Building a maggot farm has been on my mind for a few weeks now but not being an overly practical person I wasn't sure how to build a maggot farm, until one of our subscribers dropped us an email with the suggestion which happens to be on a channel that Pie and I subscribe to ... LifeinThailand - / @lifeinthailand
So today we built our first maggot farm and it took us about 15 minutes. Yes it's so simple and yet this will help keep the cost of feeding the fish down if we can produce enough maggot ... we might build more maggot farms if needed.
We've got a huge amount to do at the farm today as lots is going on which you'll discover when watching :)

Graham, glad to help mate. We will make a couple on our farm as well to feed the chickens, just too easy and free feed source. Pie put it together in no time, tomorrow you should have a bucket load. Thanks, Brian

Graham if I may make a suggestion, when you guys are burning all that stuff and making a big fire, why don't you get a metal container and fill it up with 4" pieces of fire wood and put it in the middle of the fire with a couple of small hole abour3/16" and when the fire dies down the next day you have a bunch of good home made charcoal for free. look it up on the net, there is hundred's of examples. good luck and all the best.

Thanks Charles, I'll do a little research on RU-vid to see what I can come up with.

Hi Graham. Only one thing regarding the maggot farm. Is it to be under cover all the time? With the holes in the top, it will allow large amounts of rain in,and may flood the base bin. If the holes were on the side of the black bin, about an inch down from the top, and a silicone seal between the black and green bins, it could be stand alone and weather tight.You can use duct tape to seal the holes in the top. Just an observation mate. Love to all.

I don't know how much rain you get there ? ..but would the holes be better at the sides so the rain don't get in as easy as if holes at the top ?

If there is anything you wonder about a small farm or homestead, just look up Life In Thailand. You will find a solution for a lot of things in his videos. Why do you burn everything you cut down? Make woodchips and mulch of it. It is biologig matter that will help the soil being better. The old Bananatrees you cut down must be chopped in to some pieces and used as mulch on another tree. That build soil and fertility.

Grow worms. Easier and less messy than maggots and they only eat plant waste. You produce worms and fertilizer. Also grow grass carp which just eat grass and grow fast.

Just got back from the Fishing Tackle shop with a pint of maggots for tomorrows fishing trip and there you are, producing your own! I tell you what though Graham, it will stink like Hell in that heat!The Farm is looking really neat and tidy! You could start a "Farm Stay" business for City Folk to experience Rural Living!! You'll be competing with Gordon soon when the cow(s) arrive!! Take care!
@gbriar
@gbriar 7 лет назад
Yeah a bit smelly but they are in the old pigsty so it should be ok; we'll give it a go and see if it produces enough. Funny you should mention 'Farm Stay' as we have some news day :)

I was thinking about the security, Some people here use PIR's that are on a battery lasts about a month, Remotlry linked to a Huge Spot Light that goes in a 360. Might be worth a look at. Very good deterrent. Ill try and find out a bit more info

I remember having grasshoppers or crickets, or some insect at a bar in Thailand a few years back, they were pretty good, tasted like peanut butter I thought. I was pretty drunk at the time....Sure was hungry, remember eating a large portion of the plate that was being offered around....I'm like you couldn't eat the bugs, especially cockroaches....
@gbriar

the farm as you English say , look's spot on, and I still say farming is the hardest job going, so keep going strong , and thanks for to days video Graham. I keep forgetting to ask why the old pond is so murky? I heard on the grape vine Gordon was walking around top less today!!!!!!!

I know a old farmer who has a maggot basket for his fish pond. He used a metal basket and he just let it hang over his pond. he grew some large catfish. I'll look into making something like this for my farm also. Ty

Cheers mate. Had a couple of people suggest the same; might have to give it a go :)

Graham Briar the basket is better for bigger meat pieces and animals you pick up on the side of the road or guts from an animal you processed stuff like that. But I like your trash can ideas for smaller stuff. thanks again for sharing
