Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). This cabin will function fully off-grid and will be only accessible by foot. Subscribe to follow our journey!
In this episode we scribe and notch our very last saddle notches. The two eave logs get finished and hewed flat. We construct 8 floor joists for the second floor and install them. We are now ready to start building the roof!
We are learning a lot as we are doing (as always), so don't hesitate if you have any questions, it will be a pleasure to share tips and tricks, if possible.

Thanks, James! We feel pretty confident with heights, we've been rock climbing for multiple years ahahah, but we are never far from a mistake indeed! Good to remember to be careful ;)

Getting close....curious on actual time-line of videos. Are you a couple weeks out? Love that you have some homegrown tomatoes 🍅. Are you growing anything else?
Год назад
Hi Jeff!! Since we got Covid, our videos have been pretty close to the real time. Only now have we gotten about two weeks in advance, thanks to good weather! And we’re growing some different things, but not as much as we want ;) we have some cucumber, peas, beans, zucchini, bell pepper, strawberries, raspberries and a bunch of flowers for the bees and butterflies
@BarefootJeff
@BarefootJeff Год назад
@ very cool on growing all those things. Maybe you could do a video on how you protect them from getting eaten by other animals and if you are going to can anything for the winter? Hopefully Covid wasn't too bad for you. It looks like you still made good progress 👏

Hi N & M. What a wonderful choice you have been able to make, and a great building job. I have been rewatching the evolution of things since the release of the newest video. Apologies if this has been asked and answered, but (out of curiosity) why did you not orient the cabin south-facing? Cheers!

Don’t cut all the extra off that you use to climb to top. Can keep that for that very reason and/or use that corner as an outdoor storage area or shower.

Wow..!👍👍 One can assume that you guys probably stand back each days end and stare at this stunning achievement with wonderful pride . Stellar work as since day one. ✨️ 🤙 So glad Maela didn't accidentally catch the draw knife blade into her knee when hewing top floor joist..eeeek Oh and btw..which laser level are you guys using and did the tripod stand for the laser level come w it or is it just a common tripod which allows attachment to it? .thanks so much again for sharing

The last couple weeks, the cabin has been changing so much, we have no choice but to stare at it in disbelief at the end of the day!! The laser we’re using is from Dewalt, here’s a link: www.dewalt.ca/product/dw087k/line-laser-horizontal-and-vertical?tid=578096 Thank you for watching :)

Thank you! No it's completely normal for wood to crack like that as it dries. It's called "checking"

seems as though the joist beams should bear on more than just those tenons. Haven't you structurally turned 6" - 7" diameter logs into 2x4s?
2 года назад
They're only 2x4s for bearing and shear forces at the ends of the log, which rarely govern a beam in pure bending. The bending stresses are greatest in the middle of the beam, where we still have the full cross section. We won't have all that much load on the 2nd floor anyways. We did some quick calcs for bending, shear, and bearing and all looks good!

Cutting & felling trees is crime as per law of the land in our Country. No body is supposed to enter the jungle for any unlawful activities like cutting green trees, killing animals and grabbing forest land etc. It all comes under unlawful activities of destroying government property. No one is supposed to carry tools, gun, equipments & machinery to cut trees & kill animals in the forest. I don' t understand how you people are continously cutting & burning trees & from environment point of you making the land Barren. And no body is stopping you people from such unlawful activity.

What are you going to do with the gaps between the logs? Chink them? Personally I've always felt that was an ugly look. If I were to build, I'd put insulation strips between each log then screw them down. Like Trustin Timber is doing on his cabin.
