Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). This cabin will function fully off-grid and will be only accessible by foot. Subscribe to follow our journey!
In this episode, we collect flat, smooth rocks from our stream and finish the stone floor around the stove and front door using mortar and a wood frame. We also paint and install our flue pipe from the stove to the chimney and light our first fire! Lastly, we install our last 2 windows on the front of the cabin on the 2nd floor.
We are learning a lot as we are doing (as always), so don't hesitate if you have any questions, it will be a pleasure to share tips and tricks, if possible.

Beautiful. Doing it the old fashioned way. The cost of the cabin was the price of the tools and hard work. Impressive. Truly.

The natural stone floor installation took time and dedication. In Dutch we would call this "monniken werk" - work done by monks on a monastery. The monks had the time and patience to tackle a project like that. They were not paid by the hour - just lodging, food and clothing for life! You did make a very beautiful floor. I noticed that you added a bit more water to to the mortar as you filled in the joints. You could also have used a bit more water for the mortar under the pieces and so make them stick better and make the job a bit easier. All for the next time! Have a feast day every time you finish another stage in the construction! Yes, I am enjoying this very much!

The stone entrance came out very nice, such a great idea to use the stones from your property. As you do all these projects on the build of your cabin I can’t help but think about how everything has to be brought to the location, even the water for the mortar needs to be carried in as well. You’re doing a wonderful job, and I feel privileged to be able too watch. Thank you.
Год назад
Thanks, Richard, as always! The water, luckily, can come from the beaver pond. The 3 mortar bags, each weighting 80 pounds had to be brought on our back tho. Definitely a good leg workout ahaha

Stone work looks good! Great job installing chimney and pipe 👍 One thing there is no flu in the pipe. Generally 10-16 inches above stove. It is a flat piece of metal that turns up and down on a long screw. The damper adjusts how much smoke goes up the chimney. At night you get fire roaring and turn it down with damper so doesn’t draw as much air and fire lasts longer…..

You may want to consider installing a damper in the stove pipe about two feet or so above the stove to be able to control the fire in the stove. That would allow you to burn the wood more efficiently while controlling the temperature in your dwelling.

Getting all of the windows in place & the insulation put inside is a huge deal! Simple things like the spray-painted stovepipe lends to the rustic touch of the cabin. The stone entrance is gorgeous! Congrats on your first fire in the stove! It's commendable that you used elements from off your land to incorporate into your home. Everything looks perfect & is functional. Flooring, ceiling, electric & maybe plumbing & a few other tasks will bring you to the point of being 'dried in'. In a while you will be living in your hand-built home. Looking forward to the finish.

You always do such a great job. The attention to detail using hand tools whenever feasible is so admirable. How cool to use river rocks from your own stream to lay that floor. And they’ll help hold the heat a bit too? I have friend who did their bedroom wall from river rocks and shake from their property, it was stunning. You two are great❤ Ottawa fan!

insert for fireplace, with the air intake at the bottom of the door, I added a cast iron plate, U-shaped (old cheap BBQ), which brings the air to the bottom of the fieplace: the glass remains almost clean, it heats up more, produces less ash...

Good idea using the stone. Think about going up the two walls next to the stove with stone also. Both floor and wall stone will help keep more heat energy in the cabin..

Wow 😊 !! I am so impressed every week and then the next video you put out seems to beat the one I just got done watching. It’s so hard to even explain how impressed I am and the time to find all the flat stone in the creek and the attention to detail like apologizing because you had to use an electric drill for a couple screws !! It’s like I’m dreaming and I’m going to wake up and say oh my you would not believe the dream I had it was so amazing. It’s like a fairytale and you two just keep getting better each week !! I think this love story needs to be a documentary on Netflix or somewhere like that. I’m going to close and say thank you thank you thank you for showing that sometimes dreams still do come true….. God bless you two and again thank you for being who you are and not trying to be someone you are not !!❤☺️😇🙏🙏✌🏼

it is possible to screw trough steel with hand tool at slow speed, you just have to push hard, and dont need to turn fast. Push as hard until you see small chip appear. I have a fild repair kit with a 1/4 inch drill bit on a screwdriver that go trough steel . Happy to see you find jewels from the river .
