatyard and give it a fresh new look! In our previous city layout, it was never 100% complete, but with the addition of MILS and our new layout, we have a much more opportunity to feature the boatyard. And it has never looked this good! Check out the new and improved LEGO boatyard in this first update!

The idea of submerging the boats it great, could also put some trans blue cheese wedges around the edge of the boats to symbolise very small waves around the edges of the boats, maybe even the same around the edges of the actuals docs too. is the underwater area going under the beach or the boat docs I wonder :-)

Looks great - for the ramp you could build a mils plate then just add ramps to it such as the ones used for train crossings and use hinge plates for the centre lane

1:30 Instead of using black plate, you can try yellow plate. It will become safety yellow line similar to train station.

I really like the tiling you did for the water plates. Makes it look and shine like real water. And I think that taking off tiles that are underneath boats is a good idea, but a lot of work.

Be quite good to follow the water from the waterfall from the temple mountains right through ninjago and the campground to then come out at the sea. Would be a nice link between city areas. Gives you something to play round with MILS detail wise too. 👍

The tiling makes an amazing difference to the water! So great. You’re idea to submerge the boats is brilliant! One idea - where the control room is, make a river that runs into the camp ground. Good for kayaking and fishing etc!

A coast guard or customs office would be fun. A bunch of superhero comics and shows have fights in and around shipping containers (Daredevil, FATWS, etc.) Recommend a row of shipping containers that is 3 containers high. Looks really good though.

Seeing as you want the boats to sit better in the water, maybe you build a frame that slides around the boats. That way the boats will be slightly submerge and not permanently fixed to the plates. Meaning you can move the boats into any order you like...

I think that a cool thing will be if you make a big stack of containers were the existing ones and that green wheel thingy is. And then maybe make one of those cool giant forklifts (like in the new train set). I thought, wow this dock is amazing, then you said “well time to tile it” and then it was very amazingly amazing!

Maybe add some post with chains connecting each one, that run down the sides of the docks. I'm guessing they use them for safety, so keep people from getting too close to the edge
@AlexKuhr

Wow, it makes a huge diffrence with the tiles on the water! For the transition to the campground area (road), you can modify your existing MILS plate in the dock area, to sort of have the road stuck into the plate, if it make sense. So remove some parts in the middle of the plate and make your own road, without the roadplates. I would suggest using 18 degree angled slopes, which isn't too big a "hill". So two 18 degree slopes, should do the trick to match up with the other "normal" MILS plate height.

The fact you had even considered adding depth to the water, you should have held off on tiling. You are going to absolutely dread digging that up in the future just to do it all over again. The dock area looks great though, the light reflecting off the tiles already gives the water a realistic shimmer.

Not sure if possible, but could you mils plate your boats? make them modular with the water plates so that they're modular? That said, I am really impressed with the boat yard. Too bad the Oilers haven't been converting their efforts as much as you have been. Here's to hoping 4 straight wins from now onwards..

I like the layout for the docks, and I like how it's all raised up like that. I do think that using the new road plates to add roads to the raised area makes sense. I have a couple of suggestions for you, too. 1: Around the classic cargo crane, if you wanted, you could modify the crane so that it's fully functional. I dunno how much it can do by default, but it'd be cool if it could pick up a container, then move it and place it on a truck. It should also be able to roll side to side on the dock. 2: On the docks, some tie offs for the boats would be needed, yeah. Also just piles and piles of nautical stuff. And birds. Crates, nets, floats, old buoys, cable spindles... Stuff that would have at one point been on a boat, and someone said "just put it on the dock, we'll get it later" and that was 15 years ago. 3: On the sides of the docks and the raised area: the bumper pads are a good idea, but I think it'd be a really neat and realistic approach if you could find a way to pad those edges with a lot of old tires. I'm sure you have plenty of extras; they always seem to be in no short supply, so having some of them along the edges might be really cool.

Hey Bricksie, I have a crazy idea for the water. I think you should add studs of white and light blue or turquoise on top 2x2 plates for depth and the submerging effect. In addition, I think you should add RGB lights under the studs with the right shade of blue or teal and brightness would make the ocean more lively since the sun creates a glistening effect on the water.
@tetlow89
@tetlow89 2 года назад
if you could incorporate the water all the way through somehow maybe make a river from the sea to the mountain, then the link between the dock yard and the road could be a bridge over the river instead of a ramp that would look quite cool.
@MrDE5MOND

Maybe you could take off parts of the bottom of the boats to get the submerged look. Then you could place them anywhere on the water. 👍🏾

The submerge idea is great..maybe to help is come up with a standard size for the "submerged" area so that ensures that if you decide to move the boats they can always fit or a few raised areas in the water so it just looks like something is going through on that certain side no matter the size.

Nice work on both the yard and the dock, and the water looks as realistic as it can get. I'd say if you plan on moving boats around, leave it the way it is as you said so it isn't so permanent and stuff gets stuck and so on. I don't know if you plan on adding more details to the shipping yard, but it looks great so far. 👍

Love to see the old 6542 back there… That set originally also came with a small pilot boat, which might be an idea to fill the quite empty section back there. The big ramp element from that set also exists in (old) dark gray… Maybe that's an idea to fill the gap to the normal roads?

I like what you're doing with the boatyard area Jordan, looking good Well, 5th June is my birthday 🥳 so I've been celebrating by building the UCS Landspeeder that I've had since release, finished bag 5 and loving the build, like you said mainly system building so more enjoyable that lots of technic! I agree with a comment below that it would be cool to somehow link the water from the mountain all the way through to the sea, this could include a culvert/drain so you don't have to visibly see the water all the way. Great video as usual and I'm looking forward to seeing the next evolution of your MILS plates - at least 4 bricks high?! 😂😀

Looks good! I saw a comment or two about adding motion next to the boats. That was my thought as well. Instead of sinking the boats add some water motion next to it? As even is a boat yard there would be water movement with other boats rocking against the docks or the wake from them leaving or coming.. if they still sat on top of what you have done but it would be less to remove if you decide to move the boats

Honestly if you’re using the modern scale for shipping containers and they’re in your harbour on the dry dock, you might want to sacrifice the 1991 launch and load seaport or modify it to handle containers bigger than the vintage 4x8x4 containers

Looks great so far, for the question... I think it would look better if the boats looked submerged a bit and some ripple effects maybe, of course it would be extra and like mentioned to move the boats around would be more work. Did the oilers win, the other day I saw a family come in to where I work all with oiler jerseys on, I thought "oh if Jordan makes a video I bet there will be a game".

I'd rather see more cranes and water and boats being unloaded than all that surface, no matter what you do it's going to be a gigantic gray tile display. Trains would really set it off too, they don't have to actually function with a full loop of track.
